Here we D'oh again!

Doumit let the fat fly drop in front of him in right field on Slim Mac’s last start, let’s hope nothing gets hit to right field.

And let’s hope if Slim Mac is done that JR will take him out and not hang him out to dry like last start…

I hope he does, because there is nothing more entertaining than watching you complain.

hey cocktails

i saw later that you set up a torrent feed for the game the other day! Sorry I wasn’t around then, and thanks for doing it!

Nice

McDonald’s FIP and xFIP are better than I thought they would be. 2.55 and 3.57 respectively coming in to this game.

SSS but still.

Lefty pitcher.

Rocco touched on Bowker having a lower OPS against LHP.

by RDV across the sea on Sep 1, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, Dohmit from right side doesn’t do much, should have been Milledge or Bowker.

its stupid anyway

but i didnt know it was this stupid!

by BurgherKing on Sep 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyone watching this game?

I see GameTracker says both of the first outs were flyouts to “deep” outfield… either one close to going over the fence

by pittbluedevil on Sep 1, 2010 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Tabata’s went to the warning track. McCutchen’s was really high, and got knocked down before it reached the track.

by poorboywilly on Sep 1, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Radio said they were both hit hard.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

they both would have been gone last night

by pghkillers on Sep 1, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Cutch's was just at the warning track

And Tabs was a far back as you could get without going over.

Pete...

watching strike 3 down the middle?

by pittbluedevil on Sep 1, 2010 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

called strike 3 is just maddening.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

That 2-1 pitch was the definition of a hanging breaking ball. Gozelanny couldn’t have been happy with the location he left that one in. Really dodge a bullet there.

by ElDuce on Sep 1, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Pedro

expecting a breaking ball in the dirt on a full count…no swing.

by RDV across the sea on Sep 1, 2010 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Dude needs a different approach/grip/swing with 2 strikes – but Don Long will never tell him…

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Just looked at the splits. Out of 148 plate appearances with 2 strikes, Pedro has struck out 91 times. That’s 61%

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

That’s a good start for Skinny Mac.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

Gi Jones! Saves alot of bad throws

I’m not down on him at all, not on defense and not on offense either. If anyone else was hitting he would be considered just fine.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

He’d be considered just fine if he were hitting.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

highest HRs and RBIs on the team!

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Which kind of disproves your point

He leads the team in RBI because the only guys hitting right now are the ones hitting in front of him in the order.

by biggyv on Sep 1, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

You know as well as I do that leading this team in any offensive category is meaningless. He’s been useless aside from the occasional HR. .247/.307/.418 from a first baseman is well below replacement.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Just noticed Garrett Jones is leading the team in grounding into double plays.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

But he also has no protection behind him.

I’m just saying he makes plays on defense, a scooping machine, and is a legit power threat.

Anyway, what do you recommend for 1st Base? D’ohmit? Just leave the base open?

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Doumit has at least been league average with the bat, but he’d probably give a ton of runs back in the field. Bowker should be at least replacement level, and he’s played better than that in AAAA.

I’m not saying we should replace Jones immediately, but he’s been bad for longer than he was good last year.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He's struggled since the break

.272/.337./.431 before the break, which is somewhat acceptable given the lack of viable options.

by biggyv on Sep 1, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones had a 523 OPS in August. That’s worse than Iwamura put up before he was run out of town.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

WGN guy just said “Cedeno ambushing the Cubs in this series”…that hit makes him 3/9 so far. Total ambush. I guess for Cedeno’s numbers that is an ambush.

by poorboywilly on Sep 1, 2010 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

He was truly, deeply awful as a Cub

At least, after his first 40 games. He wOBA’d around .260 twice. I think he really scarred the fans.

He was even worse with the Mariners, wasn’t he?

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Bad pitch from McDonald to Hill there, especially with the pitcher on deck. Changeup thrown about 2 feet higher than you ever want to.

Oh jeez. Poor Gorzy.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

For those of you who can’t see, Tabata hit a line drive right up the middle that was heading for his face. Luckily he stopped it with his left hand, but that looks like it could have broken something.

wtf these WGN guys are ridiculous. They’re talking about how pitchers run around the field all the time before the start, but running on the bases “with cleats, making turns, watching coaches” is soooo much different, and likely to sap all the pitcher’s strength.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Well then. Big spot for Bowker’s first Pirate AB.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Right.

DY would’ve been a nice choice

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Bowker is a much better hitter than DY.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Bowker

wears 23…….Lloyd McClendon……….who else?

by Chucksberries on Sep 1, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

Oh my God. What a BS call.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Another called third strike.

Bowker's first AB

….stinging some foul balls, looks like he got hosed on strile three

by cocktailsfor2 on Sep 1, 2010 4:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I thought Bowker handled bat well

but got a bad call. However, I don’t think that dude is 6’2" as advertised. Looks about 5’11" perhaps.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

He looks taller in this picture, but looked a little short in the box. Maybe it’s the way he stands.

by ElDuce on Sep 1, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s standing on tip toes there. Maybe he’s 6 feet, but not 6’2".

