Minor League Open Thread, 3 June 2010
People tend to like these on off days, so here we go. Four pitching prospects are starting tonight, so it's a nice day for an open thread.
Brad Lincoln starts for Indianapolis against Gwinnett at 7:05.
Tim Alderson, who has been much better recently, starts for Altoona at New Britain at 6:35.
Nathan Adcock starts against Lakeland at home in Bradenton at 7:00.
Nate Baker pitches for West Virginia against Lexington at 7:05.

summarize the opposition?
can anyone do this please?
I know gwinnett is the braves AAA, and the Braves are usually good.
Lakeland seems to have scored quite a bit against us… but I dont know how good/bad they are…
what about the rest?
Just naming some prospects:
Gwinnett is the Braves team. Not a ton of great prospects there. 1B Freddie Freeman got a lot of hype and is considered the 1B of the future, but he’s having a disappointing season numbers-wise. Only 20 years old in AAA, though. Jordan Schafer was supposed to be their CF of the future but struggled in the majors last year and is off to a rough start this year as well. Could be injury related.
New Britian is the Twins AA team. I’m not familiar with a lot of them, but scouts are semi-high on OF Ben Revere and everyone likes pitcher Kyle Gibson (’09 draft).
Lexington is an Astros team. Everyone liked SS Jiovanni Mier out of HS last year, but he’s having a rough go of it early. I’m not that familiar with the rest of the team.
Lakeland is a Tigers team. They’re doing well record-wise, but most of their best hitters are pretty old for A+ (24-26 year olds). Some interesting pitchers.
Lincoln pitching tonight probably rules him out for Tuesday vs. the Nats.
That sucks, because I don’t want to see Karstens, Eveland, or Burres start this team’s only national TV game in about eight years. Yes, I am irrational.
Eh, actually I guess it doesn’t. I’m losing track of my days of the week.
I hope this is his last start for Indy if he pitches well.

Good as place as any to ask
What’s the deal with Quinton Miller? Last I heard he had tendinitis, but that was almost 2 months ago and he still hasn’t pitched since
I vaguely remember reading that he was expected to be shut down for a while still, but I can’t remember any specifics.

Altoona @ NH on Saturday
picked up a few tix for Saturday’s game, gonna make the drive from Boston. Anyone know who will be starting on the mound? I think it might be Morris, which would rock.
Day or night?
I should try to go. I went last year and had a great time. Pedro hit one around the earth via Rt Field.

NH is a nice park
I saw Altoona there last year, and the promotion that day had something to do with wedding vows; a bunch of people walking around in veils and such.
anyone listen to Altoona?
Looks like Alderson was OK not dominating. 6IP, 5H, 1 ER, 2BB, 1K. Run was an HR.
Still better than April. Does anyone have more insight?

Indy announcers speculating on June 8 vs Strasburg
I don’t thnk this will happen but it’s fun to think about.
Yinzers uber alles
It should happen.
The guy was picked four years ago. His development needs to move to the next stage. I bet you he’s already better than Burres and Karstens, probably Eveland too.
by Suffering Buc on Jun 3, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
It makes sense in a way. There won’t be much pressure on Lincoln because of the hype that’ll surround Strasburg.

I think he gets bombed in Pittsburgh.
Not Charlie Morton bombed, just a nomral bombing. Perhaps to the tune of a 5.50 + ERA, or at least peripherals which support such.
David Rubinstein?
Seems to be doing well in West Virginia, .830 OPS. Is he a prospect or a soldier? It seems that he is a bit more developed than Robbie Grossman at this point. And where in the world is Wes Freeman?
Rubinstein is Jason Delaney.
Freeman is in EST. He’ll probably resurface at State College.
by WTM on Jun 3, 2010 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes. Freeman is currently listed on State College’s roster.

That roster doesn’t appear to have been updated since last year.

Alvarez, Tabata and Lincoln
I m of the view that we need to promote them when they are ready, and if there’s stuff they need to work on in the minors, then they should be left there. However the other issue with 3 players this close is, whether you want to leave them down the extra year. There’s no point promoting one of these guys in August.
So, unless there’s something they should be doing in the minors and not in the big leagues, they should be up by July.
For Lincoln and Tabata, it seems to me that whatever things they are working on, they can continue to work on in the majors. It might cost Lincoln a few runs but he might as well start adjusting to big league pitching. For Tabata, too, with power seemingly the only thing left to check off, I m in favor of bringing him up soon.
Alvarez is the only one I m not convinced about. I really don’t know if an extra year of AAA is worth it, but it might be. His K rate is not at all good and I would be very concerned about working that kink out at the big league level. Pittsburgh really really needs him to be a stud for the 6 years, and I m in favor of letting his performance decide when he comes up. If he can keep his K rate at about 22% or less for a month, while OPSing the way he is, bring him up, else AAA
I have always thought Tabata and Lincoln would be up in June and Pedro in 2011. With Andy struggling maybe Pedro does come up in 2010, but I can see both sides.
Personally, I think Tabata should already be up. Lincoln is also making a statement recently. I hope both are up in June. I think Pedro still needs some work.

