I just now saw the Sports Illustrated column mentioning that 5 Pirate hitters were in the bottom 35 in the league in pitches per plate appearance. Just for fun here are the team's hitters this year:
Garrett Jones 4.09 (152 PA)
Bobby Crosby 4.02 (60 PA)
Jeff Clement 3.87 (100 PA)
Ronny Cedeno 3.86 (123 PA)
Andy LaRoche 3.82 (123 PA)
Andrew McCutchen 3.81 (155 PA)
Akinori Iwamura 3.81 (146 PA)
Ryan Doumit 3.71 (128 PA)
Delwyn Young 3.54 (54 PA)
Lastings Milledge 3.54 (136 PA)
Ryan Church 3.50 (72 PA)
For reference league average is 3.86. That puts Cedeno right at the average. Clement is basically right there too, and some of that is because he swings and misses so often. Crosby and Jones are the only guys on the team who see any more than an average number of pitches. Steve Pearce only has 21 plate appearances and Jason Jaramillo only 29. Their numbers are 4.57 (Pearce) and 3.48 (Jaramillo). Pearce has been over 4 for his career in the majors thus far.
