Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

Around the Minors, 4/30

With the Bucs playing late again tonight, I figured I'd start a minor league thread for tonight's games.

Indy and Pawtucket are tied at 3 in the bottom of the 4th.  Brad Lincoln is struggling again, having given up 3 runs in 3 IP on 6 hits and 3 BBs.  He has 3 Ks.  Pearce has two doubles in his first two ABs.

Altoona and Harrisburg are scoreless in the 2nd.  Jared Hughes starting for the Curve.  Chase D'Arnaud and Matt Hague with singles in the 1st, but that's it.

Bradenton and Charlotte are scoreless in the 2nd.  Bryan Morris starting, 2 scoreless so far with 1 H, 1K, and a wild pitch,

WV and Greenville are scoreless in the 2nd.  Hunter Strickland starting for the Power.

Indy and Pawtucket tied 6-6 in the 5th

Lincoln gave up a 3-run homer in the 4th (his 2nd HR allowed), but Pedro countered with a 3-run shot of his own, his 5th of the season, to tie it.

Gotta take the good with the bad, I guess.

Pearce...

with 2 more extra base hits as well…and Tabata with a single and double.

2-1 Altoona after 2 innings.

Chase is 2-2 with a 2-RBI triple. Jared Hughes actually doubled, and scored one of the runs on the triple. Gorkys is 0-2 with a DP.

WV is tied 1-1 after three and a half. Jesus Brito homered in the top of the fourth to tie the score.

The Marauders are at it again

5-0 in the 3rd. RBI single by Calvin Anderson. Fryer hits a sac fly. BROCK HOLT! hits an RBI single, and a 2-run single by Latimore rounds out the scoring in the 2nd.

Morris has pitched three scoreless. 1H, 2K, 0BB, and a WP.

WV bats aren't coming out much though.

A solo shot by Jesus Brito is the only hit of the game for the Power.

Nice...

Sanchze HR not Grossman…but you probably knew that!

Six scoreless innings for Morris. His ERA is 1.01. I’m hoping to see him pitching for Altoona at Richmond this week.

by Traco Bucco on Apr 30, 2010 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

WV is down 3-2 after six and a half. They have two runs on only one hit, the Brito HR.

The Power tie it up in the eighth on a Cabrera double and Chambers single.

by Traco Bucco on Apr 30, 2010 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

Curve break it open with a three-run eighth. Two-run homer by Presley and RBI triple by Durham. 5-1 with Molleken pitching in the bottom of the eighth.

I like this minor league thread...

we should do this with all late games.

I was looking at the Bradenton box score

and couldn’t help but notice that Tim Beckham, the first overall pick by the rays in the ‘08 draft, is really scuffling this year. He didn’t have an overly impressive season in low A last year and is hitting .154 this yr.

by psdeuce on Apr 30, 2010 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Good!

Let’s hope they’re calling him “Not Pedro” by next year.

by Mr. E on Apr 30, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Gorkys just bailed him out with a diving stop

Should have been a double. Gorkys still is a great defensive prospect.

by psdeuce on Apr 30, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

If he could only hit...

just a little bit I’d be real excited about him. At this point I can’t envision anything but a 5th OF pinch runner/defensive replacement type.

by Slick1 on Apr 30, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Jordy Mercer Homered for Toona...

that’s his second. He continues to hit well. I’d like to see him get some innings at SS. I think he has the tools to be a good SS.

Indy looking kinda average

The starting pitching is pretty bad. If it weren’t for the hitting I don’t think they’d even be winning. Bad news for the Buccos who will need to add depth by June-July as they make some Roster decisions around the trade deadline.

It’s hard to think about it, but it looks like if Lincoln (and Morton) continue to struggle that 2011 may not be our breakout year. More like 2012-13.

Thoughts?

The AAA team functions, in large part, as a taxi squad for the major league team. Players come and go more often at AAA than at any other level. So, it’s harder to make any assessments about the overall quality of the team.

by Traco Bucco on Apr 30, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

that may be the case

And there is always opportunity for someone to play themselves right past AAA to the MLB without a natural progression.

Maybe by mid-2011 I’ll feel better about their prospects at a winning season.

What I can say for certain, is that I like what I see in our minor leagues. There are many good players at all levels, which gives the ML team lots of depth (for a change). Hopefully the team will continue to make the draft a priority, and continue to add good players for years to come.

If they do, there’s no reason why the Bucs can’t aspire to be a team like (and please don’t kill me here, I think this would be a good thing) the Brewers. They’ve got a roster of players built from within (mostly, or by trade), but they’re competitive every year, even on years when they don’t have the best players, like this season (because they’re trying out some new rookies, and the pitching is average).

by Pensburgh Pirates on May 1, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

True

but I think most here see 2011 as our “compete for .500” year anyways and the next 2-3 as our “window” for the playoffs.

by Mr. E on Apr 30, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Really hard to tell.

We don’t know how the offense will develop and we don’t know how long it will take the pitchers lower than AAA to develop.

by MarkInDallas on May 1, 2010 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The Morris, Locke, Adcock trio. . .

at Bradenton has been outstanding. I won’t get too excited until they repeat it at AA, but if 1 of the 3 turns out legit that would be fantastic.

by Scranton on May 1, 2010 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

for the sake of the franchise

we need at least morris and locke to make it as reliable big league starters if not aces. If Adcock makes it too that’d be great, but Morris and Locke are pretty key to this franchise imo…

by BurgherKing on May 1, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

And, pretty key to shutting up the fellas....

that try to assess trades as soon as they have been completed.

I would love for Locke and Morton to both be on our staff to shut up the ‘Nate McClouth was god’ crowd. Throw in a SP out of Brian Morris and our two ‘big trades’ will have more than made up as positive transactions.

That isn’t even recognizing our current 3B who is lights-out defensively and seems to be coming around to his minor league stats offensively, albeit without the power.

I hate Smizik….and Ryan Braun.
