Who's our rival???

When i got my 2010 schedule i was planning out who i want to see & i noticed something.... the teams i want to see the pirates beat aren't in the N.L. Central. Washington, Philly & Cleveland we only play them 1 or 2 times a year. It's hard to hate a team that is at least a 3 hour drive away. teams like Washington or Philly it would be easy to sell a rivalry with in Pittsburgh. Who am i suppose-to hate Milwaukee? it's not like they even have any famious D-bags who live in Milwaukee (except Braun).

No clue...

I was thinking about this earlier actually. I would have to consider our Central rival to be Milwaukee. We do at least have some recent bad blood with them. Another down part of being bad for 17 years…you become so bad that you don’t develop rivalry’s with anyone because you are irrelevant.

Tough question. I’d go with the Reds, because of the playoff history.

The Reds

Just don’t incite any rage within the cockles of my heart whenever I think about them. I do hate the Cardinals, but that’s just kinda because they’re always good and I think La Russa is La Doucha…At least with the Brewers yeah there’s some level of animocity with Prince and what not after last year’s festivities…I would LOVE to beat Washington and get specially amped for those games considering the trash talking and roster-stealing maneuvers they’re done over there the past couple years…

The Pirates will someday develop Central rivalries

But they have to be a good club to get it done. It’s like with the Stillers and Browns now. The Brown have been so bad there’s hardly a rivalry left there now.

I’d have to think that at the moment the Nationals are the closest thing the Pirates have to a rival. There’s the Sean Burnett trash talk, the fans on both sides arguing about who got the better deal in that trade, each fanbase thinking their team is in better shape than the other with some verbal sparring going on.

It’s like a race this year to see who can be the least suckiest.

i just hate the Nats because of my deep hatred of the Crapitals & Ovechkin.

That’s the best reason I’ve heard yet.

Brewers

Not sure if I’d consider them our rivals, but I hate everything about the Brewers. From their stupid untucking the shirt celebration to their arrogant players. Every time we play them I watch hoping our pitcher hits Fielder in his Mount Rushmore of a stomach…

Id have to say

the Brewers, it just seems i get a little bit more mad when we lose to them compared to any other NL Central team. Then i would have to say the Cubs, they are just so stuck up in believing they are the shit yet they havent won a title in like 100 years so id say Brew Crew and Cubs.

I thas to be the Reds

just the proximity, the history of both teams and it has a great marketing title for it. The River City Rivalary

Yet another reason...

to go back to two divisions, and take the four best records for the playoffs. The Brewers are annyoing, just because of Braun and Portly Prince. But if it was two divisions, I’d think the Phils would be a great target because of the rivalry between the two cities and the Reds because of the playoff history.

I dislike the Brewers immensely. Braun and Fielder are so good, yet such d-bags.

by Suffering Buc on Mar 7, 2010 6:01 PM EST reply actions

We don't have one.

None of the geographical candidates work particularly well. Philly is in another division, and Cleveland and Cincy are official rivals for the purposes of interleague play.

lets just pick a team in the central then

I choose the Astros for no real reason other than I hate Minute Maid Field

Yeah

We have to look beyond geography.

Here in Dallas, I have a different understanding of rivalries. Spurs are good in basketball with proximity and competition level. But the Rangers have the Angels, A’s and Mariners in the same division. None of those are close. In the NFL the Cowboys’ rivals are the Eagles, Redskins and Giants. Again, it’s more due to competition level than geography. The Yankees are a rival for the Rangers because they’ve knocked them out of the playoffs 3 times. But the Yanks don’t know that since the Rangers were just a fly buzzing around for a minute before they swatted them away.

The Pirates have to get good before they have a real rival.

yea but in hockey i’m 2 hrs from Washington & the caps & 3 hrs from the flyers baseball should redo the divisions & leagues to more like hockey Eastern Conference & Western Conference

Clippers.

I’m kidding.

I have to say the Brewers

Bad blood on the field, the Pirates have to play them a lot every season.

Rival?

I think it is the Iron Pigs from Lehigh Valley – they are a really good Triple AAA team this year and could give the Bucs a run for their money!
