MLB DRAFT DAY 1 OVERFLOW

"He's got to face nine of the best hitters in the world"

-Lastings MIlledge regarding Stephen Strasburg's debut

Star-divide

Obviously Lastings holds Bobby Crosby in higher esteem than most of us, but hey, I like the attitude.

Buccos next pick is #52 overall

I hate the way Bud Selig says "Los Angeleeez"  among other things that I hate about Bud Selig

Bought a mint condition Lemuix era Penguins throwback at a thrift store for my roomate today for $10.00  He's lucky I dont like the Penguins

About 20.

Our next pick is #52, I think.

Wonder what team Milledge thinks Strasburg is facing?? It isn’t the Pirates, who are now last in the NL in runs scored…and by the end of the night tomorrow could be last in the majors as the Orioles are only 1 behind.

by Thunder on Jun 7, 2010 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

It could be Milledge having high spirits and all.

God forbid him.

from a chuck finder piece at the PG...

“They’re one of those teams that can’t go out on the huge market and compete with those (large-market) teams,” Taillon said on a conference call soon after he was drafted. “Any time you get picked by one of those teams it’s a huge honor. I guess they see me as a future piece of that organization.”

I like that attitude!

haha

heres the full quote

Milledge also said, “He’s got to face nine of the best hitters in the world” — though, based on their stats, that wouldn’t seem to include the Pirates. Their .237 team batting average is tied for the NL’s worst, even though they beat Phillies ace Roy Halladay (FSY) three weeks ago.

Pedro: 17 BB's, 24 K's in May

Anyone who bitches about that line is just looking for something to bitch about.

Dude has obviously refined his approach, he is hitting LHP better than RHP right now, and, besides 2 games in his last 20 games, his K’s have been really solid for a power-hitter.

Bottom-line: I think he addressed the FO’s questions and now is on track to be up in the first part of July.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 7, 2010 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

He better be up sooner than that.

SSS but against LHP

he’s upped his AVG and OPS tremendously, as well as K’ing less.

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I replied in the last thread, but here goes

I love that Pedro is in the system. I’m just a proponent of being ultra-conservative when it comes to prized prospects. Let them learn away from the vicious gaze of Bob Smizik and the rest of the yinzers. He’s been doing well for the past month or so, but “raking” is an overstatement. What is the rush?

by coreysc on Jun 7, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it would be considered a rush ......

if you told the Bucs FO that Pedro would be a mid-season call-up in 2010 when they drafted him. In fact, I think they would say that he would be right on track.

Entering the season, they were planning on him being up around this time, maybe a bit later.

And, yes, batting .310 in May, and .400 or so in June, with a shit-load of XBH is indeed raking.

College baseball

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling like NCAA baseball will be obsolete in 10 years? It seems like more and more every year, teams are taking high school players and more young players are making an impact.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Jun 7, 2010 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

I find it interesting that HS players that get drafted in the MLB draft, then don’t make it to the bigs and thus never receive an education are not criticized, yet the NBA has been putting in age restrictions in their draft due to criticism.

by psudynasty on Jun 7, 2010 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s different in about every sport.

Football players have to play 3 years in college at a minimum. Hockey players often leave high school early to play for junior teams, then break into the NHL at 18-20 years old. Basketball is 1 year in college now. Baseball seems like anything goes.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Jun 7, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The NBA put in the age restriction (which is stupid, BTW) to placate the colleges, who serve as their free farm system.

by maguro on Jun 7, 2010 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t buy that indentured servitude playing for NCAA if you are good enough to make money is a great thing. Especially in football.

by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

No other sport does that. Baseball, soccer and hockey all allow players who are good enough to play professionally.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Jun 7, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. Accredited BAs via online are not huge barrier at this point, so I’m not worried about the kids’ education since they at least have the opportunity if they want it via signing bonus.

by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Also most HS MLB contracts contain protected money for college, unless the HS kid doesn’t ask for it. In that case, then they probably aren’t going to attend college so it wouldn’t matter…. :)

There seem to be some chance a few of those HS arms make it though…and once they make it through, they turn into overslot possibilities. Will be very interesting as teams now have ~14 hrs to think over their 2-30 rnd strategy.

I think there should be a slotted system for the comp round picks...

..after the top 10 in the 2nd round. Yes, the Angels had a tough time of it losing a bunch of guys through FA, but in all fairness, do the Nats, Pirates, Astros, and a bunch of other teams need these players more?

I guess this would be hard to negotiate with alot of teams, I just feel that the top 10 worst teams shouldn’t be hurt by “comp” picks.

How ridiculous is this Boston gets Ranaudo and Brentz in a comp round? Seriously..

Really?

That’s a million more than Alvarez who was a much more “sure thing”. I think $6.5 gets it done…can’t believe they would have went with Taillon over Machado if they thought it would take that much.

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Just looked it up

He got a 4.7 mil bonus, ML contract (!), bonuses and clauses could push total to 7 million…I would expect something like that, plus 10% to get Taillon

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I still like him.

