Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Today, the 2010 Arizona Fall League teams rosters were announced at MiLB.com. The Pirate minor league position players participating are Andrew Lambo, Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison, and Tony Sanchez.

Discuss.

EDIT: Per DK, three pitchers will also be selected. I'd guess they'd be guys who missed time this year, and could use some extra innings. Colton Cain, perhaps? Trent Stevenson? Is it possible that Taillon goes also?

UPDATE by Charlie: I think Cain, Stevenson and especially Taillon are all very unlikely - usually AFL picks have a little more experience than those guys. I bet Brett Lorin will be there, though.

Lorin makes sense.

It’s interesting that they picked two middle infielders, and D’Arnaud wasn’t one of them. Wonder whether they’re considering Mercer for the 40-man, or whether they picked him because he’s unlikely to attract Rule 5-type attention.

Curious whether they’ll take McPherson as one of the arms (if they think he’s a lock for the roster) or whether they’ll leave him at home (if they’re not planning to roster him, and are worried about showcasing him in front of scouts).

is there a rule on pitchers?

I think I read somewhere that the teams can send only one hitter below the AA level, which is Tony Sanchez in this case…

is there a corresponding rule for pitchers? Or does the above rule apply for all players and not hitters?

I think the rule includes pitchers...

and you can only send one A ball player and one international player if that player’s country of origin does not have a fall? (maybe winter) league. Anyway, with Sanchez being the A ball player I expect the pitchers to be AA or AAA. Ascanio may be one if he is ready to pitch. Alderson may be another as element1286 pointed out. What about Crotta or Hughes, they are both fringe prospects and are close to have to being added (I know Crotta has to, not sure about Hughes).

Hughes is Rule 5 eligible.

Tim Alderson?

Innings shouldn’t be a concern, and he needs the work.
