Pirates Lose Finale to Dodgers, 10-2
I missed the first half of this, but it looked like a pretty ugly one. I tuned in just in time to see Hayden Penn get rocked in his Pirates debut. Since the Bucs weren't even sure whether to take him north a few days ago, I can't believe he'll get much rope, especially with Joel Hanrahan returning soon. As someone pointed out in the comments, Penn faced seven batters and didn't get a single swing and miss. He also got one of his outs on a play at the plate and the other two on a double play, so of the seven batters he faced, six reached base.
John Raynor also made his Pirates debut late in the game and drew a walk.

This might be a situation...
…where Penn getting stomped is a good thing, in that it’ll decrease the odds of him being claimed on waivers.
I didn’t see much upside there when we claimed him, though, so I wouldn’t be heartbroken about losing him.
Absolutely ......
the right answer. I actually would try to get him through waivers on Monday without having him pitch again. I think this actually works out as a positive. Get him to Indy and maybe he works his way to closing down there by the end of the year. See what you have.
so
we are effectively carrying another rule 5 pick in Penn, till Hanrahan comes back. There is the question of sample size, of course, but I didn’t see anything to comfort me…
I dont mind Raynor as much. In short bursts, I don’t think he’ll be terrible.
Anyone see DY’s 2nd double? Good start for him, huh? In spite of a few ugly swings in the first walk that he worked.
How ’bout guys all over the lineup from the starters to the bench drawing walks? What in the name of Earl Weaver is going on here?

Padilla, Kershaw, and Billingsley aren’t known as strike throwers. Still an encouraging sign since the latter two have very good stuff that less patient hitters could lunge at out of the zone.

i might have missed this..
and haven’t looked real hard at it yet, but why all the changes in game 3?? If it was a Righty pitcher thing, we faced one Monday and hit him pretty well. I’m not saying we would’ve won with our “regular” lineup in there, but I would think most momentum from Cedeno’s hit would kind of get lost when he sits the next game. I understand letting Duke and Ohlendorf out of the game with less than 100 pitches, but I can’t believe 2 games in 4 days is what Cedeno, Milledge, and Clement needed in the first week. (This is a carry over with me being annoyed with Russel sitting regular players so much last year too)
Day game after a night game.
Plus, you need to play your benchies at least once in a while, to keep them fresh.
For better or worse, Russell believes in scheduling rest days in advance, rather than trying to guess the hot hand.
never thought about that
and i understand the benchies need played, but the all at once thing is weird to me. spreading them out over a week or two makes more sense.
Also: the series win was secured. If you’re going to run some scrubs out, might as well do it after you’ve won the series.

I’ve never really understood the whole “we won the first two so we don’t have to try hard in game 3” school of thought.
The reason is it was an early day game after a late-night extra-inning game. It happens often with every team, especially when you’re starting a road trip on the other side of the country. They call them “getaway” games for a reason.
