Steve Pearce Out For A Month

The Post-Gazette reports that he'll get an injection in his ailing knee tomorrow, and will need to sit for a while. It's a shame; the offense can really use his bat.

Why?

Pearce was active, and thus presumably healthy when the comment was made.

So you don't think they knew...

…that his knee was hurting him while he was trying to play through it in the minors?

I don't know

Players aren’t always 100% truthful when it comes to pain. A guy in Pearce’s position? Heh, I’d be shocked if Pearce revealed anything until he simply couldn’t take the pain any more.

I’m making the assumption that CabreraKilledMyChildhood is referring to Charlie’s comment in his June 27 post regarding Alex Presley hitting for the cycle.

…Steve Pearce (why isn’t he back in the big leagues yet?), Brian Myrow, Jeff Clement and Brandon Moss also homered

Well, as of June 27, he was playing in every game, including at 3B, for Indy. He even stole two bases in the three games after that before he was removed from the lineup. It was a fair comment, and no retraction is in order.

He was hurt, azibuck.....

It has been something that NH has stated was bothering him for a long time.

It wasn’t some new injury after July 27th.

This blog is seemingly more and more 2nd guessing every decision that is made by the FO, which is fine. However, when more and more facts are revealed, a retraction of the 2nd guessing as it relates to Pearce is in order.

It seems like a valid point by Charlie based on what we knew at the time. I know many of us were thinking the same thing.

Hardly an inflammatory comment by Charlie anyhow.

I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

Not inflammatory at all.....

Just a comment that was made without all the facts.

Once the facts are known, a retraction is in order.

He was playing at the time. Give me a break.

It wasn't a comment, it was a question

Perhaps this answers it. If so, all of us who thought to ask the question can say “thanks”. Question → answer. When my son asks if the Pirates are winning, he doesn’t retract the question after I give him the answer, regardless of the answer.

You're just proving my point

If it was bothering him for a long time, it could have bothered him in the bigs just as easy as the smalls. Chronic knee pain afflicts probably hundreds of ballplayers, even young ones.

You don’t even know that this IS the reason he wasn’t in the bigs. It could have been some other cockamamie reason.

Its OK with me

Steve Pearce to me was always just too big a guy to play middle infield and too small for the corners. He played first like a 2nd baseman, spastic and running all over the place. Could only manage singles mostly at major league level. So we don’t really have a place for him now – GI Jones at first is perfect prototype of power, tall rangy lefty at first is what is needed, espeically with Pedro and Neil new on the infield. No room for him in outfield. So DL is just as good a place as any for Pearce who has no trade value.

"played first like a 2nd baseman"

When that’s used as a descriptor, it’s almost always a positive thing. Since the average second baseman has more range than the average first baseman, y’know? Why do you try to make it sound like a bad thing in this context?

And for Jones to be a “perfect prototype”, he’d need to be a plus hitter, instead of just average-ish.

reply

What I mean is he overplays the position with extended range, running down balls to the right when he should stay put. Secondly, he doesn’t have the extended arm range that GI Jones has to get offline throws, nor the ability to pick balls out of the dirt. Pearce = Doumit at first base in terms of catching throws.

Sorry, calling B.S. on this one.

Pearce has displayed a pretty good glove at first in the bigs when he has been given the opportunity. I think the thing that has been holding him back is his offense at this level. To equate Pearce to Doumit defensively at first is ridiculous. I would rather have Pearce at first with his good leg and a wooden peg than Doumit.

Sorry, we're just going to have to disagree.

That description doesn’t sound anything like the Steve Pearce I’ve seen on defense.

For those bashing the FO handling of calling Pedro up......

Read Coonely’s chat. They had made the decision 4 days prior to his call up that he was ready.

Not every decision has to be communicated to the press, especially in PGH, where the press often knows less and searches less than even the casual fan.
