Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Link Roundup: Jose Tabata's Big Day

-P- This video of Jose Tabata on his callup, from the Post-Gazette, made me smile:

It was also great to see Tabata perform so well, even if neither of his hits really left the infield and he had to leave the game with a cramp. Brad Lincoln's debut wasn't particularly impressive statistically, but he did get through six innings, and the earned run total might have been better with some better defense.

-P- Jack Taschner won't go to Class AAA, which is a strange decision for a guy who had an ERA in the sixes and who has never been a particularly good pitcher. But in any case, his Pirates career is over. Good luck to him.

-P- WTM has little profiles on all fifty of the Pirates' draft picks.

LOL at Taschner

Yeah dude I am sure if we could just erase a couple of grand slams and bad outings from most pitchers in the ML’s they all would look a lot better statistically.

The article does have some serious whine to it. Especially about him “not giving up leads” and being asked to pitch mop up, like he had any choice.

Looking at the average leverage index (below 1 is low leverage, above 1 high leverage) the Pirates bullpen went:

Octavio Dotel: 1.8
Brendan Donnelly: 1.2
Evan Meek: 1.1
Joel Hanrahan: 0.9
DJ Carrasco: 0.9
Javier Lopez: 0.7
Jack Taschner: 0.3

That .33 number is among the lowest in the league. Right between how the Braves are using Jesse Chavez and how the Astros are using Jeff Fulchino. Pretty much just the guy you throw out there when the game’s already decided. Like I said when someone mentioned it on a Fanshot, you’d think a veteran who has had limited success would kind of understand and accept his role.

Best of luck to Taschner, though, he seemed like a pretty funny guy on the radio.

Jack Taschner

He probably would have been called up within three weeks.

What a fool. He’ll be playing independent ball.

Link

That actually was a funny link. JT’s perplexed by being DFA with an ERA of 6.05. His career ERA is 5.10.

Are you kidding, JT? You have to love his workhorse description and this quote:

“The way I look at it, when they gave me the ball with the lead, I kept the lead,” he said. “I have no blown saves, I didn’t take any losses and in the games where they were looking for guys to just go out there and eat innings because the starters didn’t do well or whatever the reason, I went out there and pitched as well as I could.”

by Bernie6 on Jun 10, 2010 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

You have to have self-confidence...

…to pitch in the major leagues.

Whether it’s particularly well-justified, or not.

by Vlad on Jun 10, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Too much ego can get you in trouble.

And in this case, out of work. Good luck to him, bur really, are the Pirates going to miss him. Probably not.

I loved that video of Tabata, as well.....

I know all guys are excited when they come up, but, he really seemed to honor it and treasure it. I think he is going to be with us for awhile….and I think that is a very good thing.

Plus, he is 21-yrs old.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 10, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

I’m sure he is also very excieted to play for the team which his favorite player played for. Roberto Clemente.

Taschner is 32:

Perhaps his agent should look into opportunities with Japanese teams the second half of the season since he doesn’t want to earn his way back to the majors.

I don’t think he’d last very long over there, either, but he could make some good yen for a few months.

by patthatt on Jun 10, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

You should be his agent

Seriously, that’s the best suggestion JT has gotten.

by Bernie6 on Jun 10, 2010 2:57 PM EDT reply actions

My new favorite thing

is any time Tabata talks. He’s so excited and his accent is great.

Does anyone have video from when they asked him what he told Pedro before he left? It was something like “I see you soon Papi. Just keep doin what you do and you be up with me soon”

So awesome

RIP NATE. RIP TONY PLUSH.

Actually

He reminds me a lot of the young Manny Sanguillen, before Manny mastered the English language. Seriously, he seems awfully hard not to like.

Manny mastered the English language? When did that happen?

Thank god he’s back in the lineup tonight.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Jun 10, 2010 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Yes. Bucs Insider says the lineup is:

LF Tabata
2B Walker
CF McCutchen
RF Jones
1B Doumit
3B Crosby
SS LaRoche
C Jaramillo
P Duke

Apparently. A lot of experimenting going on tonight. This will be interesting..

You’re right, my mistake. That makes quite a bit more sense

Understandable

It’s not like obviously stupid lineups are unheard of in Pgh.

by WTM on Jun 10, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point. At first glance at the lineup, I thought the #6 was referring to LaRoche and was confused. It didn’t help either that it was being discussed before about Andy’s future position. Hey, maybe they’d give Luigi a shot a short for a game or two, see how it goes.

let's be fair

he hits his share of tepid ground balls too

by chicos_pants on Jun 10, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

wow i read that

and i was like, boy the Bucs are really determined to keep Laroche…

by BurgherKing on Jun 10, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Supposedly they want to avoid risking Doumit being hit in the head behind the plate (foul tip, bat, etc.) so they aren’t going to let him catch for a few days.

by Jay32600 on Jun 10, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Doumit can’t catch until Sunday, for obvious reasons with the concussion symptoms. I guess we just have to deal with JJ for the next few days because there’s really nobody better to play

What is up with Pearce?

Any updates since the initial tweak/pull/stretch?

by BurgherKing on Jun 10, 2010 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

Sprained ankle.

Will go on a rehab assignment when he comes off the DL.

by Slick1 on Jun 10, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah i know that

but when will he come off the DL/ is e xpected?

by BurgherKing on Jun 11, 2010 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Dejan is reporting that Pearce will go on a rehab assignment in the middle of next week. Those things usually last a few days, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this one lasts a bit longer because NH is going to have to DFA, probably, Church to put him back on the roster. I think NH is stalling on Alvarez because he doesn’t want to DFA Iwamura. That’s two mistakes who’re going to have to go to make room. Much loss of face.

by WTM on Jun 11, 2010 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Is there a possibility...

that NH is going to try to trade Church and Iwamura for minor league fillers?

I can’t see them being worth anything, but NH has been able to find buyers before.

by Seven_Patch on Jun 11, 2010 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Also

I’m sure if Iwamura were traded, the Pirates would pick up most if not all of his salary.
