I am new to the Dugout so hardcore fans take it easy on my analysis. I have recently been encouraged by the new crop of young guys that have come up through the Pirates farm team. At least, I am being told I should be encouraged by Pirate broadcasting crew and die hard Buco fans. But what really concerns me after watching the game last night is the Pirate pitching staff. I thought we turned a corner with the poor starting pitching last year. I remember the pitching coach getting a lot of praise for how he is turning the starting rotation around. However, this year it seems like the same old story..... we are lucky to see a Pirate pitcher go six solid innings. I was seriously disturbed by the fact that Charlie Morton was in the starting rotation in April...When he went off the rails... nobody had an answer. All we heard was Bob Walk and Steve Blass talk about his great stuff. Also, what is up with Zack Duke and Ross Olendorf? It seems like Paul Maholm is the only consistent starter. I hate to be a downer, but this situation does not look good and nobody seems to be saying much about it. I'm sorry... maybe Pedro, Jose, and Neil might be encouraging... but we need to get some starting pitching... now. Otherwise, this is going to be the same old story coming out of Pittsburgh and it is getting tiresome. Can anyone speak to the Pirate pitching prospects and whether things look bright in this area...
