Why in the World?

Why in the world are the Pirates making Steve Pearce Play 3B at Indy? It doesn't make sense (it's like they want all their players to be versatile as possible). Or is it they have no one really to play at 3B in Indy?

It just makes ...no sense at all...I read he did SS a long time ago...maybe high school. So far he's played OF, and 1B. Now at 3B to his resume....why not SS Then? lol....If he plays decent SS, the bats a big bonus lol.

The more positions you can play

the more valuable you are to team. My question is why not

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

Meh, maybe he’ll be good there. He’s a little on the short side for a first baseman and is a right-handed fielder. It’s a long shot, but if he can play a better third base than Pedro we can move Pedro to first, upgrade the defense, and still have an above average 3B with the bat.

That said, I doubt it works out at all. He’s not especially athletic.

Also, the dude’s been playing first base in the pros for six years. I doubt he’ll forget how to do it if he doesn’t start there in his rehab appearances.

If he's playing third base...

…then that would suggest that they want to see whether he’s a better option there than one of the team’s existing 3B. Seems like Young would be in the most jeopardy out of those other options, given that he can’t actually field the position at all.

Pearce did play some 3B in college. Per his South Carolina athletic bio, he had 21 games there his junior year, and was expected to be the team’s starting 3B the next season if he hadn’t signed.

People here were excited about him at third base

He was supposed to bring pretty decent defense here

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.

It could be they want to see if he can do it

And it could be they just don’t have a lot of good options at 3B right now so they might as well put Pearce there so they don’t disrupt the rest of the team. Myrow was playing 3B the other day and that was terrible. With Aki going down to Indy, he might put him there when Pearce comes up.

If he can field...

good enough, we may have a very valuable bat on our hands. Maybe they thought since somethign crazy worked with Walker, why shouldn’t it work for Pearce.

I think it's obvious

They’re going to give Pedro every chance to stick at 3B but he obviously has a lot of work to do. Most people always assumed that he would move to 1B eventually and Andy would play 3B. However, it seems that they want to see if Pearce can pull a Neal Walker and take the spot since he was hitting so much better than Andy and is (probably) better with the glove than Pedro.

What’s Pearce’s arm like? Range issues aside, Pedro has a cannon.

I think they just wanted his bat in the lineup w/o benching anyone...

They probably didn’t want to bench Clement, Moss, Van Every, or Myrow, and none of those guys could play 3B. So they thought, why not?

The organization doesn’t care about wins and losses at Indy, and the 3B spot isn’t valuable this very day for providing somebody fielding experience. So why not get everyone at bats?

by feinberge on Jun 23, 2010 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

Myrow’s been the regular 3B the last several games. He has a good amount of experience there, although it’s been a while.

I've heard Myrow is a butcher at 3rd...

So why not let Pearce be a butcher there for a game? It’s a 1 in a million that either of those guys would ever play 3rd in an MLB game. I guess there’s a shot in the dark that Pearce shows he can play there, but really, it’s just about at bats.

i really think

that Jones and Moss and van Every need to start losing ABs… none of them is likely to be much good…

To give them to whom?

by Vlad on Jun 23, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Pearce

for instance… let him play at RF… unless the team is serious about seeing if he can handle 3B.

by BurgherKing on Jun 23, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Church and Young are in today’s configuration. No excuse for that. Bring him up and it doesn’t matter whether it’s at 3rd base, 1st base, outfield, DH, 5th infielder, or whatever.

Why in the World?

Is Church playing again and Milledge is sitting? What the F! is wrong with Russell. He had better be under orders from NH and if that’s the case What the F! is wrong with him? This is getting so damned frustrating. I can’t wait until Church is off the roster, I could care less about his defense at this point.

by Slick1 on Jun 23, 2010 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

if those are orders from the FO

then:

1. lose some games…

2. See if there’s any chance at all he hits a few HRs, gets someone interested!

Although I dont see why Milledge is sitting… not both of Church and DY should be playing!

Couldn't agree more

Seeing Edge on the bench with Church or Young starting drives me insane. Especially with the way he’s been hitting lately with RISP!
