Pirates at Yankees

Here we go at George Steinbrenner field again.  With as dead as the bats went yesterday (Alvarez, Tábata and Friday notwithstanding), I wonder if we can get anything going against Sabathia?

Pirates Lineup

  1. Andrew McCutchen CF
  2. Ronny Cedeño SS
  3. Lastings Milledge LF
  4. Garrett Jones RF
  5. Andy LaRoche 3B
  6. Jeff Clement 1B
  7. Bobby Crosby DH
  8. Delwyn Young 2B
  9. Jason Jaramillo C

Pitching:  Charlie Morton, Brian Burres, D.J. Carrasco, Donnie Veal, Bryan Morris

Yankees Lineup

  1. Derek Jeter SS
  2. Nick Johnson DH
  3. Jorge Posada C
  4. Alex Rodríguez 3B
  5. Curtis Granderson CF
  6. Nick Swisher RF
  7. Randy Winn LF
  8. Juan Miranda 1B
  9. Kevin Russo 2B

Pitching:  C.C. Sabathia, Boone Logan, Dustin Moseley, Héctor Noesi, Royce Ring, Romulo Sánchez

It will be good to get more looks (listens) at Morton, Morris and Veal.  I also want to see how Clement continues to fare at first base, and you gotta love the Cutch!  Does anyone know what the deal is with Canó?  Is he injured or have we just happened to play the Yankees when he hasn't played?

sweet

just discovered this one is televised!

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Dang

Only have radio.

RIght now I’m actually listening to Strasburg pitch for the first time. More for curiosity’s sake than anything I suppose. He retired the side in the first.

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Cutch

watches a strike, ball, and then laces a drive up the middle for a single.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:07 PM EST reply actions

How much did you have to pay for mlb.tv. I’d like to get it but don’t really think it would be worth it for me.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

I got the premium package for 109

which is 10 bucks off, because I’m a previous subscriber. It’s worth it to me because otherwise I would see zero Pirates games a year because I live in the west.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Not bad

would be worth that living out of the area

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

it's 99

for the regular package, and so long as your internet connection can support it the premium is as good as 720 HD, so I figure I might as well pay 10 more for it.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Cedeno with a double to the left field wall. Cutch holds at third. Nobody out.

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Cedeño apparently wanted to swing

swung at one ball and almost another, but takes 1-2 pitch down the left field line. 2nd and third for Milledge.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Milledge single, Cutch scores, Cedeno on third, Milledge to second on an overthrow.

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Milledge

pokes a nice ball through the right side, scores Cutch and advances to second when Swisher skies the throw over cutoff man

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Jones with a 3 run home run.

Love getting 4 runs off CC/

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

lmao

inside fastball was just crushed. C.C. looking pretty frustrated.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

wait

not sure whats going on here…

mlb gameday says brandon jones, dejan says garrett, so I m inclined to go with garrett

by BurgherKing on Mar 9, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

What an awesome start.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

Is that two hits for Jones, and two HRs with runners on? Maybe he’ll stop hitting only solo shots this year…

by smokedpretzels on Mar 9, 2010 1:17 PM EST reply actions

law of averages I guess

he’s bound to him ’em with runners on sometime

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

LaRoche

gunning for CC: broken bat splinter almost hits Sabathia, one out. Clement pops up first pitch, two outs.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

That’s enough reporting from me apparently, I spaced out on the last two batters, and when Crosby hit a double, I thought he was batting right after Jones.

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:19 PM EST reply actions

Delwyn

was trying to pull one. He pulled a nice ball well foul and then rolled over a grounder to third.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:20 PM EST reply actions

CC's thinking ...

“Man I thought we were playin the Pirates today”

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions

92 mph fastball

Jeter grounds out to third. Morton also tossed a curve for a ball; that’s a sweet looking pitch.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:24 PM EST reply actions

huh

nice changeup from Morton, but Johnson just gets it over the RF fence for a homer, 4-1 Pirates

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

Delwyn

lumbers out for a ball to his right, but it gets by him. Posada on first, 1 out.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Does that make him part of a new Lumber Company? :)

by Schide on Mar 9, 2010 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

seems to me DY doesn’t really have what it takes to handle 2nd base

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

I could be wrong. I guess time will tell

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Morton

walks A-Rod. Trying to nibble it looks like (who can blame him though, it’s A-Rod).

The Yankees’ announcers are claiming that Morton is fighting to “open eyes” and make the roster.

Nice inside two seamer rings up Granderson looking.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Man

I was so annoyed listening to the Yanks broadcast crew last Wednesday.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

They insinuated that the Buc’s got raked over the coals on the Nady/Marte deal

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

right.

