MLB DRAFT DAY 1 OVERFLOW
"He's got to face nine of the best hitters in the world"
-Lastings MIlledge regarding Stephen Strasburg's debut
Obviously Lastings holds Bobby Crosby in higher esteem than most of us, but hey, I like the attitude.
Buccos next pick is #52 overall
I hate the way Bud Selig says "Los Angeleeez" among other things that I hate about Bud Selig
Bought a mint condition Lemuix era Penguins throwback at a thrift store for my roomate today for $10.00 He's lucky I dont like the Penguins

Wonder what team Milledge thinks Strasburg is facing?? It isn’t the Pirates, who are now last in the NL in runs scored…and by the end of the night tomorrow could be last in the majors as the Orioles are only 1 behind.
from a chuck finder piece at the PG...
“They’re one of those teams that can’t go out on the huge market and compete with those (large-market) teams,” Taillon said on a conference call soon after he was drafted. “Any time you get picked by one of those teams it’s a huge honor. I guess they see me as a future piece of that organization.”
I like that attitude!

Twice the risk, four times the prize
Nothing knocks me over"
haha
heres the full quote
Milledge also said, “He’s got to face nine of the best hitters in the world” — though, based on their stats, that wouldn’t seem to include the Pirates. Their .237 team batting average is tied for the NL’s worst, even though they beat Phillies ace Roy Halladay (FSY) three weeks ago.

Pedro: 17 BB's, 24 K's in May
Anyone who bitches about that line is just looking for something to bitch about.
Dude has obviously refined his approach, he is hitting LHP better than RHP right now, and, besides 2 games in his last 20 games, his K’s have been really solid for a power-hitter.
Bottom-line: I think he addressed the FO’s questions and now is on track to be up in the first part of July.

I replied in the last thread, but here goes
I love that Pedro is in the system. I’m just a proponent of being ultra-conservative when it comes to prized prospects. Let them learn away from the vicious gaze of Bob Smizik and the rest of the yinzers. He’s been doing well for the past month or so, but “raking” is an overstatement. What is the rush?
I don't think it would be considered a rush ......
if you told the Bucs FO that Pedro would be a mid-season call-up in 2010 when they drafted him. In fact, I think they would say that he would be right on track.
Entering the season, they were planning on him being up around this time, maybe a bit later.
And, yes, batting .310 in May, and .400 or so in June, with a shit-load of XBH is indeed raking.

Insert Tabata and Pedro for Andy and Milledge once they arrive

you are going to have him bat twice.
Maybe one day well have FA to lose that are worth something

Another good pick, especially because it’s unprotected.
College baseball
Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling like NCAA baseball will be obsolete in 10 years? It seems like more and more every year, teams are taking high school players and more young players are making an impact.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
I find it interesting that HS players that get drafted in the MLB draft, then don’t make it to the bigs and thus never receive an education are not criticized, yet the NBA has been putting in age restrictions in their draft due to criticism.
It’s different in about every sport.
Football players have to play 3 years in college at a minimum. Hockey players often leave high school early to play for junior teams, then break into the NHL at 18-20 years old. Basketball is 1 year in college now. Baseball seems like anything goes.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
I don’t buy that indentured servitude playing for NCAA if you are good enough to make money is a great thing. Especially in football.
by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
No other sport does that. Baseball, soccer and hockey all allow players who are good enough to play professionally.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Yeah. Accredited BAs via online are not huge barrier at this point, so I’m not worried about the kids’ education since they at least have the opportunity if they want it via signing bonus.

Top five remaining...can any of them slip through the next 19 picks?
Castellanos (#14)
Allie (#15)
Workman (#20)
Wojciechowski (#21)
Tago (#22)
Good question
There seem to be some chance a few of those HS arms make it though…and once they make it through, they turn into overslot possibilities. Will be very interesting as teams now have ~14 hrs to think over their 2-30 rnd strategy.
I hate comp picks
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Possible picks over next 30.
Brentz
Castellanos

Brett Eibner
Tago

I’m high on Golden as well. Love to see him in the 3rd or later for us.
by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions
yep
Ranaudo, Golden? We would be blowing our budget in the first couple rounds…but then again, maybe this is the next “new Pirates strategy”: pick all quality and sort through who will sign and who won’t!
That’s an awful lot of talent left. We have options.
by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Is there any chance Castellanos lasts till the Pirates next pick?
It would be nice.
I would for Tago as well, IMO. Might get picked as I type this though or after I come back from a bathroom break now.