I’d be happy with him if he were the pick. But it all comes down to how much $ he wants.

by Vlad on Jun 7, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t see NH going for two very expensive HS arms.

by WTM on Jun 7, 2010 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

I'm with you

But until our pick I’m doing to dream on Allie

by BattlinBucs on Jun 7, 2010 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Nats could take Allie

but would that break their bank? Would it break ours?

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

It would break theirs, I doubt it would break ours. They’ve shelled out a TON of cash for Strasburg and will have to for Harper. We played it safe last year so the money is there.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Jun 7, 2010 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

They’re from BA, and I have the top 50 only. He’s not in the top 50.

by Traco Bucco on Jun 7, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

In BA's rankings...

…he’s #166. They say third-round tools, first-round price tag.

Other people probably like him more than that. That’s probably kind of his scouting floor.

Aside from jacoby jones

who you guys have me pretty jacked for, are there any remaining high-end potential SS prospects, that are likely to stay at SS?

by coreysc on Jun 7, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Dietrich

possibly… I like dietrich quite a bit but not 2nd round top of the!

by BurgherKing on Jun 7, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a secound round talent...

but most don’t think he’ll stick in the MIF. His bats pretty legit though. I wouldn’t be upset with the pick if we went over slot later. At this point though I’m kind of drooling over the possibility of Allie or Cole.

Again...

2010 PBC Draft Strategy isn’t in focus yet…could be they blow their budget on like 5-6 guys and then sign a few org guys.

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

be sweet to grab Stetson Allie

but theres alot of good players left i would take Jacoby Jones or Yordy Cabrera though get that SS since we took the arm

by BigB2323 on Jun 7, 2010 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

I forgot about Cabrera...

…that would be interesting.

I think ultimately we go with a college bat – Eibner if the Nats pass.

Well guys,

That was fun, hopefully we have more fun tomorrow.

Time to play some WoW before they shut down the server for an entire day.

Just googled John Van Benschoten

Didn’t realize he currently holds the all-time major league record for highest career ERA with at least 75 innings pitched!

by coreysc on Jun 7, 2010 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Machado/Cole and possibly Machado/Allie might have been better than Taillon, especially since I do doubt we will do 2 big-budget prep arms. But, the past is the past.

Especially with there not being a lot of eye-popping SS left at this point.

Taillon is talented, though. No doubt about it.

by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Taillon/Allie?

That would be CRAZY…but this FO does think out of the box.

Taillon/Wilson might be interesting as well.

by SpacePirate on Jun 7, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m for Allie or Cole. I’m guessing that we should be able to get a good HS position player in round three.

by Traco Bucco on Jun 7, 2010 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone want to hear something funny?

So a kid I went to high school with was angry that the Pirates took Taillon, something about Sean Burnett being the last prep arm they took. So I told him that Taillon had the highest upside, and had three plus pitches. He responded by telling me he’s getting hit this year, and I shouldn’t try to talk about baseball with him because he plays or is in the world of baseball or something (at some crappy small college FYI). So I responded by saying he has been hit, but not all that hard, and it’s due to his tendency to tip a few pitches and leave his fastball up in the zone, both of which can be easily fixed. So I waited for a response and none came. So I went back to look at his status to find he had unfriended me. I don’t know if it was because I took offense to the fact that he knew more than me cause he’s a (not very good) player, or just over the petty argument that taking the number 2 talent at number 2 could possibly be a good thing, but I thought it was amusing.

Harper

Harper really seems like a jag bag to me, maybe that’s because he is 17.

It took me about 20 minutes to find earlier...

Wouldn't it be lovely

To have Aki’s paycheck to throw at this draft? Different budgets, we all know, but just sayin’…

by RichieHebner on Jun 7, 2010 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

I know I'm a bit of an Auburn homer...

but the Pirates should seriously consider 1B Hunter Morris tomorrow. First base is a clear position of weakness right now with no definite answer there long term (assuming Pedro doesn’t move across the diamond). Morris has all kind of power from the left side and could wear out the short porch in right field at PNC Park. I think he’d be a great pick.

by mspirate on Jun 8, 2010 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

I read his scouting report and I agree with you.

I wouldn’t be upset if we got him at 2-2 and if we got him at 3-2 (after drafting one of the HS guys that fell) then I’d be ECSTATIC!

by houksyndrome on Jun 8, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm down with this

I think we take best hitter without huge price concerns in round 2 and then look for a few over slot, high upside guys later in the draft with the intention of signing 2-3. It will look like the Pedro draft but flip Alvarez and Scheppers.

by Mr. E on Jun 8, 2010 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope your right with the players left on the board

theres no reason the buccos cant grab a stud today with there 2nd pick

by BigB2323 on Jun 8, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

please, for the love of god, take allie or cole tomorrow. it wouldn’t kill nutting to spend an extra 5m in the draft this year.
