Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

So which Bucco's prospect bust were you sure would make it?

So, which Pirates prospect that busted were you absolutely convinced they would be a star in the bigs.

For me, it was Bobby Bradley. All I read about was how advanced he was as a youngster, how he had great breaking stuff (I should have read it as arm problems coming), etc.

I was clearly wrong about him.  He never even made it to the bigs.

I admit, I was wrong.

So it's Mea Culpa time Pirate fans.

Johnny Van Benschoten. as well as Chad Hermansen

by 2010 will be the year on May 17, 2010 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

agreed.

I also thought highly of Van Benschoten…I believe it was 04 that he was called up for a brief stint, and looked like the real deal. Then after surgery; the year he was minor league pitcher of the year in AAA he looked un-hittable….

I’m also really surprised by the bust Gorkys Hernandez has been…I remember the high praise he got in the Tigers organization, and then in the Braves system. I was really excited to see we acquired him, but it has been nothing but down hill since…

As former president

of the Chris Duffy Fan Club, I’m going with Steve Pearce.

J.J. Davis, who I thought would at least be a solid starting outfielder. I messed up, but in my defense, it didn’t help that the Pirates set up all kinds of roadblocks for him.

chad hermansen… although that may have been part wishful thinking because he was born five days before me…

by Captain Easychord on May 17, 2010 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Ron Wright's back literally fell apart and derailed his career.

Chad Hermansen not establishing himself as a solid big leaguer was a disappointment.

Going back to my teenage years, Mark Merchant not even making it to the majors was a big letdown.

by patthatt on May 17, 2010 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Actually, the back wasn't directly the issue for Ron Wright.

When he went in for a fairly routine surgery on the back, they accidentally cut a major nerve to one of his legs. That pretty much finished him as a “prospect”.

Big Country Brad Eldred

I watched him crush the ball in Altoona and hoped that would play in Pittsburgh – it didn’t…

by Teek82 on May 17, 2010 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

Though he failed at a much lower level,

still gotta throw out the legendary and now apparently forgotten Austin Manahan.

by bucdaddy on May 17, 2010 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely Hermansen.

He was so hyped coming through the system that I should have been ready to be disappointed…but I wasn’t. Honarable mentions: JR House, Brad Eldred, Midre Cummings, JVB and Bullington.

Freddy Garcia

I liked his power potential, but it never manifested itself in the major leagues, outside of a five-homers-in-six-games stretch in August ’98.

I still have alot of his baseball cards.

That one still hurts

Good player at LSU, hero of the College World Series, raked in the minors, third in ROY and then…

Nothing.

his problem was he screwed up his shoulder and played an half a season with it like that

at which point I think it fell off and sewed the remains of it back together stuck it on his body, but to his credit he is still playing

It's insane.

His shoulder was injured without medical treatment for so long (2+ years) that he actually wore a groove into the bone of the socket.

that is something that should not happen

No doubt.

The Littlefield-era medical staff was just God-awful. That isn’t even the worst example of a guy unknowingly playing hurt – poor Clayton Hamilton pitched with a broken rib for more than a year, after it was misdiagnosed as a strained oblique. As a direct result of the misdiagnosis, he eventually had to have the rib removed entirely.

by Vlad on May 19, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

did we not own an x-ray or MRI machine back during the Littlefield Error

did the Medical staff just have to guess at what was wrong with a player

I saw him throw 10 touchdown passes in a high school football championship game. Unfortunately, that is also the same number of hits he has in his major league career.

Does Kris Benson count?

I thought he’d be a stud.

Ollie Perez, JVB both also up there.

by Mr. E on May 17, 2010 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Benson definately
  1. pick and had a decent first couple of seasons only to get distracted and hurt.

Didnt you guys have Tyke Redman for awhile

I thought he was gonna be a star at the MLB level.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

depressing

all that supposed big league talent. it was jj davis for me.

but it shows how futile it is in most cases to look at minor league numbers and project to the bigs.

by MediaDavid on May 18, 2010 7:01 AM EDT reply actions

So many to pick from.

I’d have to say Chad Hermansen. He had a really great bat in the minors and then came up to the majors and did nothing.

Also, the way Tike Redman ended the 03 season and Chris Duffy ended the 05 season that the Pirates really had something with those two guys.

by IAPiratesFan on May 18, 2010 8:05 AM EDT reply actions

And while I wasn't 100% sure by any means...

…I was about as certain as it’s possible to be about a relief pitcher in rookie ball (who are, as a class, pretty much signed in order to get cut) that Eric Ridener had a future ahead of him.

Million dollar arm, ten cent head.

by Vlad on May 18, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's See...

I didn’t believe in Pearce or Walker (jury is still, kind of, out). I didn’t believe in Duke, he turned out well. I didn’t like Eldred’s strikeouts, and I don’t think Duffy would be a bust if Jim Tracy hadn’t changed him into a slap-hitter and changed the way he ran. Bullington was labeled a #3 starter by Littlefield RIGHT AFTER THE DRAFT! I thought JVB would be solid, but wasn’t too excited about him.

So that leaves me with Hermansen. I expected him to become what Bay became, and he didn’t come close. Another who I believed in was Hyzdu. He tore up AA, and I thought he would be great in the MLB. Then he fooled everyone for two weeks, when he became the best hitter in baseball, and then he failed. Looking back, we probably have the worst system overall since 1998. It’s sad.

Chad Hermansen and Brad Eldred get a two-way tie from me.

Too many!

We could probably add Jose Castillo to the list too. Too many to remember them all, lol, funny but sad. I think Hermansen was probably the biggest bust. Bradley was my personal biggest bust. I’m not sure if Benson was a bust but he never lived up to his potential either.