But yeah, they are really annoying. “The Yankees totally deserve to win the next 52 championships in a row. The universe owes it to us. Every team besides us is terrible.”

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

to be clear

I’m laughing at the idea that WE are the ones that got fleeced by that trade. When I reread it that’s not entirely clear.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Swisher

hits a ball to right, McCutchen misplays the hop but with no ill consequence. Posada scores, 4-2 Pirates.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions

McCutchen

nice patient at bat to work it full, grounds to Jeter who barely gets the throw in time.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:41 PM EST reply actions

the Yankees' announcers:

“The Pirates are trying to get back on track, but the fans are having to learn a whole new group of faces and stars.” What, like the Yankees don’t cycle through free agents like dirty socks?

Cedeño strikes out, going to bottom of the 2nd.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:42 PM EST reply actions

Id like to

have gotten Nick Swisher he would be ideal at pnc.

by bucsreport on Mar 9, 2010 1:44 PM EST reply actions

Russo

K’s on a 94 mph high fastball. Morton looks like he settled down quite a bit.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

Morton goes 1-2 on Jeter

then fields his chopper, end of the second 4-2 Pirates.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Nice work keeping Jeter off balance with slider and fastballs.

by Traco Bucco on Mar 9, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Good job by Morton

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Was Clement’s catch a tough one or wasit right at him?

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:52 PM EST reply actions

Milledge strikes out

Garret Jones takes 2-1 pitch to LF and Winn can’t catch it. Jones gets to second.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

LaRoche

knocks one up the middle, Granderson throw is not great, but the catcher doesn’t catch it either so Jones scores. Posada pulled a Paulino.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Clement draws a walk

1st and second, one out…we chase Sabathia out. Good job Bucs!

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Clement seems to have a lot of patience at the plate. Good sign for things to come.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 1:59 PM EST reply actions

Moseley

Ks Crosby. Tough pitch, looked a little outside to me.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:03 PM EST reply actions

Young

drives one at Granderson, three out, Pirates 5-2.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:03 PM EST reply actions

Johnson

has Morton’s number apparently. Cranks a fastball pretty far into the RF stands. Pitch was supposed to be in, it just drifted over the middle of the plate.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions

who all has pitched for the buccos to day other than morton

by WVPiratesfan on Mar 9, 2010 2:08 PM EST reply actions

Morton

walks Posada on five pitches. He looks a little shaken up, having a lot of trouble locating.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:08 PM EST reply actions

Nice recovery against A-Rod

first pitch changeup on the outside corner. 1-2 pitch hit right at Delwyn, who somehow manages to nearly muck up the double play, but they get it. Two down.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:10 PM EST reply actions

Granderson

grounds to Cedeño, who does his best to commit a throwing error, but Clement makes a real nice pick on the ball. He sure looks pretty smooth over there so far for not being too experienced at first. End of the third, 5-3 Bucs.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Nice confidence builder for charlie to work his way outta the inning.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

Jaramillo

bounces a single up the middle.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

McCutchen chops to third

fielder’s choice gets Jaramillo but no chance on McCutchen.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Cedeño

slaps a single into the gap, but cut off. Not sure why Cutch froze on the line drive, but it didn’t really make any difference. 1st and third, here comes Milledge.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Love the YES annnouncers...

and how they say Cutch’s instincts are off…based on one play…in Spring Training!

Idiots.

by SpacePirate on Mar 9, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

yeah that's good stuff

Like I said, not sure why he froze, but just watch his at bats. He has such great pitch recognition and patience. No way his “instincts” are off.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

lots of choppers

Milledge skies a chop to score Cutch and stay out of the DP. Ronnie moves to second.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:19 PM EST reply actions

Miranda out somehow

and then Russo walks. Going 2-0 on Jeter now, he can’t hit the plate.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

Yes

Yes announcers actually seem to be making a decent point for once in saying that Burres is just refusing to throw it over the plate. It’s like he’s scared of getting hit.

by CoryR on Mar 9, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

I think he is just afraid to challenge righties. He’s much more aggressive against lefties.

by Blyleven Curve Ball on Mar 9, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Jeter bounces to LaRoche

throws it strong to first. One run scores. Two outs.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:34 PM EST reply actions

curveball way up in the zone

Weber crushes a double to the LF fence. Game tied. Thanks VV 2.0.

