Throwing Gasoline on the Fire

Chris Jakubauskas should come up today to join the Pirates' bullpen. Kevin Hart will start Saturday. Brad Lincoln is available, but the Pirates want him to work on his secondary pitches--because, apparently, the Bucs demand perfection of their starting pitchers.

The Pirates want Lincoln to work on his secondary pitches like the Reds want Chapman to slow his delivery from the stretch … more arbitration clock style.

Well, yes and no.

I’m sure that they’d like to keep an extra year of service time if they can. But at the same time, he coudl genuinely use some work in that area.

Exactly.

We can call up guys like Burres, D. Cutch and Jakubaskus because while they might not be polished, they’re probably as good as they’re gonna get. Lincoln has actual potential.

I appreciate the snark

But I’m not convinced there’s any point in rushing Lincoln up. Given the state of the 3rd-5th spots, it seems like it would be permanent, and I don’t think the guy’s done anything yet (in ST or AAA) to prove that he’s ready. Put him in a position to succeed, not to struggle and perhaps fail.

The guy who couldn’t beat out No Relation?

Yeah.

Not sure I wouldn’t rather see Jakubauskas get that start instead. Not that either one is a great option.

I though Jaku couldn’t start because he ended up getting used in long relief yesterday, or something. I’m pretty sure that, as of Wednesday, Jaku was still on the list for possibly starting Saturday, but something changed his status.

That said, I’m not too freaked out by Hart. His control numbers have been not-awful in AAA, suggesting that at least he won’t be heaving it over the backstop Saturday,

Typing that just made me a lot more depressed.

I still think...

…we ought to give Seth McClung a call.

by Vlad on Apr 23, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

No...

that was Karstens. Jaku was scheduled to start last night…but Karstens pitched instead…because Indy had been told Jaku was needed for at least long relief tonight.

Lincoln has gotten absolutely bombed by lefties since getting to AAA. I really don’t think he’d do much better with a major league lineup than what we’ve seen so far from the starters.

Seriously, guys

If, God help us, the Ohlie injury should turn into a season-long problem (and who knows?), what do we do? We can’t seriously continue to punt three of every five games (no pitching) and half the rest (no offense, no matter how well Duke/Maholm pitch), can we? I mean, I’ve tried to turn “Pedro’s still available” into a running joke, but really, at some point we have to consider signing guys off the scrap heap who can at least go five innings or we’ll have no arms left in the pen by the end of May either.

I can see this deteriorating into a historically bad season too easily.

i thought i read that Ohlie's

injury was healing up and he hasn’t had set-backs. I get your point though.

Except for that setback

that turned it from 1 start to 2, then the other from 2 to a DL trip. Yup, no set backs at all…

Nickname

I watched Bull Durham the other night. Can we offically give Hart the nickname of “Nuc” if he continues to be wild?

I’m pitching for the Pirates on Sunday. Wish me luck!
