Huntington extended, Russell's option may be picked up

I'm very happy to hear about the Huntington extension. He came in a from the start, made it clear he was building for the long-haul, and with his draftees just now starting to hit the MLB roster, I think he deserves at least another 1-2 years to see what he can do when it comes to actually piecing together an MLB roster once it has a little bit of talent on it.

If Russell's option is indeed picked up
A 19th consecutive losing season is 99.9999999999% certain

If Joe Torres is hired......
A 19th consecutive losing season is 100% certain.
Did you really expect us to win this year or even next year? If you did, I am pretty sure you are the one who is delusional and mistaken, not anyone else.

But Russell is costing the team about 25 games a year.

And 25
is probably the conservative estimate.

Who is going to be the first to complain about this move
because its not me, I think we are about a year or two from getting the monkeyour back and have a winner in Pittsburgh

Love the extension of Neal.....
With his drafts and his plan, he should not only get “1-2 more years”, but at least 3-4 years to see this through.
I am indifferent to Russell’s option being picked up. He doesn’t have a lot to work with, especially as it relates to a pitching staff. However, he doesn’t help either, by way of his constant line-up changes, his affinity for bad players (Church, Crosby, Iwamura, Donnelly, Lopez, etc.), and his curious use of his bench/pitching staff in-game.
If Russell is sent packing, I won’t be disappointed, although, like McClendon, he most assuredly isn’t the main reason why we have been losing.
Neal, on the other hand, needs extended and supported. People in the know around baseball love his plan, love his drafts, and love his philosophy. While the execution has been sometimes lacking, that is to be expected, as Charlie’s long post about a week ago reiterated.
Good stuff….I hope little Rosenthal’s sources are correct.

I'm not sure why a lot of the regulars on here seem to advocate support for Russell..
…I think 99% of us here know that the win/loss record isn’t Russell’s fault, not even close, so no one that’s against Russell (Myself included) would advocate a switch in manager’s would propel us to the division, or even respectability.
To me though, JR has had head scratching move over and over during his time here. First of all his lineups often make very little sense, even from an “out of the box” perspective. There’s really little excuse for Church stealing at bats from Milledge.
Secondly, his in-game management almost always leaves a lot to be desired. I remember one instance in particular earlier this year where he left Duke in to hit in a high leverage at-bat late in the game, only to have him walk the leadoff man the following inning and get yanked.
Third, this team hasn’t done the little things a growing team should be able to do. True, JR can’t make Milledge hit a HR, but he should be able to coach him well enough to understand baserunning. There’s alot of mental mistakes on this team that I personally put on the coach. If we say the coach has no influence on the finer details of the game (baserunning, effort, throwing to the right bag, moving a guy up) then we’re essentially saying the coach has no influence at all.
Fourth, JR has shown that he isn’t ever going to be passionate. I know that sentence makes most here cringe, and I’m not looking for a pop your top off Piniella or Bowa type. Part of this is still going back to Duke not retaliating when Cutch gets beamed. JR had to demand that, and when he apparently did call for it and Duke did nothing, we never heard another thing about it.
JR really is a scapegoat in this whole situation, but in my opinion he’s a pretty good scapegoat. He hasn’t done a good job in a number of areas, not to mention the PR boost the organization would get from canning Russell and bringing in someone competent, who shows he actually wants to be there.
1. Russell’s excuse for giving Church at bats recently has been “we are trying to get him going”. Translation: Huntington is trying to build him some value so he doesn’t have to release him.
2. Those situations with trying to get the pitcher another inning and it turns out he starts losing it happen all the time to all managers. Russell has been pretty good at managing the pitching staff, I would say. That’s one of his strength, IMO.
3. The real issue for the coaches is not if base running mistakes happen, it is if the people making them get better. For example, Garrett Jones was a terrible base runner last year when he first came up. To me, he seems much improved. Milledge has been making poor baseball judgments his whole career. I’m just not convinced that these issues haven’t been addressed, and the fault lies more with the players execution.
4. We don’t know what goes on behind the closed door. Supposedly, this issue was addressed.
5. I think it’s wrong to use Russell as a scapegoat. And, I am not a JR fanboy. I don’t think he has a good grasp of in game probabilities, and that is maddening to me. But there may be other things behind the scenes that he does well, and those may be more important right now for this team.

The only way we’ll improve at manager is if we get someone who is willing to tell the FO: Wait, you want me to play Church 60% of the time, and bat Iwamura or Cedeno leadoff for a while? Are you kidding me? I make the lineups.
Needless to say I don’t think that’s going to happen.

What did AL Pachino's character call it in Any Given Sunday
didn’t he call it “Interferance”. Unless we find a guy who is has a pair and will stand up to Nutting and NH about how to make the lineups, we will continue to see Church batting 5th.

why does russell seem like he doesn't wanna be there?
Is it because he doesn’t stomp around screaming and yelling? Is it because he doesn’t go rip a base out of the ground every time there’s a bad call? We saw with Lloyd how a “passionate” manager gets things done…No different in the W-L column than with the more reserved Russell. I question his game management as much as any other fan on here, but I do respect his even keel and level headedness. With the team we have now, it doesn’t matter much…But if we have a more competitive young team, that kind of stability at the top can make a difference between not getting too high on a win streak, and not getting too low in a slump. Not saying I’m an advocate for Russell in 2013 if we have a great lineup by then, I’m just saying he’s not the problem 100%

Ugh see what I mean??...
…It’s either John Russell or Lloyd McClendon. Those are the only two types of managers out there.
