Bucs sign Heredia

The Pirates early this morning agreed to terms with 16-year-old pitching prospect Luis Heredia of Mexico on a $2.6 million bonus, the biggest payout in franchise history for an international amateur.

http://plus.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports-town/pbc-blog/104391-pirates-wrap-up-heredia

Wow. I honestly didn't believe we would actually do it. He got less than I imagined he would. We got him for 2.6 mil which is probably a bargain.

sweet

This has been an awesome week to be a Pirate fan.

yeah, the Blue Jays...

… had offered more than that amount. apparently Heredia really liked our scout and wanted to play for the Pirates. The kid is just going to get stronger and stronger; awesome sign… SANO WHO??? lolol

by white angus on Aug 19, 2010 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

Important to remember

That the kid gets to pick, but the team gets 3/4 of the amount. So if they offered 100k more, they were really only offering Heredia himself 25k more. So it might not have been enough to choose the team he didnt really like, even if it seems like a lot more money at first

Sorry
Several other Major League Baseball teams had pursued Heredia, but the Pirates long ago established a firm relationship with the player, his family and the Veracruz officials who had the final say.

Could anyone here speak to Mexico’s reputation producing pitchers?

Seems like I need to contain my enthusiasm until he actually pans out.

There was this Fernando guy back in the 80’s…and Yovani Gallardo is pretty good.

Jaime Garcia and Joakim Soria are no slouches either.

Not as badly as Omar Minaya wants to.

Loux

That would be beyond awesome.

What we really need . . .

Is to sign either or both of two Lat. Am. hitters the Pirates are supposedly interested in—Rougned Odor (that’s really the name) and Elvis Sanchez.

by WTM on Aug 19, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

are either of them

a SS? id love to get a quality latin american SS in the system

by C Shint on Aug 19, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

ah nvm

i see Odor is a SS while Sanchez is 3B

by C Shint on Aug 19, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's throw in another

pitcher in the 2nd round who’s close to ML ready?

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

Or another Allie

who will need well above slot money to sign. Someone like Archie Bradley!

either would be great

if everything previous happened with the 2 latin bats, loux, rendon, and bradley. Everyone on this site’s head would probably explode.

by hilltoppeer on Aug 19, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course Smizik...

would find a way to downplay it. Nutting is CHEAP!

apparently its not that hard

if you’ve seen the kind of craziness people are indulging on the other Heredia thread, clearly, if you want to do it, it’s easy enough!

Rougned Odor?

im not convinced about him. something about his is “fishy”.

by white angus on Aug 19, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea...

Unless he is Dominican. I am no racist(I am hispanic myself) but me and my father always talk about how Dominicans have funny names. Depending on the part of the island they come from they could be named anything.

Nevermind...

it seems fake then. lol There is still a chance it is real, but if that is the case I feel bad for him when he comes over to the US.

BA has scouting reports on these two guys in the subscriber area. In deference to the rules here about excerpting, BA describes Odor as having the best swing in Venezuela. They say he’s not just a BP guy but shows an advanced approach in games. He’s listed at 5’10", 155, but he’s only 15. Probably will move to 2B.

Sanchez is Dominican and BA says he’s “one of the best power hitters in Latin America.”

Are we talking about Loux (I can never follow these indented posts)…If so I believe the answer was “frayed labrum”. I have also read Tommy John possibly, although I don’t think that is accurate. Rumors are he’ll be throwing for teams in September.
