Capps Watch

Matt Capps' last 10 appearances, dating back to May 17:

8 IP, 21 H, 14 R, 9 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 3 HR, 10.13 ERA, .467 Opp Avg, 4 Blown Saves in 8 chances.

I still wasn't a big fan of cutting Capps loose, and his recent struggles affect the Pirates as much as his early performance did (meaning, not at all), but if fans are gonna toss Huntington under the bus when Capps demonstrates 6 weeks of competence, it's only fair that we temper that bile by pointing out that mayyyybe Capps is still just a decent relief pitcher and taking him to arbitration did in fact carry a reasonable amount of risk.

I'm sure the PBC Blog will soon be filling up with "Turns out that Matt Capps did in fact represent a gamble perhaps not worth taking for a $3.5 mil pricetag when comparable relievers are not incredibly difficult to find - we apologize, Neal, you at least had a defendable rationale and were not just being cheap" comments, right?
