Should Cedeno be Nervous?
Ok, it's early March, but should Cedeno be looking over his shoulder? Crosby is having a very nice day thus far, and he is a former ROY. It seems to me like they are both pretty similar at the plate; both have some pop, but neither hits for much average. Crosby has a slightly higher fielding percentage, though I have no idea who has more range. Of course this could all be moot if Crosby gets hurt. Since winning ROY in 2004, it looks like he has only stayed healthy for one whole season.

Crosby's credentials
Since most of his career after 2004 has been a big disappointment, I don’t think him being a former ROY will have any impact on who wins the starting shortstop position. Although I do believe that if Cedeno really struggles and Crosby has more games like this the Pirates will take a serious look at him as the starter.
**According to many reports though Crosby’s HR today was very much wind aided and would have been a flyout in Pittsburgh, so don’t get too excited yet.
Crosby’s homer today was not wind-aided. I was there, and the wind was blowing sharply in from left. Anyway, it was a very sharp line drive, so even if it hadn’t left PNC, it probably would not have been caught for an out. I don’t know why Dejan said that.
Not that one homerun or one good game should be the basis for any roster/PT decisions either way.
Eh, too early to lean either way...
I think coming into the spring Cedeno has the advantage for the starting job over Crosby, because of his production at the end of last year. I would also give the edge defensively to Cedeno. I know their fiedling % are very close; I believe Crosbys career fielding % is actually higher, but in just games that I’ve seen, Cedeno seems to have more range, and makes more “web gem” plays. Neither of them hit much for average, or power, but I’d give the edge in batting to Crosby. I don’t think it really matters either way who we go with, but I also don’t think either are a long term solution in this organization…
I really like what management has done with the bench this year. Crosby & Church are both starter potential in the event that someone struggles. We are covered at multiple positions by these two in the event that the likes of Clement and Cedeno (LaRoche, Milledge, and Jones) don’t turn into what we hope for. No sense in naming either as a “starter” until after we get a good look at these younger guys. I think they keep those two plus DY (good pinch hitter), Vasquez (will do), Raynor (keeping 4 starting pitchers initially), plus a catcher (sounds like Kratz may be the one so JJ gets full time duty at AAA). Waiver time for Moss & Pierce.
Pearce?
Does’nt Pearce have another option year? we can send him back down to AAA to play 1st base, or RF if he does’nt make the club out of spring training?
It does look like Moss’ days in Pittsburgh are numbered…maybe Boston claims Moss through waivers? He played better in his couple months there than he ever did here…

Almost 100% Positive...
That Pearce is out of options
i d be v surprised
if that is true… i think he has a year left, although I can’t find a source right now!
Yes, Pearce has an option left. He was a Sept. call-up in ‘07, so that doesn’t count as an option year.
Thanks for clearing that up.
That is good news
Also, could Taschner be that 2nd lefty (assuming Lopez is in) for the bullpen?
Dotel
Donnelly
Hanrahan (DL?)
Meek
Lopez (LH)
Taschner (LH)
Carrasco
Another thing to keep in mind...
…Crosby’s career stats vs. NL (395 PA): 9 hr 43 rbi 8 sb .270 avg and .762 OPS.
I think we’d all take that line if he were able to replicate it for the 2010 season. I realize this may not be the best indicator of the success he’ll have this year, but it does give reason for at least optimism.
I just hope we can get acceptable SS play
out of Cedeno, Crosby and probably Diaz over the 162 games so that our starting staff can continue to develop without having to worry about even the routine plays up the middle.
I’m pretty confident that we have the mix of players for 3B, 2B, and 1B to get what we need for acceptable production in the field and at the plate.

Probably not Diaz given how he’s played the past year. Someone like Friday would be next in line, as far as I can tell.
