What's up with Nyjer??

If you haven't seen it, check out MLB.TV or ESPN for the brawl triggered by Nyjer. Has he forgotten that he's playing baseball, not hockey?  A quick summary....

Star-divide

A few days ago (I didn't notice it at the time) Nyjer throws a hard shoulder into the Cardinals catcher as he crosses home plate. He was kept out of the game the next day because his manager said "they're gonna' throw at him."

Sometime recently, he threw a ball into the crowd and got a warning or suspension.

A few days ago, he levelled the Marlins' catcher when he had room to slide safely.   Apparently, the rookie catcher is likely out for the season.  While not necessarily a dirty play, you have to wonder why he threw a shoulder into the catcher when he could have slud easily.

So, tonight he gets hit once or twice.  The Nats are down by a typical Bucs score - 14-3 or something.  Nyjer stills second, then stills third, going hard both times.

So the next at bat, Volstad throws a foot behind Nyjers butt, missing him. Nyjer gives a twirl of the bat, then sprints at Volstad and gets of a clean, clear punch.  Gaby Sanchez lays out Nyjer like Troy Polamalu decking a wide receiver.  The benches clear.  As he's going off the field, Nyjer pulls a World Wrestling move, yelling at the Marlins fans....

Any amatuer psychologists out there? What's up with Nyjer?

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this kind of ongoing complete and total meltdown from a player. He’s obviously got a suspension coming from this, and still has the 7 game suspension for throwing a ball at a fan waiting on appeal. His hearing on that isn’t scheduled until September 7, but I would be somewhat surprised if they (either the team or the league) allow him to play in the Pirates series this weekend.

He really is just melting down. Probably after last season, when everyone loved him, he is not dealing well with this season’s failures. Without checking, his BA alone is about .100 below last year when he was on fire. This is the first time he has experienced any level of failure and he is not dealing well with it. With that said, I’m completely accepting the Milledge-Morgan trade as a success now that we have seen this side of him. I’d be embarrassed if he was a Pirate.

Pirates, Vikings, Hokies. I'm used to heartbreak. At least I have the Penguins....

To be fair to Nyjer

He had already been hit once. They supposedly threw at him for stealing 2nd and 3rd afterwards when the Nats were down 11, but it was the 4th inning. Volstad had already plunked two other guys as well.

by biggyv on Sep 1, 2010 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Oh bullshit

Morgan was absolutely right to do what he did in this game. I’ll set aside the previous stuff – sounds like he’s trying to get out his frustration with raw physical aggression, and probably crossed a line or three – but for them to throw at him twice in a game? Because he stole bases? Fuck that shit. Volstad got what he deserved.

Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing Sanchez take on Morgan when Morgan’s actually looking at him. I don’t really count blindsiding a guy as a manly move, but maybe that’s just me.

by JRoth95 on Sep 2, 2010 12:04 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Yeah I agree. As far as this game goes, they beaned two other players, then beaned Nyjer, then threw behind him. I think Volstad got what was coming.

The other crap he’s been up to speaks to his frustration probably with how poorly he is playing this year, and some of that stuff it bogus, but I can’t fault him for charging Volstad here.

Exactly

I won’t give Sanchez too much crap, because he’s protecting his guy, and Nyjer has to know the 1B is coming at him. But Volstad? He already hit him once, as well as two other guys.

I can understand it being uncouth to steal bases while ahead by 10 runs, but behind? Never heard of that being the least bit untoward.

by biggyv on Sep 2, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

If they don’t like Nyjer stealing bases, they should have stopped him.

by IAPiratesFan on Sep 2, 2010 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Stealing second and third down 11 runs is pretty stupid from a strategy standpoint, though the Nationals probably should have been more upset with him than the Marlins. The gain from stealing the base is pretty minimal and not nearly offset by the risk he’s taking.

and he’s lucky it happened to work out, but it’s not as though it’s particularly unsporting.

Agreed. There’s rarely an excuse to throw at a guy, and a couple SBs certainly isn’t one of them. Not that it makes causing a brawl the right option, but I can still understand why he might be upset by it.

WTF are you looking at?

You know what a batting helmet looks like, right? Has a brim sticking out front? A brim that, in this picture, is only just visible, because Nyjer is facing Volstad, the guy that he’s fighting? For comparison, note how Sanchez’ brim is sticking straight out in profile, because he’s facing Morgan as he runs at him full speed.

