Over the next 5 years or so, do you think any top Pirates prospect who figures to be an important player in the resurrection of the franchise will make the team out of Spring training? Or because of our low payroll, will it always be necessary to keep the player in Indy until June to delay his arbitration clock?
There isn't a great example for a dominant prospect who clearly should make the team next year. (Although I think a case could be made to promote Rudy Owens, he isn't a slam dunk since he hasn't pitched at AAA.) A better example might be if hypothetically in 2012, Taillon absolutely dominates AA, gets promoted to AAA in late 2012 and crushes there. In April 2013, would the Pirates be forced to keep him in Indy for financial reasons, or would they bring him North to start the season?
