Minor League Open Thread

With the Pirates off tonight, I figured I'd start a minor league thread for tonight's games.

The only true pitching prospect starting tonight is Jeff Locke for Altoona. He faces off against Bowie at 7:05 EST.

Dana Eveland takes the hill for an Indy team that is becoming less interesting to follow every day. The Indians play Louisville at 6:00.

Bradenton takes on Port St. Lucie at seven, with Brian Leach starting for the Marauders. Bradenton has a two-game second-half lead in the division with four games left.  Hopefully the Bucs' Class A+ club can make the playoffs for the second straight year.

West Virginia takes on Rome at 7:05 with Phillip Irwin taking the mound, and Tyler Waldron goes for State College against Auburn at 6:35.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the managing editor (Charlie) or SB Nation. FanPosts are written by Bucs Dugout readers.

Anyone

have any thoughts on the possibilty of Locke starting next year at AAA?

by C Shint on Sep 2, 2010 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

The Pirates were very slow to move Locke from Class A+ to AA, so I doubt they’ll be so aggressive with him to start the year.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Sep 2, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he'll have to earn it

He’s had a stellar year, but next year is a new year, and he’ll have to prove himself all over again. But, if he pitches well in ST, why not?

by Pensburgh Pirates on Sep 2, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

thats how i was thinking

he has been good at AA this year and if he comes to ST and looks as good as he has this year why not give him the opportunity at AAA

by C Shint on Sep 2, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you

i think Locke

is right on schedule to reach Pittsburgh in June 2012. Unless he just decimates AA and AAA, I don’t see much reason to push him up faster. There’s much to learn at both those levels, and spending a full year at each (or close to it) is probably good for him and others in the system.

I’d say Waldron and Irwin are prospects at this point, although they’re certainly not on Locke’s level.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Sep 2, 2010 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

Plus Irwin is just begging to be referred to exclusively as "Wild" Phil Irwin,

…which all fans of 80’s pro wrestling can hopefully appreciate and which therefore means he really ought to be considered a Certified Blue Chip Prospect, all else aside.

In all seriousness, he’s too old for basic A ball, but his 24% K rate vs. 4.7% BB rate while tending groundball suggest there might be something there. I couldn’t figure why he wasn’t moved up in July or early August. Now he doesn’t get his first taste of high A ball until he’s 24.

good advice

Any word on why Lincoln left the game after 37 pitches last night? Seems strange if he’s healthy.

I’m pretty sure I read he was on a 50 pitch limit. It was in the 9/1 prospect watch at piratesprospects.

Since I haven't been listening...

any reason Clement pulled tonight? Lifted in the top of the 5th for Mitch Jones. Clement would have led off the bottom of the 5th.

holy $#@!

eveland had 9 K’s in 4 innings…

by white angus on Sep 2, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, he also gave up nine baserunners in four innings (seven hits, two walks), and four runs, so color me unimpressed.

Indy wins 7-5, clinching a playoff berth.

Presley went 2-5 with with a double and a triple, and Worse than Mendoza went 2-3 with a double and two walks.

Maybe someone can explain to me...

how Indy is supposedly in the playoffs…unless the IL playoffs expanded to 8 teams and didn’t tell anyone. It’s Louisville that’s in the playoffs. MiLB.com screwed up. They take 3 division winners and a wild card. Scranton and Durham have clinched their divisions…Louisville and Columbus are in the playoffs…just a question of which wins the division and which wins the wild card.

by Thunder on Sep 2, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Shoot, you're right.

I was going by that thing on the MiLB front page.

yeah, Indy was eliminated a while ago. . .

like when Alvarez, Tabata and Walker got called up. Not to mention Pearce.

Phil Irwin was absolutely lights-out in WV.

7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K.

I think he’s a prospect, albeit a rather fringy one. More of one than somebody like Kyle McPherson, anyway.

there's some chance

that Irwin/McPherson might jump to AA… is McPherson in A+ (just promoted?)- thats what BBref says but I thought he was A.

Neither of them had the Rudy Owens season but there’s the chance they may just get a few games and if they can ramp it up, go to AA quickly…

by BurgherKing on Sep 2, 2010 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

McPherson's K numbers look really nice this year

gotta keep an eye on him next year; i think hes gonna be made available in the rule5 though

by white angus on Sep 3, 2010 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh.

I have a hard time seeing him being taken. It’s possible, I suppose, but I don’t know who’d want to use him at the major league level, seeing as he’s never pitched above A-ball.

You may be right...

There is not a ton of roster space for fringe prospects. Though I don’t think McPherson is interesing enough for a team to try and hide him in the bullpen all year. I don’t think he gets picked.

Where did Bradenton finish in the first half?

They were dominant early, but I guess they weren’t first half champs.

First half? Second, 4.5 games behind Charlotte

They won the FSL South last night against the same Charlotte Stone Crabs (TB Rays). First playoff for FSL South Championship is Tuesday in Bradenton.

by Bob Hahn on Sep 5, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

100

Somebody should note that Bradenton’s Quincy Latimore hit league-leading RBI # 100 Friday night. Tonight is his last chance to break the FSL record for single-season grand slams, with which he is tied.
