Cut Brandon Moss already!

This is ridiculous! Another hitless game to bring his average to an awesome .037 for the spring. Sweet showing. It's time for the front office to admit that the return for Jason Bay failed. We need to cut our losses and move on. There's no way he's even good enough to be a bench player. Is there any reason to keep him around? Anything else is better than Moss. It's embarrassing and it's awful.

There are 2 hitters with at least 20 ABs who have been worse than Moss this spring.

The first is Nolan Reimold of the Orioles. He started 94 games last year and actually had a decent enough season. He’s 0-21 with 1 walk for a .000/.045/.000 line. Somewhat surprisingly he’s only struck out 4 times.

The other is Nate McLouth. He has one hit in 35 ABs. 3 walks, 14 strikeouts. .029/.103/.057

Moss’s line is 1-27, 3 walks 8 strikeouts. .037.133/.037

Today...

I’d rather have Charlie Morton than Nate McLouth. But we all know that could change by May 1st.

The Braves are considering moving Nate to 8th in the order and/or even platooning with the Melkman. Ouch.

Melky?

Damn, that’s grim.

by Vlad on Mar 25, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

More ugly Melky-related news for us this time: He’s McCutchen’s 10th most comparable player on PECOTA, and Tabata’s 9th.

by Adam Reynolds on Mar 25, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Fortunately, with Nate Silver gone...

…I don’t trust PECOTA anymore, so I’m free to ignore that.

Reminds me of the one about Paul Waner hitting.

Paul never let too many bottles slip past him, and IIRC the joke when he was in a slump was that he wasn’t drinking enough, because he only saw the pitcher throwing two balls instead of three, and he didn’t know which one to target when taking his cut.

There are a lot of good "drunk Paul Waner" stories.

He’s reported to have carried around a fountain pen filled with whiskey, for example, just in case of emergencies. Link.

Tremendous!

Its to early to tell

on the Bay trade return, but yes Brandon Moss isnt helping the Pirates case. I say keep him, he is so big I just feel like he is going to eventally tap that power. I would hate to see that happen on another team.

What's the hurry?

No need to cut anyone before we have to. You never know when an OF or two might get hurt.

by maguro on Mar 21, 2010 10:54 AM EDT reply actions

we have Raynor, the other jones, Pearce, & young. i think their covered for outfielders try to trade Moss who knows you may get something out of him

by crazy nick on Mar 21, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

If he's the worst thing in the world

how are we going to get anything for him? Besides, Jones, Pearce, Young are average (at best) fielders, while Moss is above average. I agree: no reason to cut him until the final cuts if you are going to do it.

by poorboywilly on Mar 21, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

A men

I couldn’t agree more. He’s done nothing to warrant all the playing time he’s been given already.

by Brakeman8 on Mar 21, 2010 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

Moss said that he didn’t drive the ball with authority last year because he couldn’t lift weights due to the nagging effects of his injury.

Presumably Moss could lift this off-season, though. Spring training is such a small sample size, but he really needed to show something at this time.

26 year old with power and hits line drives and plays great D

Isn’t this the type of player that the Pirates should be looking to sign, let alone keep when they have one. Offense has been lacking on this team for years. If I were management, I would certainly give Moss every chance I could because this team is going no where this year, so there really is nothing to lose to determine if he is what we bought into when he was acquired in the Bay trade. Put him on the team and let the pressure to make the roster fade, and Moss will get his hits. Will he do better than last year, who knows, but I am willing to test his potential one more year and who knows, he could break out big.

I can’t tell if you’re serious or being sarcastic. Lord, I hope the latter. He’s garbage.

by mspirate on Mar 22, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder...

what the chances of sneaking him through waivers would be if he keeps up his pace the rest of spring training. I’d hate to see Moss released because he is still young. I just don’t think he will be given the opportunity on the ML squad.

At best....

…Brandon Moss is R.J. Reynolds, but at this point he’s not even Cecil Espy. I’d not worry about sending him packing at all. Jose Tabata is better. John Raynor is better. Heck, even Delwyn Young appears to be better. It’s obvious that McCutchen, Jones and Milledge are better. We signed Ryan Church for OF depth. That’s 7 OFs already who I would rather have than Moss. How many more do we need?

by Brakeman8 on Mar 22, 2010 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

I'm just saying...

It would be nice to be able to have him at Indy just in case. It’d be a shame to see him get cut then go to another club and turn his career around.

I’d be OK with him playing at AAA.

by Brakeman8 on Mar 22, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

We might very well be able to sneak

Brandon Moss through on waivers and get him back to Indy and play every day.

The “depth is your friend” idea is an oft-repeated one on this site, and for good reason.

We don’t know about the production of guys like Cutch, Milledge and G. Jones over a 162-game season.

The injury bug could bite at anytime.

Church has had a bad back.

If we keep Raynor, will he be able to do anything useful?

D. Young can pinch-hit a bit, but I’d rather not see him in the OF very often.

Jose Tabata has still got a lot to prove in the minors before he deserves a shot at an everyday job in Pittsburgh.

Yeah, it’s looking increasingly likely that Moss can’t get the job done at the plate. But remember that he’s also a solid defense OF as a backup.

I still think he’s destined for duty in Japan, but I sure would like to see us get something else out of him at least this year while we’re sorting through some younger players.
