Andy Seiler Q&A thread at MLB Bonus Baby - Machado, potential Pirates 1st picks, and more

I asked a couple of questions to draft guru Andy Seiler pertaining to the June 2010 draft over at the MLB Draft blog, and received some helpful answers to each:

+Does Manny Machado stay at SS? How much projectable power does he have?

I think Machado stays at shortstop for the near-term. It’s a wait-and-see thing, because it’s hard to project how filling out affects some players. I think he stays at short due to the value at that position, but the long-term is unclear.

As for the power, I think he has above-average to plus power potential, and that’s due to quick wrists and forearm strength. He’s a Soriano-power type of hitter, not an Albert Pujols.

+Who do you think the Pirates will pick 2nd overall (given that Harper is taken first), and who would you take if you were the team’s GM?

I think Pomeranz is the target right now, but things change quickly. I think it could easily be Anthony Ranaudo, Christian Colon, Zack Cox, or Manny Machado depending on the day. I just wonder how much their budget for that pick is, because 3 of the 5 mentioned here are Boras clients.

I’d go for the best player available for value, and I’m not sure that’s Jameson Taillon, because I have a feeling that he’ll break records for a prep pitcher’s bonus. I’d seriously look at Machado for that slot, and I think I’d end up deciding between Ranaudo and Pomeranz, with Pomeranz winning out.

There's more information on many of the eligible prospects in the chat here.  Also, you can order his in-depth Draft Notebook here, which will be completed close to draft day.
