Why are the Bucs Hitting/Scoring So Bad?


At the end of this MLB article it says "The Pirates entered Thursday ranked last in the National League in home runs (53), runs scored (272) and team batting average (.237)."

Stats reflect what the team did, but I can't figure out why they can't score more runs. Looknig at MLB team batting stats, I see the following:

-26th in walks (only 4 worse)

-9th in SO (only 8 worse)

-29th in Total Bases

-28th in SLG

-28th in OBA

All of the above shows what they did (or sometimes did not do). But why can't they hit? Is it just due to being so young (see this post)? Is it due to lack of talent?
