Ladies and gentlemen, how DOES he do it?

My last five games at PNC Park:

Star-divide

Pirates 6, Cardinals 5 (win with two runs in the bottom of the ninth)

Pirates 11, Dodgers 1 (Andy LaRoche 5-5, 13 total bases; the Duke 8 2/3 game)

Pirates 11, Dodgers 5 (opening day 2010)

Pirates 12, Astros 6 (The Gathering)

*

Pirates 7, Marlins 1

*--This is where a 4-0 loss to the Reds would have gone if I hadn't had to attend my father-in-law's funeral. Thanks, Pap!

Maybe Next Year,

We need to get the #1 pick.

Nice work! I saw a loss in the first home game that I attended this year (a Saturday night game with ATL), then six straight victories, then a Sunday-afternoon loss to the Rockies. Of course, I did see three road losses during that time: two in Cincy and one in Detroit.

Bucdaddy, cool story,

but I will point out that; on the drive to the gathering, my buddy Tom/designated driver, informed me that since the construction of PNC Park, he had NEVER, been there for a Pirates win. (We are talking about 20-25 games at that point). He then also tells me about how he was given tickets to the Sunday game (so he could take his grand-daughter); and he goes off about how he just wants to see them win.

Well, those of us who where there that weekend know that our Bucs won both of those games.

Things, they are and will be changing for the better.

and….. If the d-bagging trolls just aren’t smart enough to understand, then we should all just pity their parents; and hope/pray/whatever for impotency.

Paul.

PS…. I should add that the Gathering, was awesome, and if we can/will do it again, I will be there.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread bucdaddy...

but I was bored and headed over to fishstripes.com, the Marlins SBNation blog, and that place is a ghost town. They’ve had exactly 2 posts all year that reached triple digits in the comments. It’s crazy to realize that some teams/organizations draw such little interest from their fanbases even though they are arguably in better shape than a ‘’ bottom dwelling franchise’’ like ours. Especially at the ML level.

I had such big plans on making it to more games this year. I’ve had one bad thing after another happen to me here of late but still managed to keep up on everthing going on with the PBC. In games I did manage to make it to this year I’m 5-2. Hopefully we’ll have some of our interesting pitching prospects debuting in the second half of next year, and our young hitters keep progressing, and we can have a way more interesting MLB team at this time next year!

that makes me appreciate BD even more

As a diehard Bucco fan living in the land of the Yanks and Mets, Bucs Dugout is a godsend. I’d go totally stir-crazy for meaningful baseball talk if it wasn’t for the awesome community here.

^^^^

This.

I also recognize the karma boomerang I’ve unleashed on myself by posting this, but … what the hell, what’s the point of having a run of good luck if you don’t tell anyone about it?

something with the Padres too

I dont know if they collapsed it in their gamethread, but they didnt have a draft thread up, when I went to check on what was going on wtih Whitson… very strange for a fairly active community…

I think it was John Sickels...

Who said he posted a Padres minor league review, or draft review, on their SBN blog and didn’t recieve one comment. He also raved about how great Pirates fans are because we had hundreds of comments on the one he posted here.

Maybe it has something to do with how nice the Miami and San Diego areas are. The nerds there aren’t interested in watching baseball during summer like us. They can just go to a beach and watch all of the hot chicks in skimpy bikinis instead….

Well that only says

that it’s a good thing that PA is landlocked.

(It is, right? My impression is it’s somewhere on the eastern central part of USA…)

The Marlins

They have such a poor fanbase. I would think that a team like them (won 2 WS in last 15 years, have one of the MLB’s best position players and pitchers, Hanley and JJ) would draw more than 10,000 per game, but they struggle with that. It’s not like they are playing in Alaska, and fans have to travel 50 miles to the stadium, they play in Miami. Miami is the 4th largest city in America.

If the MLB decides to relocate a few teams, or just terminate them, the Marlins will be first on the list. I just wish the people in Miami knew that.

that's interesting to me

I’ve heard for years about the Marlins’ apathetic fanbase, but never heard a good explanation.

Can anyone with Miami connections or knowledge shed any light on that?

Just painting with a broad brush, you’d think that playing in a huge city, having recent success, and some promising young players, like H2O pointed out, would be enough. But I’m also surprised because baseball is huge in Cuba, and Miami has the largest Cuban population in the country, right?

Plus, baseball is generally most popular in places where it can be played year-round. So what happened with Florida? Is it just losing out to football?