I’m in favor of keeping Tabata down until he shows some power, and Pedro until he cuts down on the Ks. The anticipation of the fans, together with the often toxic atmosphere that comes with losing all the time can wreak havoc on a players development. Neither seems to be as mature, confident, or agreeable as Cutch, who has thrived despite the less than optimal conditions with the big club.
Lincoln I think should come up once the control calculations have been made.
you sir
no nothing of what Jose Tabata is capable of then. What is the difference if he develops the power at AAA or the MLB, its still going to be power. he has shown he can make contact each and everyday, has shown good baserunning abilities, and has shown he plays good defense. If the problem is he cannot hit the ball over the fence at an alarming rate then i think just about half the league should still be at AAA working on their “power”
no one, sir
"no"s what JT is capable of. He’s very young, and the Pirates aren’t going to make any noise in the NL central this year. Let’s see what they have in Milledge, Jones, and Clement. JT has plenty of time.
know* sorry
Milledge has had his time, get him out of there. Jones plays RF/1B….Tabata can easily play LF and has got a few starts in LF recently. I would like to see Clement get more playing time too but its clear now thats not going to happen. And what does noise have to do with Tabata being called up. Clearly the Pirates arent going to be in the running but that shouldnt stop a team from calling up a guy who is raking in AAA and deserves his shot.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I’d like to see Milledge over the course of an entire season. I’m not optimistic that he’s going to be an all-star, but maybe there is something there. Further, I would expect Tabata to perform similarly to what Milledge is doing if called up at this point. I understand your anxiousness to see a quality prospect in Pittsburgh, I just think he needs a little more time. His tenure with the organization has been somewhat eventful, and I have high hopes for him when he does arrive.
Milledge has played more than entire season in his professional career. And im not being anxiousness, personally i want Alvarez to stay at AAA until next year, its just Tabata deserves the callup. Give credit where credit is due. He is killin it at AAA, what is a little more time going to do?
He isnt going to wake up one day and suddenly say “oh i think today i will show more power”…if it comes then it comes, if not then its not coming. he had a triple and double today, thats two extra base hits. what more do you want from this guy???
Milledge only just turned 25. Not every player develops at the same rate? Jose Guillen’s trajectory comes to mind, in both Milledge’s and Tabata’s case. Like I said, I am excited about Tabata, so much so that I am in favor of an extra-cautious approach.
alright then, i guess here is what Tabata should do then in order to get a promotion. he needs to change his approach at the plate compeletly in order to hit more HRs because clearly he has “no power” . in this way he can go 1-5 every night but at least he will be hitting home runs. yes yes, this appears to be what Tabata must do to get that promotion…………
Promoting Tabata
Tabata’s MLE OPS right now is .704. Good defense and SB’s will help his value, but he’s just not going to blow the league away or “force our hand” with those numbers. If we keep him at AAA, we’ll get more of his prime service time, and we get more time with Milledge, who batted a .706 OPS in May. He’s controlling the stike zone better than he has at any point in his MLB career, and there has to be more power in there somewhere.
I can’t see a reason to bench him in favor of a guy who might be a slight upgrade.

Presley hits a HR in the 10th
Moskos gave up 2 in the bottom of the 10th, but held on for the save
Moskos 2 runs were unearned
Bringin his ERA down to 1.46

whats the deal with Moskos this year, I havent heard too much of him althought from that ERA, he looks like he is doing a great job
I’ve seen different things from different people, but his velo seems to be up to 90-94 and his slider is supposedly much improved. He does seem to be much more like the guy they thought they drafted.
Seems a lock to move up soon, wouldn’t you think? In fact, I think Coonelly said as much in his chat the other day, although I doubt he’s involved in that sort of decision.
well
i mean his stat line looks good, i just dont know how quickly a reliever should be moved through the system. how long would a reliever have to prove himself to get a promotion if you know what a mean? 20-30 IP? so many saves? so many holds? minimal ERA?
i am just at a loss for how i would think to promote a reliever is all
nothing to do with saves or holds, thats for sure
if they think he has as good command of at least 2 pitches as he can develop he should be moving up. One of them should be the fastball of course.
any latest word on Tony Sanchez tonight?

Charlie
Not sure if you are still on, but I was responding to a post over on OnlyBucs and dredged up a memory of your It Takes Time series of posts from very early 2008 (shortly after NH took over). I was curious if you have thought about now doing an NH perspective piece comparing his performance so far with those GM’s (and their situations)? Seems like the piling on NH’s trade returns is defended pretty well by citing what those GMs got back. For those still on the thread, here is the link to the first in the series (about the Royals):
Huh. That’s an interesting idea. I’ll think about that.