I think Jason Kendall was always listed at 6 feet, but once I stood next to him and he was shorter than me and I’m 5’11".

just in time, we need some fat, flat down the upper middle of the plate fastballs with no movement…

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

2 out double for Walker!

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Luckily we have Garrett Jones ready to drive in the run off a lefty!

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

Is that the third lefty the Cubs brought out of the pen today?

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

D’oh! I’m thinking of the starter, Gorzy

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

They do have 3 in the pen, though. At one point they had 4.

by ElDuce on Sep 1, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Jesus Christ, Jones. Why are you swinging at that crap?

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

i dont know if Bowker's ever played 1B

if he can, though, I’d have pinch hit for Jones there…

by BurgherKing on Sep 1, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bowker already PH for McDonald, so he’s out of the game

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

not an in-game suggestion… in this case, i was just pondering what could have been done in hindsight…

by BurgherKing on Sep 1, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Bowker’s primary position is 1B I think.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

At the major league level...

Bowker is worse than Jones vs LHP…and that takes some doing.

by Thunder on Sep 1, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

The “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” singers are some of the worst I’ve ever heard. This is Carl Lewis quality.

The Mr. T rendition is priceless as well. In addition to the horrible singing, he was decked out in stars & stripes because it was Memorial Day.

Which right handed bat would you put between them? Andy LaRoche?

by Chucksberries on Sep 1, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

before or after he misplays a ball in the outfield?

by Chucksberries on Sep 1, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

he doesn’t misplay usually, just gets there differently than you or I would…

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you suggesting he’s worse in the outfield than Doumit??

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you suggesting he’s head and shoulders above Doumit?

by Chucksberries on Sep 1, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, because he will go all out for any ball, and get to most.

D’ohmit will not even try to catch a ball he’s not sure he can get by walking over to it.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Against a lefty, my preferred lineup would be:

CF McCutchen
LF Tabata
2B Walker
3B Alvarez
RF Milledge
1B Jones
C Snyder
SS Cedeno

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

except might has well flip Milledge and Alvarez, let Lastings clean up, Pedro too big a Whiffer against lefties.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The point is to break up the lefties.

by gorillagogo on Sep 1, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones should not be cleanup. Probably not even fifth the way he’s hitting. Pedro cleanup, any of Doumit, Milledge, Snyder between the two.

considering we already blew our golden opportunity to tie/take lead, you may be right.

by poorboywilly on Sep 1, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

My bucket of baseballs trade, give us a bucket of balls and you can have:

D’ohmit
Clements
Ledezma
Heave Ho
Moss
Gallager
Burres
Bowker
and of course Aki

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, I forgot: Two buckets each for Maholm and Duke

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would you want to give away Bowker?

when we don’t even know what he’s capable of.

Some of the others are debatable, but that’s just dumb.

by Garrett122 on Sep 1, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Bowker’s done nothing for us except hit the snot out of the ball in AAA.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a bad feeling that he's a AAAA guy - the Giants figured it out and that's why they let him go

I think he’s a Clement clone.

And I think he’s shorter than he says, a 6 foot tall first baseman, career AAA guy.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if you intended this to be a joke but I think it’s hilarious :)

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Joke is on the Pirates who got 3 lefthanded AAAA clones:

Moss, Clements, Bowker

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

You went from Clements to Clement back to Clements.

Which is it gonna be, man!

by Schide on Sep 1, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

These guys we got in trades are all the same dude, so doesn’t matter…

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You can add LaRoche to the list, except he’s righthanded.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you not see the irony that Jones had basically an identical profile as Bowker until he got called up when the Pirates traded everyone else away?

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think GI Jones ever got an extended chance in the bigs

We’ve given extensive try outs to Moss, Clement(s), and LaRoche. Bowker had one with the Giants and I think he’s a shorter dude, looked like a AAA guy in that at bat to me.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I mostly agree with you on Moss and LaRoche. Clement had a short tryout but he was terrible, and he’s been mediocre in AAA so I’m not dying to give him another chance. But Bowker has been much better in AAA the last two years than Jones ever was, and he’s a year younger than Jones was when we called him up.

As for his AB today I must have been watching something different. He fouled off a number of tough pitches and then took a borderline slider for a called third strike. Much better than, say, any of Jones’ ABs today.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Bowker turns out to be better, but the Giants GAVE him away after they tried him out in the bigs. I think he’s a bench player at best, and we already have alot of those.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 1, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, he’s probably going to be a bench player, but his AAA stats suggest he has a higher ceiling than that. Hopefully the Giants just made a stupid move.

I smell a Brandon Moss…

Great PA for Cutch. Not so much for Tabata.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Well, that sucked, Tabata.

At least Marmol had to throw a ton of pitches. Maybe he’ll be gassed for the 9th.

by shayborg on Sep 1, 2010 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

Very close...

…but Jones managed not to.
