Homeboy
It's possible
that a player from Morgantown/WVU will go is the first round today. Jedd Gyorko is WVU's all-time leader in a number of offensive categories (he's been in the program three years). This season he turned up his power and cranked 19 homers in 57 games. He's a shortstop but projects more as a second baseman or third baseman.
Just wondered if there are any other homebodys with as good a shot at going high up.
Oh, and it's a freaking shame that Duquesne is cutting its program after, what, something like 118 years?

Joey Leonard
from the ‘ville (Connellsville) via P I T T Let’s Go Pitt!
Does Connellsville
still have the first-rate high school/Legion program it did 25 years ago? Still the only high school I’ve heard of that had a separate lockerroom just for the baseball team.
Is that old crank who usd to manage the Legion team still alive, Herman Welsh? He was fun to watch but must have been a bitch to play for.
Connellsville used to be a feeder for the MLB
I do not believe Herman Welsh is still there and I believe he passed away several years ago. He was legendary in the day. Legion baseball used to the lead the headlines in the Daily Courier (no part of the Trib Total Media conglomerate).
Connellsville has fallen prey to population shrinkage and well as lack of interest in sports. Wrestling and girls softball are still big, but the once proud football and baseball teams struggle to get kids to even play.
i grew up in connellsville, (‘99 graduate). certainly not what it used to be when it comes to sports. as vanslyke said, declining population is a big key. i graduated with over 500+ kids, now their sr. classes are only in the upper 300’s i believe. just enough to still be AAAA, which in football, it has been a death sentence.
the seperate lockeroom is still there, called it the fieldhouse. alot of good stories came out of that place.
Joey Leonard played in my wooden bat summer league 2 years ago, man did he fill out. He was probably the same height, but was about 180 lbs. now he is 6’6 220 lbs. And still room to grow.
i played college ball at cal u, so i still follow the team some. they have an OF who is listed in Baseball America’s top PA players. Sam Dimatteo is his name. Outstanding #’s for a Division 2 player. probably will be a late round pick.
Not projected to go very high due to a committment to Duke
but South Fayette product, Dylan Havilund, should get selected. He’s a lefty that throws around 88. He’s a gym rat and a good kid.
Matt Berezo and Stephen Laylock from Pine Richland are both having fantastic years. Laylock has a solid commitment to Virginia Tech though and Berezo is commited to Duke. I think that if either player is picked (which would likely be somewhere in rounds 30-50) then they would both consider signing

I don't see any local guys going in the first round
including WVU’s player.
He doesn’t have a position.
Welllllll
I figured “first round” might be optimistic local-boy hype/
