Pirates complete trade for Dana Eveland.

It's official per DK at the Post Gazette.  The Pirates have traded Uviedo for Eveland.

Star-divide

It sounds as if Eveland will join the Pittsburgh rotation.  He has not had a very good season and sounds like a project to me.   Even though Eveland is a "starter" and not much older than Uviedo, Uviedo was an interesting prospect.  Personally I don't like this trade too much.  I supposed Eveland could turn out to be an effective major league starter and this will look like a steal down the right but I wouldn't count on it.  Oh well, we'll see what happens.

Hmmm, another finesse lefty, not very exciting. Hopefully he’s better than Burres, I guess.

He misses more bats than Burres.

And has had at least one MLB season where he was useful.

But on the whole, still not someone I would’ve traded anything of value to get.

…and we didn’t, really.

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

we did, unfortunately

what i m most interested in seeing is if the Blue Jays convert him to starter again.

With all the soft-tossing lefties on the roster now,

you’d think Dave Littlefield snuck back into Pittsburgh.

There’s got to be at least one more cheap, crappy lefty out there, so Zach Duke and Paul Maholm-start packing!

So let me get this straight...

We have our top pitching prospect, Brad Lincoln, coming up in a few weeks to join the rotation and we add this guy to the rotation first…with a 6+ ERA?

Gah, is Dave Littlefield still our GM? This is embarrassing. What is NH doing?

Does Eveland have any optons left because

It would seem to me that the Bucs will lose Veal (another lefty, albeit one with some smoke) and if Eveland can be sent down when Lincoln is called up, then we have a starter to replace Veal at AAA. All speculation on my part, but at least it eases the pain if it comes to fuition.

by long4willie on Jun 1, 2010 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

How will we lose Veal?

He’s on the 40 man roster and he still has options left, plus he’s pitching effectively at AAA. No reason to dump him

I think Willie is suggesting...

…that Veal might lose his spot on the 40-man this offseason. Personally, I would not view Eveland as much of an insurance policy/consolation prize, given that he’s of marginal value, but that’s just my opinion.

I believe that Eveland is out of options.

by Vlad on Jun 1, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Veal isn't pitching at all.

In fact…TJ surgery may be in his future…very shortly.

by Thunder on Jun 1, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly done for season

Thanks for the clarification on the options Vlad and Kareem, but it is possible that Veal will be done for the season with the elbow injury as most who get a 2nd opinion from Dr. Andrews don’t get good news. Of course if Eveland has no options, that blows my assessment for a AAA replacement.

by long4willie on Jun 1, 2010 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

During the season...

…you can be put on the 60-day DL, and you won’t count toward your team’s 40-man roster. However, all players on the 60-day DL must be removed from it prior to the roster finalization deadline for the Rule 5 draft. So when that time comes, they need to decide whether Veal is more valuable than a draft-eligible prospect of our own or a possible Rule 5 pick from outside the organization.

replacement

why do you assume its burres he will replace and not karstens who took mortons spot?

by srman on Jun 1, 2010 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

I will be honest

I’m in full support of the current FO… (at least their plan, their talent evaluation is, by definition, still in question)

BUT

I can’t (albeit its only been about 5 minutes) figure out how this makes sense. As far as I can tell Dana Eveland seems to hold less value than Uviedo, especially when speaking about the future. Considering this season (at least as far as W-L) isn’t terribly important, did we really need to make this move.

While ultimately this move will probably be inconsequential in the long run, its still a BAD move, at least in my opinion.

Sounds about right.

For all the complaining, I think most are still supportive of NH/FC and the way they've been rebuilding

the farm system and their work in Latin America. Just concerned that this Eveland trade smacks of days gone by, and worried what the Nuttings will and will not do to enable the team to be successful at the MLB level.

by patthatt on Jun 1, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

In a way, it's somewhat encouraging.

NH has only really done two things that sent me totally off the rails: This, and the Sanchez pick. Littlefield used to sometimes have three or four in a week. There was a stretch of about a year and a half there where I actually half-expected to pull up the PG site, read about some new dumbass thing that DL had done, and pop a blood vessel in my brain and die with my face on the keyboard.

Vlad:

Fill in the blanks:

If the Pirates draft ________ ___________ at #2 overall, it will put me into another apoplectic mood.

I still think it will be Manny Machado. Any thoughts?

by patthatt on Jun 2, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm, let's see.

I’d be unhappy about Colon or Cox, but for true apoplexy… Michael Choice, maybe? Or Matt Harvey? There are a lot of people who would make me unhappy, but 99% of them seem too absurd to even consider worrying about, in the absence of evidence.

I’m crossing my fingers for Machado, and I think he’s as likely a guess as any at this point.
