Pirates agree to sign international talent!
Dejan Kovacevik is reporting that the Pirates have signed six international player. Looks like the Dominican Academy is starting to bear some fruit as all of these players are from the Dominican Republic.
For those of you without PG plus there are some interesting players in this mix though none are expected to be any of the big bonus babies. The players signed are:
Yunior Montero, 6' 4" RH pitcher - very projectable, good fastball movement
Christian Henriquez - 6' 1" LH pitcher - very polished
Miguel De Aza - 6' 0" LH OF -
Rodney Polonia - 5' 10" LF SS and son of Luis Polonia
Yunior Valdez - 6' 3" RH OF - athletic and toolsy
Melvin Rosario - 6' 2" LH pitcher - another projectable frame
These are just agreements as none of these players have been cleared to sign contracts yet. While waiting for some of our important draft prospects to sign I'm least glad to hear that we are getting some interesting international talet in the system.

Couldn't find much on these guys
Except that De Aza is a guy the Bucs reportedly had a deal with back in May for $150K. Also, Rodney Polonia is Luis Polonia’s son.
For some perspective a 150K bonus is pretty good. That means the Bucs value this kid. I have heard from a former scout that 25K or less is very common. As a caveat I’m not an expert on this.
Yinzers uber alles
Yeah, six figures is a big deal.
A $150k bonus is basically slot money for a fifth-round pick. You don’t make that kind of commitment without liking a kid.
it is nice to sign these players but
they have to get the big fish,
Lis Heredia
The big fish are nice as well, but the team needs to cast a wide net. The only mega-bonus baby to make much of an impact so far is Miguel Cabrera, although Wily Mo Pena had a career as well.

Julio Teheran...
is looking like he is going to do something. Heredia is not unlike Teheran was coming out of Latin America.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!

not sure if you read this article and were referring to it… but he’s right.
Take a look per bucsp.com
Still, we need to make an attempt for Heredia.

I don't know if there's any analysis out there
But it would seem that, due to the age of the kids being signed, there’s going to be greater uncertainty in the Latin American market, and it would seem to make sense for a team to cast a wider net with international signings than they would in the draft.
I think this is probably correct.
There’s a big difference between projecting a 16-year-old and projecting an 18-year-old.
I remember reading a thing with one of the Dodgers’ front office guys, where he temporarily had a high-profile 16-year-old Latin signee staying with him in the US. He came home from work one day, and saw the prospect rolling around on the lawn with his son and the family dog and it made his blood run cold, because it drove home the point of how young and immature this kid on whom they’d just gambled more than a million dollars really was.
