On signing draftees
I figured I'd update everyone here a little with how some of the other teams in the league are doing in the extremely important activity of signing draft picks. It seems as if some teams have really jumped out of the gate, here are some links
The Twins sign two

The A's sign frickin 17 already

The Phillies, Braves, and Rays all sign first round picks, (though in the Rays case, their second pick, 31st overall, a compensatory pick for not signing their pick from a year ago and the Braves pick is the 35th overall, supplemental first).

You can read the articles if you want but I will point out some highlights. The 35th overall pick in the draft signed for 800k, which seems to be really low, and either his agent didn't do his job, he really wanted to sign quick, or he got picked so early because the Braves knew he would sign cheap (possibly a combination of all three as well).
Out of the A's picks, the earliest drafted pick signed was their 6th rounder, so they still got a lot of work to do in signing their top picks same with the Royals, the earliest drafted player they signed was their 6th rounder, and the Astros earliest drafted player was their 4th rounder, with their next earliest being 8th.
I'm sorry I don't have more info, but I figured this could help a bit here and get some discussion going.

I'm just wondering
if this has to do with approach and style. Obviously getting players into the system quickly is helpful, but I doubt two weeks can make that much of a difference.
Just off the top of my head it seems like the Pirates (under NH and co.) have generally been a bit slow out of the gates, but the return has been good the last two years.

The issue with signing quick
always has to do with the leverage of the player and how much of an “overdraft” it was or if they are demanding over slot.
For example, Tony Sanchez signed last year right away because he and his agent knew going into it that if the Pirates didn’t draft him there, he was going to fall to late in the first round and not get as much as the Pirates were offering him at #4. So, part of the deal with him was the Pirates in pre-draft conversations settled on an approximate number with him and so it got done early.
The Pirates this year have a large amount of guys expecting over slot bonuses, as so it is going to take them a lot longer to sign that other teams that might need a lot of organizational guys this year.
Personally, I’m not “mad” they haven’t signed a lot of people quickly, but all things being equal, I’m sure all of us would like our draft picks to sign quickly and get into the system right away. I harbor no illusions that Taillon will sign quickly, and Allie will probably have us going down to the wire if we DO sign him. I’m extremely confident we will sign Taillon, but with the deep draft next year and Allie’s demands, I am less confident in signing Allie, (still think we will, over 50/50 odds at my guess, but I wouldn’t bet big money on it).
Outside of them though, you’d hope we got a lot of the RHPs into the system early so each of them can at least get a few games in for each. I know we drafted a ton of high school guys with leverage, but you’d at least hope we signed some of them very soon. It would be nice, but I agree, not vital to the club to sign as many as the A’s so quickly.
