Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

No, this is not an April Fool's joke. Virgil has been sent to the Rays for a PTBNL. I can't believe the Pirates got anything at all for him.

UPDATE by Charlie: This is the first trade in recent memory about which I have practically nothing to say. The PTBNL won't be anyone of consequence, and the Pirates really don't need the sort of "depth" Vasquez provides.

Dejan had mentioned this...

…as a possibility on his Twitter yesterday.

I wish VV well, but I certainly won’t miss having him around.

Darnit...

I got really excited at first because I thought you meant Ramon…but i guess getting rid of VV helps too

Good for the Pirates.

I first saw this on my FB profile and clicked the link to the mlb.com story. The first comment there said:

so much for all that “no more trades, we’re going to develop what we have” talk.

At that point, I shot myself in the head and threw my laptop out the window…

Really mind-boggling

My only sadness about this trade is that he was already off the 40-man, which means that it couldn’t possibly affect the team at all.

Does anyone thing that Karstens should go back to starting (with a presumptive eye towards availability as a long man out of the pen)?

by JRoth95 on Apr 2, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That seems like it would be a good idea. I also saw that they had Powell throw 5 innings in a AAA game the other day, so it looks like they might be stretching him out as well.

Karstens.....

Guessing he’ll never start another game in the majors and if things go even reasonably well in the organization he won’t pitch for the Pirates again. He just isn’t good enough, plain and simple. Good guy, blah, blah, blah…..No upside and lacking any dominant pitch.

Pretty impressive to do it in that order

interesting

i wonder what people think of elliott johnson, who methinks is the most likely player coming back in this trade… middle infielder, decent bat 770ish OPS, you’d want a better eye at the plate, but likely better than anything in the organization that can fill in the big leagues at 2B…

by BurgherKing on Apr 2, 2010 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

Don't think I'd place him above D'Arnaud.

Seems like organizational filler to me, though we could probably use even a warm body for 2B at AAA. ZiPS projects him for 2010 at .230/.281/.351.

Where did you see him mentioned as a possible PTBNL?

by Vlad on Apr 2, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

not above D'Arnaud

which is why I was specifying someone who can fill in in the big leagues (this year, if necessary). I was looking at the discussion on DRaysBay over Elliott Johnson being waived- mere speculation, of course, but it makes sense. He was recently waived, and it could be that they are waiting to see if he clears waivers so he could be sent to AAA.

I thought

Walker was a warm body?

Damn.

Wrong Vasquez / Vazquez…

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Apr 2, 2010 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, its not his fault

that he’s the best this team had to offer as 5th starter. the PG Pirates blog characterized this as a courtesy trade to let Virgil try to develop somewhere else. Hopefully, that type of professional courtesy igets us some good karma in the future.

VV is a class act

One of the nicest guys I’ve met and I believe he will get a better opportunity at TB and more power to him.
