Look over at baseballcrank at his analysis of High Quality Starts. This is when a SP goes at least 7 innings and gives up 2 runs (earned or unearned) or less. An interesting list.
Bob Veale (one of my favorite Pirates) is #9 on this list making a HQS 43.5% of the time he started a game. This beat out many HOFs such as Dizzy Dean, Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan, etc. It was as good as Roger Clemens!
Other Pirates are Doug Drabek at 35.7%, Bob Friend 34.8%, Dock Ellis 33.8%, Jerry Reuss 32.5%, Rick Rhoden 32.1%, Vern Law 31.9%, John Candelaria 31.2%,
Two present day pitchers are high on the list: Johan Santana and Roy Halladay.
I wonder who the next Pirate SP will be to equal Bob Veale? Or even Doug Drabek?
