When will the Pirates will sign a big name free agent?

While I am very excited for Alvarez, Tabata, and D'Arnaud to get to the big leagues, and to see how our A+ prospects pan out, our team is going to have to add some free agents - probably a pitcher - in order to ever contend.  When do you think would be the time, if ever, for the front office to sign a big name free agent (~ $7 million or more per season)?  Will the team's revenue or record at a trade deadline be the more significant factor?  Would you expect the Pirates to wait until they are competitive at the trade deadline to make a move, or could they sign a legitimate #1 or #2 starting pitcher after the 2011or 2012 season?  I get that we need to save money in order to pay for Cutch and Pedro, but if we really want to compete for a World Series in the next 5 years, we need an ace, and he will probably have to come from outside the system.
