Rosenthal: Pirates Trade Octavio Dotel To Dodgers
Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Pirates have traded Octavio Dotel to the Dodgers for James McDonald and someone named "Lamb." (I think he means OF Andrew Lambo.)
Absent any context, this is another fine move. McDonald can help in the rotation soon and Lambo is only 22 and has some upside. He was once regarded as one of the organization's top prospects, but his stock has slipped a bit since flatlining at Class AA and getting suspended for drug use. But he's still only 21, and he skipped a level to get to Class AA in the first place. If Neil Walker can put together a career after struggling in the high minors, Lambo can too, especially given that he's younger than Walker and his struggles have arguably been less severe.

In 2009 Minor league Ball
McDonald # 1 Prospect and Lambo # 4
Yet another...
Neil Huntington trade for prospects who were once really good prospects but whose shine has worn off. Eventually one of these HAS to pan out, right?
Agreed
But with Neal’s luck of late they’ll both join the Peace Corps.
just to tone it down
he s not super or anything, but Bowker and Martinez are both great pickups for Javier Lopez
did we really get Bowker?
I thought it was Lopez-Martinez straight up

Cha-ching!!
Just saw this on MLB network and those were the only words that popped in my head. It’s not like McDonald is a sure-thing ace, but he’s right up there with any pitching prospect we have.
I love it
I can’t think of any way that this turns out bad, and has the potential to be a huge coup. Gotta love dealing with Ned Colletti.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
I'm not one for hyperbole . . .
and I gotta say that we may look back on the 2010 trade deadline as a time that moved the franchise much closer to being competitive.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
WOW...
I really thought we’d have to give up a starter for prospects with McDonald and Lambo’s upside. I really hope it is Lambo and not some 34 year old AAAA lifer actually named Lamb.

Giving the Bucs credit for getting Lambo in the Dotel deal.
DK reporting Pirates sending 500K to the Dodgers.
Seriously ...
that’s like DL saying, “Solid, move. I would have done it.”
Here:
Pirates trade away their closer for two guys I never heard of. Clearly a Salary Dump! Bad Deal Neal strikes again.

Dotel will now go from
The guy Smize thinks can’t hold Capps’ jock strap to the Pirates’ beloved closer.

No. But he seems to conveniently forget that we actually got someone to replace Capps when we got Dotel.

Smizik ...
outdid himself with his idiotic column on how the Matt Capps’ nontender made the organization look terrible.
I didn’t like the move. I would have offered him arbitration.
But the bottom line, I think, is that NH got back similar value. He may have even done better.
Lambo
He didn’t get suspended for PED’s, he got suspended for “a drug of abuse” , which probably means marijuana.
Take this with a grain of salt
But I’ve read in numerous places that the kid loves to smoke. Hopefully the suspension was a reality check b/c he has boatloads of talent.

it worked for Thrilledge
Hopefully it works for Lambo
He’s legit!

Well...
The 79 Pirates won a World Series with their mascot handing out cocaine. Marijuana is no biggie.

Why does everyone think we have to great prospects. It’s not like we have a Mark Teixiera on our team and we can get Andrus, Feliz, Harrison and Saltalamacchia. Huntington is doing the best with what he has. This organization is better than it’s ever been. If McDonald and lets say Morton can pitch to their capability then Ohlendorf, Duke and Maholm can pitch as the # 3,4 and 5 starters which is what they are. Plus they would still have Lincoln, Morris, Owens, McCutchen, Veal, Ascanio, Aguero, Hart and hopefully Taillon and Allie in a coupe of seasons.
it's a good day
However as a resident contrarian, I have to disagree with “the organization is better than it’s ever been”. I don’t think this needs much explanation.
Ok. Its better than its been in a while with Cutch, Alvarez, Tabata and Walker. Hopefully Taillon and Allie will be in the system soon.
Well,
If by “ever”, you mean in the last 10 years.