So yes, Sanchez didn’t literally jump him from behind. But Morgan is facing the guy he’s actually fighting, and Sanchez clocks him in the side of the head. Because his head wasn’t facing Sanchez.

Perhaps you think that the eyes are located in the shoulders? Because you’re certainly correct that Morgan’s shoulders were facing Sanchez. They certainly should have seen him coming. But the eyes located in the front of Nyjer’s face, not so much.

by JRoth95 on Sep 2, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, for Pete's sake.

Volstad was moving left to right across Nyjer’s field of vision as the two circled each other – meaning that he passed directly in front of the charging Sanchez. Which means, in turn, that if Nyjer was looking at Volstad, he got two great opportunities to see Sanchez running directly toward him (i.e when he was immediately to Volstad’s left/right). If Nyjer wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings (which is like rule #1 in a bar fight – keep your head on a swivel), then that’s his own damn fault.

by Vlad on Sep 3, 2010 3:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Just for reference:

Since the hat is, for you, the relevant factor, here’s a screencap with Nyjer’s hat pointed directly at Sanchez.

He then turned to look at Volstad instead of focusing on the guy charging him at a dead run, which proved to be a poor tactical decision. C’est la vie.

by Vlad on Sep 3, 2010 4:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's academic.

Actually the whole story with the Cardinals catcher is even funnier. Nyjer tried to run him over when there was no play at the plate, and in the process forgot to touch home. Pudge Rodriguez had to grab hold of him and turn him back towards the plate, but then Nyjer was called out for touching a runner ahead of him. Check out the video.

I don't know about that; there are some other canditates

In a playoff game with the Red Sox, Miguel Tejada ran into the Sox third baseman while rounding third and then stopped half way between third and home to argue that he had been interferred with. He was tagged out while making his argument and no interference was called. It appeared that he could have scored easily despite the contact if he had just continued home.

Nyjer had also run over the Marlins catcher (Baker) the night before…separating Baker’s shoulder and likely putting him out for the year…which was given as the reason he got drilled the first time last night. Stealing 2 bases down 11 runs is considered against the unwritten code of baseball…which garnered the pitch behind the back…and I’ve seen reports that he was also shouting at the Marlins fans after he scored the run after the SBs. In addition to the wrestling or hockey “heel” display after the fight.

Morgan had been called “unprofessional” by his own manager after he ran the Cardinals catcher over the weekend. On top of the throwing the ball in the stands and hitting the fan prior to that. Ryan Zimmerman wasn’t happy with him either over his actions of the last 8 days. But Zimmerman gave him the excuse “He’s still learning the game”.

When you have played professional baseball for 8 seasons (portions of 4 in the majors)…you are NOT “still learning the game”.

Nyjer may be trying to motivate his teammates…but he’s not playing hockey. And with his actions of the last 8 or 9 days, he’s very likely looking at spending a significant portion of September suspended. He’s already got 7 games for the ball throwing incident…which he has appealed (hearing is on Tuesday)…and probably looking at 5 games for this incident, which will not help his appeal. The Nats have 28 games left…and he’s going to miss close to half of them. On top of that, he’s been sitting the bench a fair amount the last few weeks. Nice way for the Nats to finish their season.

has gotten to be about 20 lbs. What an enormous waste pond to claim that a team that is getting beaten has to take it.

by ol Pete on Sep 3, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

I have never heard that when you are down eleven runs you have to stop trying to win the game. I don’t think there is such a rule. The only thing I can see is that if the other team had called off the dogs and started subbing players and were playing station to station baseball. But even in that case it was only the 6th inning and far too early to be throwing up the white flag.

by Slick1 on Sep 3, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

One correction...

the injured Marlins catcher was Hayes, not Baker.

by Thunder on Sep 2, 2010 8:15 AM EDT reply actions

That's too bad.

Hayes is a minor league lifer who probably won’t see the majors again after this year, and Baker’s a jerk who built his career on a syringe.

BTW...

while looking at Nyjer’s fielding numbers on fangraphs (UZR is right around 0)…I discovered something else…which is somewhat pertinent to Nyjer, since he played LF for the Pirates.

We’ve talked about the “no triples” defense the Pirates have used at home, and how it skewed Morgan’s numbers positively and made him look like the best thing since sliced bread on defense.

