Seriously, what's going on with Jose Bautista!?
I keep telling myself the year he's having is fluky, and he's gonna get ice cold and slump any day now...But after spotting him on the ESPN ticker tonight with a 2 HR game bringing his season total to 30 already, I have to say enough is enough! I'm pleading ignorance because I haven't watched him play at all this season, but anybody that has, can you tell me what he's doing differently? I don't blame the Pirates for giving him up when they did...There was absolutely no reason to think he was going to do what he's doing now. And for a couple years after we traded him, he was doing about as mediocre as he was with the Bucs. What happened, why is he all of a sudden mashing the dejesus of the ball?It can't be for real, he couldn't of just "figured it out"...This is a fluke, right?
Or is it?

THINK ROB DEER, SON
HE’S MERELY SWING FROM HIS HEELS.
HIS AVERAGE SUCKS AND HE WHIFFS WAY TO OFTEN. PLUS ADD IN THAT IT’S A CONTRACT YEAR.
That doesn't really explain why he is suddenly good...
Bautista is suddenly pulling an Adam Dunn when he’s been nothing like this in his career. Lots of guys try to “swing from the heels” but that doesn’t mean they could put up 30+ homers in the majors. He’s on pace to break 50 homers, something even Dunn has trouble with while batting .240.
The “contract year” point is moot because he’s been a non-tender candidate for the past couple years, essentially making every year for him a contract year.
what are you talking about
Jones and Alvarez are both projected to strikeout more than Bautista.Josh Hmilton has just about as many stikouts as he does.Joey Votto also.his oba is good and his slg. is good.he is just having his career year, accept it.
Well, I would make an
off-hand, joking comment about HGH here, but see last night’s thread. Personally, I think that Joey Bats has participated in secret medical experiments run by the Canadian military-medical-industrial complex, but hey, that’s just me….
I’ve watched/listened to a few Blue Jays games this year when the Pirates aren’t on – his explanation is that their coaching staff told him to approach at-bats aggressively and attack the pitches rather than defending the plate. Supposedly, that’s all there is to it.
Why don't you knock it off with them negative vibes?!
There was an expose
of a similar U.S. program in season 4 or 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. People think its fiction, but by releasing some facts in a show like that, the Tri-lateral commission helps innoculate the US masses against their coming world takeover. You have to believe, man. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE!!!
Why don't you knock it off with them negative vibes?!
Seriously?
A Weapon Plus Program and a BTVS reference in the same thread?
And Weapon Joey Bats is completely inaccurate; he would be known as Weapon XVII, if my count is right.
Bunch of damn geeks.

Seriously.
Buffy had a good season far more recently than the Bucs.
Honestly, I have no idea where this is coming from.
But my fantasy team is reaping the benefits! Joey Bats continues to mash the ball, and like you, I was sure he would go cold at some point (and I was waiting for that to happen so I could drop him from my fantasy team). This unexplained power surge that seemed to come form nowhere reeks of ’roid usage, or something. But who knows. Maybe the guy just made some simple adjustments like being “more aggressive” in his at bats.
ha!
I’m more of a Freddie Hubbard/Clifford Brown guy myself but I like Randy…nice to see some other jazz fans on BD!

There’s too much below-average data on his resume to believe this is a new plateau, instead of a career year.
As with Garrett Jones last year, this isn’t a fluke because he is hitting solid home runs. They’re not all bouncing off of Jose Canseco’s head and into the stands. But he won’t sustain this kind of hitting into next season. He’ll be back to a 15-20 HR hitter with low BA/OBP in 2011.
From Jason Grey's may 24th ESPN Insider Blog re: Bautista
" After watching Bautista for three games this weekend, I absolutely agree that the changes he and hitting coach Dwayne Murphy have implemented are the major factor in his power outburst. In past seasons, his swing was a bit defensive and out of control a large portion of the time. However, getting an earlier load, making a slight change in hand positioning, and — according to Bautista — picking up the consistent playing time that he hadn’t necessarily gotten as a part-time player the past two seasons, have all contributed to a breakout campaign thus far. "
I remember an article that he said he retooled his swing several times. mechanically he was all messed up. he simplified and found a nice stroke but didn’t get his timing correct until last summer. since then he’s been driving the ball with authority…
if nutting weren’t so cheap, we’d have kept buatista and had all his awesome production… (I’m kidding)
That's interesting to know.
The numbers bear that out. After hitting .200 in June, .220 in July and .167 in August last year, Jose went on a tear in Sept/Oct, hitting .257/.339/.606 with 10 (!) homers. Whatever it is he figured out, he did it Sept. 1, 2009, not April 1, 2010.
Aha
I had missed that. I’d say that about doubles the odds that this is a (semi-)real change. Like GFJones, he won’t likely continue at quite this pace, but he may have permanently become a 25-30 HR guy, which would be reasonably valuable.
Especially if they could fix his glove.
