Tomorrow, the Pirates are most likely going to pick Manny Machado or Jameson Taillon with the 2nd overall selection in the draft. But if history is an indication, that won't be the only talent the team will acquire. In the past two drafts, the Pirates have picked up another player in Baseball America's top 50 (Robbie Grossman in 2008, Zack Von Rosenberg in 2009) along with prospects in later rounds. I'll post video of a sample of the candidates for later round picks after the jump. Some of the most recent video I could find for a couple of these players was from last fall, but at least we can get the idea of what they bring to the table.
Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills (CA) HS
Mike Foltynewicz, RHP, Minooka (IL) HS
Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa (CA) HS
Rob Rowland, RHP, Cloverdale (CA) HS
Kevin Gausman, RHP, Grandview (CO) HS
Out of the pitchers in this set, Foltynewicz stands out, IMO, followed by Tago. Rowland is a huge pitcher in stature, which is what the Pirates prefer, so he is a realistic over-slot pick with some projection
Thoughts? If you want me to add any other players to this post, let me know in the comments.