Jose Tabata has played over 500 innings in LF with the Pirates. Using that as a baseline (500 innings)…he leads ALL NL LF’s in UZR and UZR/150. He only trails Brett Gardner and Carl Crawford in the majors. Tabata is good defensively, but I doubt he’s THAT good.

Too small a sample size...

to draw conclusions either way. He definitely has the range and arm to be one of the better fielders. We’ll have to wait and see. That said, I haven’t liked what I have seen from him when he fills in CF. Could be just lack of reps but he doesn’t look as sure of himself. Either way, Tabata has way exceeded my expectations and his numbers have been almost identical to what they were in Indy. Pleasant surprise.

by maguro on Sep 2, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

It's possible.

I wouldn’t want to draw too many conclusions yet, but it’s certainly not implausible that a career-long CF playing LF might be a very good defensive LF.

Subjectively, though...

…he sure looks good out there, doesn’t he?

Just wish he got a chance to throw more often.

by Vlad on Sep 2, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Unrelated, but

UZR also says Neil Walker is the worst 2B in the National League (other than Aki), and the worst in the majors to go over 300 innings.

In both cases it’s probably too small a sample to say much about it.

by ElDuce on Sep 2, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Although Walker may not be doing spectacularly at 2B now...

There is considerable likelihood that he will improve, since he has only played the position for about 4 months.

by titanlord91 on Sep 2, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he will improve some...

but he just doesn’t seem to have the quickness needed for the position which is why is range is so limited. More than enough range for 3B but I just don’t seem him approaching average as of right now. I don’t know, maybe there is an offseason program that he can get on to improve his quickness. I’m hopeful but very skeptical. I absolutely love the bat at second base though.

by Slick1 on Sep 2, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nyjer was also great defensively in CF last year for the Nationals.

So, you can’t draw any conclusions from his LF UZR with the Bucs and his UZR this year with the Nats. It’s been pretty clear that he was not very good defensively in CF for much of this year, and his UZR reflected that.

Last year, he was great at the plate and in the field. This year he has not been good, either at the plate or in the field.

No, it's because I was diagnosed as bipolar, and know others who are,

and none of us are this violent or full of ourselves. Just because someone goes from happy to irate and crazy, doesn’t mean they’re bipolar. That’s an odd diagnosis to throw on someone in this case.

it's sad

I liked Nyjer as a fan. Nyjer is out of control and it seems like something has happened mentally. I doubt he is in the majors next year.

Yinzers uber alles

I don't have anything against Nyjer.

And I don’t take any special pleasure in seeing him get laid out. But it’s hard to see that he has any real grounds for complaint here. He went looking for a fight, and he found one.

Goes back a ways.....

Here’s one of Nyjer wanting to get into a fight, back in his minor league days…..after Ryan Doumit got hit no less…..perhaps an anger management class is in order???

Anger Management is bullshit.

There has been any long term studies showing any sort of real benefit in taking anger management classes.

Someone should just tell him to just relax and cool off a bit.

commentators said that Morgan was being "egged on" by some of the Norfolk players...

from what we know now, thats as dumb as anything Dibble has said this week… by the way, have fun sitting at home Dibble. once again, your mouth gets in the way of what little talent youve ever had.

once again, your mouth gets in the way of what little talent youve(sic) ever had.

Is that irony given that we’re also talking about Nyjer?

I got that, and thought it was funny...

even if nobody else deigned to comment on it.

I've never liked Nyj and was glad when the team sent him packing.

And I’m especially glad Tabata is our man in left. I hope he can stay healthy and focused for years to come.

On Tony Bruno's show the other night

He said Nyjer had overslud second and third on the steals in an attempt to injure the fielders there.
Tony Bruno obviously does not watch many Pirates games.

I get all my orthopedic advice from Dr. Rob Dibble

Suspensions

Nyjer Morgan: 8 games
Chris Volstad: 6 games
Alex Sanabia: 5 games
Gaby Sanchez: 3 games
Doug Slaten: 3 games

Nyjer’s other 7 gamer is still pending.

by ElDuce on Sep 3, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

Also some coaches:

Pat Listach: 3 games
Jim Riggleman: 2 games
Edwin Rodriguez: 1 game

So basically Morgan's season is practically over,

and he’ll probably be looking for a new home soon. Sucks to be him.
