Minor League Open Thread, 21 June 2010

Back by popular demand, and this time featuring the first appearance by your State College Spikes.

Daniel McCutchen and Indianapolis host Durham at 7:00.

Altoona is off.

Bradenton starts a doubleheader against St. Lucie at 5:00. Brian Leach and Casey Erickson will pitch.

West Virginia is off.

State College faces Batavia at 7:05. The starter will be Kevin Decker, the Bucs' 39th-round pick this year, who will be making his pro debut. He's not a high-profile name, but WTM thinks he could be a prospect.

Monday’s always a terrible day for baseball fans. Thursdays can be pretty weak as well. Today looks particularly bad in the majors. 3 games and two of them are 10 PM starts, none of them particularly interesting.

While I do agree...

… just gotta say that the D’backs pounding the Yankees tonight turned out to be a fun watch. Paul.

Decker

really improved on his stats this year over last year. hopefully he pans out, looks like well see tonight what he is capable of, never hurts to have to many pitching prospects in the farm.

Adcock and Locke

both have a WHIP > 1.1 and both have > 20BBs…two great numbers for the amount of innings they have pitched this year. any timetable on them being called up to AA or will they have to wait until guys like Owens and Morris move up first?

by C Shint on Jun 21, 2010 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

The GCL team played their first game this afternoon, losing 10-8. Brett Lorin made a rehab start, struck out four and allowed a solo HR in two innings. Michaelangel Trinidad had a 2B and 3 RBI. Exicardo Cayonez had a 2B and 2 R.

from my understanding

we just signed our 5th round pick did we not?

by C Shint on Jun 21, 2010 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes we did

http://www.buccofans.com/2010/06/2010-pittsburgh-pirates-draft-pick.html

Thats a total of 8 so far, and thats not counting Kingham. There is still a lot of time left but if I had to put the over under on it I think we are going to sign 30 players.

by Kosstic518 on Jun 21, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

30!!!

would be awesome, assuming we are getting the right kinds…

Allie is the one i m curious about… as in, about the approach of the FO. While he has a high ceiling, there’s tremendous bust potential there- 3M is def way over, imo. I would hesitate to go over 1.5M for Allie, and as has been reported, he turned down 2M supposedly!

by BurgherKing on Jun 21, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

In my humble opinion

From the way I see the MLB working, I don’t think there is any chance for the Pirates to put together and sustain a competitive team unless they continue to overpay for draft picks as they have over the last two years. They are going to continue to have to do this basically forever to be competitive.

That being said, I’m not saying Allie is worth $3M, and I’m not saying he is not worth $3M. But I’d much rather spend $3M on him than on a MR that we are going to flip at the deadline for a prospect with lower upside than Allie. If they are going to spend it, then they should definitely spend it on Allie.

by Kosstic518 on Jun 21, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

the other side to it is

that 3M might get you 3-4 solid prospects, like Dale Carey, Jared Lakind (sp?) as well as one of the more touted pitchers, Emanuel Kent?

Now if you think Allie is worth 1.5M, how high do you go?

by BurgherKing on Jun 21, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough to say

But if I had to give a number, I would go to $2.5M maybe $3M under the right situation. That right situation really depends on how the rest of the draft signings go, especially with respect to the pitching talent that we can sign. I think right now the number we would want to spend on him is higher than it would be right before the deadline as we only have 8 players signing instead of 15, 20, 25, or 30 players signed. I think the more players we sign, especially those from the upper rounds, the less the Pirates would be willing to give Allie.

I don’t think Taillon has the bonus leverage many people believe he does but if I’m the Pirates I make sure he gets signed no matter what.

by Kosstic518 on Jun 21, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

If you think Allie is worth $1.5M...

…then you go to $1.5M. Pay the dollar sign on the muscle, and no more. Because otherwise, it’s a bad investment.

That said, they obviously think that he’s worth more than $1.5M, or they wouldn’t have drafted him, given that they knew he had already rejected a $2M offer from another team at the time they decided to pick him.

by Vlad on Jun 23, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Huntington said he expects to sign 12-15 players...

If four of them are their top 4 picks this will be an awesome draft. If we get a couple more of the above slot picks like Emanuel, Kubitza (I think that’s spelled right), etc. it will be an out of this world draft IMO.

Reported last night that the Pirates and Nick Kingham have agreed to terms for about 400-450k.

Since its about almost twice the slot amount MLB will not make it official as of yet.

by BadAndy on Jun 21, 2010 5:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

i hope that report is true. kingham would be in the system faster than pounders was. and since this guy is sort of a project, he needs all the time in the minors as he can.

Extra innings in Bradenton

Wild pitch by St Lucie in the bottom of the 7th scores the tying run. Now top of the 8th.

Bradenton wins Game 1.

Walk off single by Austin McClune scores Adam Davis.

Decker

gives up a homerun. Is that all the starters for SC now?

Still SC leads 2-1 after 3 thanks to the hitting by Brown, Santos and Lyles.

by BurgherKing on Jun 21, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

Indianapolis losing 2 – nil to Durham. Surprisingly, Durham’s pitcher, Brian Baker, was relieved after 5. He had not given up a hit and struck out 5.

by OldHossRadbourn on Jun 21, 2010 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

They got six innings out of “Captain” Decker; he allowed three runs (two earned) and had a GO/FO ratio of 11/3. K/BB wasn’t so good, at 3/4.

by Traco Bucco on Jun 21, 2010 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

McCutchen done in Indianapolis

7 innings / 6 hits / 2ER / 4K / 1BB
Maybe its just me, but why relieve him? He had a 1-2-3 7th. He seemed to be pitching well. Is Vinnie Chulk a better option from the bullpen than McCutchen after 7 innings. We need our starters to to have the mentality of finishing games. If we want to limit pitches in the lower levels, I can live with that as long as we also instill the habits of going after hitters and not nibbling. Once they get to Double and Triple A, let them finish some games to get used to going deep and learning how to pitch out of jams.

Probably worried about workload.

Keep ’em healthy for as long as possible.

Bradenton’s second doubleheader game postponed.
Indy still losing 2-0, bottom of the ninth.
Not prospect news related, but Wilfredo Ledezma did a nice job of striking out the side after allowing second and third with no outs. He’s having a nice season.

This is really minor league

I went to see my nephew’s team play tonight. He’s 14 so I guess it must be Colt League. Anyway, his team pulled off a really pretty triple play (first one I’ve ever seen in person anywhere). Bases loaded and the batter hits a little pop between home and third. The pitcher makes the catch near the line and turns and fires a perfect throw to first base to double up the runner who had broken for second. Then the first baseman fired a perfect throw to the catcher, who blocked the plate like Ryan Doumit only dreams about and tagged out the runner from third trying to score.

We went to Dairy Queen after the game.

First day of summer.

God bless America.

Indianapolis loses 2-0.

Indianapolis hitters had 1 hit and Durham pitchers faced only 1 hitter above the minimum.

State College overcomes a 7-5 8th inning deficit to win their first game of 2010 8-7. 2010 draft pick Kelson Brown scored the winning run. He’s off to a good start.

actually all of