As long as Jacoby Jones is still available
I will be happy.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
I sure love Brentz...
..though I’m very doubtful he’ll make it through this sandwich round. How nuts would it be if the Pirates somehow signed Taillon and Ranaudo? I’d think we’d surge up a bunch of farm system ranks.
Just did, two picks in.
Brentz, Ranaudo, Jones, Castellanos still there..
Might not getting Harper be a blessing in disguise???
You figure the Buccos will be on the hook for 6 million or so, but the Nats will be on the hook for 8? 9 maybe? I’m really not sure how to evaluate Harper’s value. That money saved if one of those big guys falls to us in the 2nd round may be a nice consolation prize.
Thoughts anyone?
Fuck Boston!
I'm very happy with Taillon no.2
It would be great if some of these guys fell and we opened up the bank for them. Allie intrigues me
I called it a while ago.
A complete tragedy.
by Adam Reynolds on Jun 7, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I think there should be a slotted system for the comp round picks...
..after the top 10 in the 2nd round. Yes, the Angels had a tough time of it losing a bunch of guys through FA, but in all fairness, do the Nats, Pirates, Astros, and a bunch of other teams need these players more?
I guess this would be hard to negotiate with alot of teams, I just feel that the top 10 worst teams shouldn’t be hurt by “comp” picks.
How ridiculous is this Boston gets Ranaudo and Brentz in a comp round? Seriously..
I live in Boston
Everyday gives me a fresh reason to despise the Sox. From Remy’s arrogant BS to Papelbon’s meathead manson lamps.
Remy = Moron
He has to be about the worst announcer in MLB, and that includes Rob Dibble.
The other day he was talking about “Mahk Weitahs”.
If the top 10 pass on guys because of "signability" in the 2nd round, fine!
Let it go to the comp round, but I just feel with no trading of picks to move up, down, this system really benefits the rich. Maybe I’m overanalyzing this seeing Brentz and Ranaudo go to the 2nd evil empire..
I would like it...
The union would probably be willing to strike another World Series over the idea.
"Never mistake motion for action." - Ernest Hemingway
Often wondered
what would stop a team from making trades FOR salary dumps on guys they have no intention of signing just to get the picks.
Any possible comp picks for the Pirates for 2011?
Sooo everyone...
..would you rather have Brentz and Ranaudo or LaRoche, Morris, and Moss?
The latter.
Since that package also includes a couple million bucks that we won’t be using to sign Brentz/Ranaudo, and thus can use to add other tough signs this draft.
I'll take the latter
I’m pretty high on Morris being a front end starter
Vlad..
you taking Wilson if he’s there granted Castellanos goes before us?
Probably not.
If Tago’s there, I take Tago. If not, I look hard at Ficociello and a couple other arms (Petricka, Paxton, maybe Solis).
F#$% you Detroit
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
I doubt he will.
What with Texas, St. Louis and Detroit still pitcking….

I was just wondering that myself...
..I’d say no. Too much money. Same with AJ Cole.
It's kind of funny
makes me think of fantasy football drafting…do you take RB-QB or RB-RB or RB-WR? ;)
I would take
dump the fantasy league crap and get a life.

let Jacoby Jones be there at 52…

3rd round? I doubt that
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Jones, Allie, Cole, or Wilson
…one will be there a 52… not that we’ll take any. I’m guessing we go off the board.
Man I hope the Bucs can find some extra cash...
there’s gonna be a couple high upside guys waiting for us at #2
Left on the board, w/ STL and WAS picking ahead of us...
Allie (#15)
Workman (#20)
Eibner (#23)
Cole (#25)
Wilson (#28)
LaMarre (#31)
Bettis (#33)
Cabrera (#35)
Other notable:
Pitchers: Paxton, Petricka, Solis.
Position players: Gyorko, Cecchini, Kris Bryant, Ficociello, Golden.
All of those position players to some extent are solid options.