Burres

don’t know why he’s still in there. Gotta get a full inning I guess.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

He’s definitely not out there trying to earn a spot in the pen

by CoryR on Mar 9, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

Posada

laces a single to Milledge (off 3-2 count at that). 7-6 Yankees. Finally pulling him.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:38 PM EST reply actions

This is why spring training records are pretty much meaningless. The Bucs are having a decent game against the Yanks. And then a guy who most likely will not be on the big team outta spring comes in and throws a wrench in the gears.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 2:39 PM EST reply actions

Amazing the opportunities being left-handed will get you.

by WTM on Mar 9, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Shoulda thrown wrenches at the Yankee batters. Might’ve gotten better results.

by curvefan on Mar 9, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

A-Rod

way behind on a Uviedo fastball. That is, after he almost skies the first fastball over Jaramillo.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

I would have thought the bull mascot was standing back there on that pitch.

by Blyleven Curve Ball on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Uviedo

Anyone know about how hard Uviedo throws? He seems to be wingin it. I wish they had radar guns at ST games…

by CoryR on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

they did earlier

but for some reason the little YES scoreboard isn’t showing anymore.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

As a reliever he sat around 94. When he was starting last year it was more like 90-92.

by WTM on Mar 9, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Clement picks up

a dribbling grounder to get Rodríguez.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Clement grounds out to third on the second pitch

I guess the ump wants to get out of here now. Strikezone looks huge. At least for their pitchers.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions

We need to pull Clement so I don’t have to listen to these damn announces say cleMENT anymory…

by WTM on Mar 9, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

nice curve

or maybe slider to strikeout Winn

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Save the triple, his pitches looked pretty sharp.

by Blyleven Curve Ball on Mar 9, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

broken bat grounder to first

and we manage another scoreless inning. Yankees 7-6, end of the fifth.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:55 PM EST reply actions

Crosby

skies out to second. Looks like there is Raynor in right, Tábata in center, and probably more. The announcers claim they will be “documenting the subs” but they are lying again.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 2:58 PM EST reply actions

mlb box score

says the same, but they’ve already messed up once today!

by BurgherKing on Mar 9, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Delwyn Young

flyout left field. Worked the count full nicely, but couldn’t catch up with fastball (which was clocking 96-98)

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:00 PM EST reply actions

it's Romulo

I don’t remember him ever throwing that hard for us.

He K’s Jaramillo in the dirt, check swing did not check.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

He supposedly gained some velo last year.

And they were using him as a starter, too.

by Vlad on Mar 9, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Carrasco’s gonna get drunk if he downs a Corona every strike he throws. (Sorry…I couldn’t resist. Unfortunately…work got in the way of commenting in real time).

by Thunder on Mar 9, 2010 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

I'm glad you brought it up

I almost made a joke there but instead just reported what happened

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

Carrasco

sidearms a slider to K Nuñez.

These YES tools are claiming Cutch only has four tools. I guess they don’t like his arm?

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:09 PM EST reply actions

Could also mean power.

If you treat it as over-the-fence power.

by Vlad on Mar 9, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Díaz

finally gets the idea and takes a few from Romulo, takes a walk and chaces him out. Maybe it’s the glasses? He’s lost them.

by CoryR on Mar 9, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions

well

I thought Giménez based on the staredown, but I didn’t see his mouth move, so I guess Pearce.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

nice inning Veal

popup, flyout, foul out to catcher. Giménez got run into by Pearce but he still caught the ball, then gave quite the staredown to Pearce.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Why watch the game only once...

…when the YES network replays (parts of) even meaningless ST games? This was a very good inning f/Veal – 6 pitches, all well-located. Admittedly against some mere ortal batters, but still…

by Trogluddite on Mar 9, 2010 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

Raynor

beats out slow roller to second. Alvarez at the plate.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

Pedro

looks silly on a breaking ball in the dirt. One down.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Gorecki

takes a circuitous at best route on a Crosby drive. Would’ve been a tough play even if he ran it down well. Game is tied, 2nd and third for Bernier.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions

grounder to third

High throw gets Pearce in safe. 8-7 Pirates lead. 1st and third for Giménez.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Bernier steals second easily

Giménez lines sharply to second. Pitching change.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

Tábata

real nice AB, got down 0-2 but fouled off a bunch of pitches and laid of a couple outside breaking pitches. However, the result is a lazy fly ball to center.

These idiot announcers are talking about Tábata like he’s Steve Pearce. “Just hasn’t become what everyone thought he could be yet. Just gotta keep going out and trying to prove he is that guy.” DUDE, HE’S 21. He’s played well in the minors. I’m not worried at ALL about Tábata yet. Actually quite excited.

by poorboywilly on Mar 9, 2010 3:50 PM EST reply actions

Last time they were on MLB Network they talked about how people are excited for Jesus Montero, but Tabata’s a good example of why you shouldn’t be looking forward to these prospects.
