1985?
Things are bad now, don't get me wrong. 1985 though was an unusually horrible year during which we lost 104 games. Some of the worst players in Pirates history were on that team, for the sake of time let's only look at the outfield:
Steve Kemp, 92 games, .250, 2HR-starter
Marvell Wynne, 103 games, .205, 2 HR-starter
George Hendrick, 69 games, .230, 2 HR-starter
Sixto Lezcano, 72 games, .207, 3 HR-he was the power hitter in this outfield
Joe Orsulak, 121 games, .300, 0 HR-I actually liked this guy
Doug Frobel, 53 games, .202, 0 HR-he was supposed to be a great power hitter
I can't overlook, in my opinion, the worst player I ever remember with the Pirates, Johnnie LeMaster. His stats were worse than the outfielders; 65 games, .155, 1 HR.
Does anyone remember, was this season right before, or right after the drug trials?
It just came to me, this is the 25th anniversary of that team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Orsulak
was a fine defensive player. He made the greatest throw I’ve never seen.
This was 1983, game in Shea against a terrible Mets team. Pirates up a run in the ninth and Mets on first and third (think it was John Stearns on first), due to an effed-up grounder to Jason Thompson, and the batter hits a ball in the left center gap and Orsulak, playing CF, dives and misses. First runner scores, game tied. I figure second runner will score too and the game’s over, so I mark my scorebook accordingly.
After I do, I look up and there’s a ballsized rocket flying from somewhere in left toward home, and Stearns, who could run a little IIRC, was out by 10 feet.
I asked somebody who made the relay and was told there was no relay.
The rest of those guys? P.U.
85 was bad...
However, the way things stand now, I would sure take that pitching staff — especially Reuschel and Rhoden. If for no other reason, both would be primo assets for a trade.

I remember that team
It was atrocious and the organization clearly had no idea what it was doing. Chuck Tanner and his sunny optimist schtick were both well past their sell-by dates, attendance was almost non-existent, the drug stuff was going on, a really bad scene all around. A real malaise, as Jimmy Carter might have said.
As bad as it is now, it was worse then.
This team was the the begining !
Sid Thrift was the GM he traded Rhoden for 3 guys one was Doug Drabeck and Tony Pena for Andy VS. Also drafted Barry Bonds this was the start of a great team .
... and don't forget
.. LaValliere w/ Van Slyke.
Didn’t Sid Thrift then go to the Yanks, and turn them into the monster they became? You NEVER heard him get credit for that.
and then he
had a heart attack in a Paris bathtub, and…

That's a lie.
He’s plotting the big comeback with Elvis.
I remember Chris Berman
always calling him Jim “People Are Strange” Morrison and I didn’t know as a JR HS kid what it meant.
Got a little older and have been a big fan of The Doors ever since.
Gah.

My favorite Jim Morrison memory...
Was I think from the 87 season when Larry McWilliams threw a shutout and Morrison hit a HR to win the game 1-0.

Anybody miss Sammy Khalifa?
How about Benny Distefano and playing a little catcher in his career as a lefty?
Don’t remember if he did in any games in Pittsburgh, though.
The first game I saw on KBL Bill Almon hit an inside-the-park HR.
Joe Orsulak had no power whatsoever but, as bucdaddy points out, was a solid defensive guy with a strong arm and had a lengthy career.
My dad, grandfather, uncles etc. refused to watch the Pirates for the most part after George Hendrick had a couple of games where he pretty much refused to run to first.
And to think we gave up John Tudor and Brian Harper for Hendrick….
No matter what W-L ends up for the ’10 Pirates, they in no way, shape, or form should be equated with the ’85 bums.
I liked Sammy Khalifa.
I heard that he drives a cab in Arizona now.
The thing with his father totally blew my mind.