Allie
Get it done tomorrow.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
I'm pretty excited with our options
with the 2nd pick tomorrow. Great talent still available
Vlad and others – has Cole really looked that bad that he couldn’t be a budget buster for us next time if he just slips a little more?
If you assume
That Taillon will need 6 million minimum and they have around 10 mill, I can’t see them going for Cole.
I'd assume 7-7.5
I also read that we have about 11 million available but possibly more for the right players.
Really?
That’s a million more than Alvarez who was a much more “sure thing”. I think $6.5 gets it done…can’t believe they would have went with Taillon over Machado if they thought it would take that much.
Just looked it up
He got a 4.7 mil bonus, ML contract (!), bonuses and clauses could push total to 7 million…I would expect something like that, plus 10% to get Taillon
I still like him.
I’d be happy with him if he were the pick. But it all comes down to how much $ he wants.
I'm with you
But until our pick I’m doing to dream on Allie
Draftsite.com got Jacoby Jones coming to us in the 3rd round it there mock
that would be awesome
In BA's rankings...
…he’s #166. They say third-round tools, first-round price tag.
Other people probably like him more than that. That’s probably kind of his scouting floor.
Best Available.
Allie
Cole
Paxson
Workman
Wates
Brett Eibner
Gibbs
Dietrich
Cabrera
Smelter
J. Hahn
J. Grimm
Rasmussen
Plutko
Wilson
Aside from jacoby jones
who you guys have me pretty jacked for, are there any remaining high-end potential SS prospects, that are likely to stay at SS?
He's a secound round talent...
but most don’t think he’ll stick in the MIF. His bats pretty legit though. I wouldn’t be upset with the pick if we went over slot later. At this point though I’m kind of drooling over the possibility of Allie or Cole.
Again...
2010 PBC Draft Strategy isn’t in focus yet…could be they blow their budget on like 5-6 guys and then sign a few org guys.
be sweet to grab Stetson Allie
but theres alot of good players left i would take Jacoby Jones or Yordy Cabrera though get that SS since we took the arm
I forgot about Cabrera...
…that would be interesting.
I think ultimately we go with a college bat – Eibner if the Nats pass.
Well guys,
That was fun, hopefully we have more fun tomorrow.
Time to play some WoW before they shut down the server for an entire day.
Just googled John Van Benschoten
Didn’t realize he currently holds the all-time major league record for highest career ERA with at least 75 innings pitched!
From MLB Bonus Baby's mock draft, these first round picks are left...
Allie (#18)
Eibner (#26)
Wilson (#27)
Machado/Cole and possibly Machado/Allie might have been better than Taillon, especially since I do doubt we will do 2 big-budget prep arms. But, the past is the past.
Especially with there not being a lot of eye-popping SS left at this point.
Taillon is talented, though. No doubt about it.
Taillon/Allie?
That would be CRAZY…but this FO does think out of the box.
Taillon/Wilson might be interesting as well.
Anyone want to hear something funny?
So a kid I went to high school with was angry that the Pirates took Taillon, something about Sean Burnett being the last prep arm they took. So I told him that Taillon had the highest upside, and had three plus pitches. He responded by telling me he’s getting hit this year, and I shouldn’t try to talk about baseball with him because he plays or is in the world of baseball or something (at some crappy small college FYI). So I responded by saying he has been hit, but not all that hard, and it’s due to his tendency to tip a few pitches and leave his fastball up in the zone, both of which can be easily fixed. So I waited for a response and none came. So I went back to look at his status to find he had unfriended me. I don’t know if it was because I took offense to the fact that he knew more than me cause he’s a (not very good) player, or just over the petty argument that taking the number 2 talent at number 2 could possibly be a good thing, but I thought it was amusing.

Round 1, First-Year Player Draft, Secaucus, N.J.
June 8, noon ET
Rounds 2-30, First-Year Player Draft
June 9, noon ET
Rounds 31-50, First-Year Player Draft
Wouldn't it be lovely
To have Aki’s paycheck to throw at this draft? Different budgets, we all know, but just sayin’…
I know I'm a bit of an Auburn homer...
but the Pirates should seriously consider 1B Hunter Morris tomorrow. First base is a clear position of weakness right now with no definite answer there long term (assuming Pedro doesn’t move across the diamond). Morris has all kind of power from the left side and could wear out the short porch in right field at PNC Park. I think he’d be a great pick.
I read his scouting report and I agree with you.
I wouldn’t be upset if we got him at 2-2 and if we got him at 3-2 (after drafting one of the HS guys that fell) then I’d be ECSTATIC!
by houksyndrome on Jun 8, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm down with this
I think we take best hitter without huge price concerns in round 2 and then look for a few over slot, high upside guys later in the draft with the intention of signing 2-3. It will look like the Pedro draft but flip Alvarez and Scheppers.
I hope your right with the players left on the board
theres no reason the buccos cant grab a stud today with there 2nd pick
SBNation should pay us for reading through all the comments.
Thanks to most of the posters for all the info.