How about the last 17 going on 18 years. In my opinion there is something to look forward to with this team
Yes, no doubt. Obviously, there looked like there was a decent team and system developing in the mi-late 90s, but it never materialized.

That’s how long we’ve been losing. Am I the only one excited about Cutch, Alvarez, Walker and Tabata. Possibly Taillon and Allie. Huntington best move was not trading Hanrahan and Meek unless he got something great in return. I heard the Rangers asked for Hanrahan and Huntington asked for Feliz and the Rangers said no to that. Getting Feliz for Hanrahan would’ve been robbery if they could’ve got it done.
Let me be more specific again. This franchise is in a better position than it’s been in the last 17-18 years You know the losing streak started in 1993. To be fair the last time this team was I was 2. So I don’t remember the quote un quote glory years of this team.
Am I the only one giddy over getting Bowker?

Probably.
I never heard of the guy before.

Bowker ...
is this year’s Clement. Interesting. Older. Unlikely he’ll ever start.
Anyone have a good player profile for him?
For the life of me, I can’t find anything.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
Bowker
AAAA slugger. 27 Y/O, might still make something of himself but it’s a longshot. Worth it to take a flyer on a guy like this if all your’re giving up is a LOOGY.
Try to find some video
… of Bowker’s swing. He has tons of power. “River Power”! He might remind you of Bonds’ swing but, Bowker always gets pitched away. I think he could combine better plate discipline with that power if he would just wait for his pitch. The Giants system often produces players with good eyes. We’ll see if he’ll suddenly pop into his prime.

Somewhere up this thread
I went giddy already… He isn’t great but he might be v decent! I did think the giants were screwing with him

For whatever it's worth
Keith Law’s twitter:
@aarontagg I’d rather have Lambo/ McDonald than Wallach/Smit.
That was in reply to someone asking “Lambo and McDonald for Dotel that has to be the worst deal of the deadline right?”
Just about to say it
Considering we got Snyder, I’d have to say yes.

Lambo
Lambo, depite the makeup issues, is a pretty good prospect. He was hitting .342/.390/.566 before the suspension. Not a great athlete, seems a little stiff. But he’s got strong wrists/forearms.
He certainly has tools
And a good pedigree. Performance in AA the last 2 years has been sub-par but he’s still young. He and McDonald are a very good return on Dotel, IMO.
Dodgers turn to McDonald
to paraphrase from DodgerbulueLa.com
The Dodgers brought McDonald up this year to be the their starter and last year he pitched well in the bullpen, even though last season he also pitched in 4 games of which he pitched a total of 13 1/3 innings in April of 2009, and gave up 28 baserunners and 13 runs.
This year, he has missed time with a pair of stints on the disabled list. McDonald was 6-1 with a 4.41 ERA and 3.91 FIP in the Pacific Coast League. Now was to be his time for the Dodgers. He was the 2007 and 2008 minor league pitcher of the year.
Thus, is he a starter or reliever and did we get damaged goods?
McDonald is an absolute steal!
I was positive the only way we’d acquire him is through some Paul Maholm for McDonald and prospects kind of move.
The guy is still only 25 years old, has a solid track record in the minors of missing bats, pretty huge guy at 6’5, and should be around for a very long time. I don’t see how ANYONE can complain about this return.
Taking organizational need into consideration, I’m probably taking McDonald and Lambo over Ramos.
Correct me if I'm wrong
But Albuquerque is a tough environment for pitchers, isn’t it?
I think there's at least an argument . . .
that not only did we take steps towards a better future today, but that we are not any worse, or perhaps even better, currently. I mean, we gave up our 3rd, 4th and 5th best bullpen options, a replacement level bench player and a sub-replacement level bench player and we stabalized our catching situation adn added at least one pitcher who will entre the starting rotation immediately.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
According to DK
MacDonald is coming to Pittsburgh, Martinez and Bowker to Indy, Lambo to Altoona.
