2011: Altoona and Indy

Longtime reader, infrequent poster (lost my old password/email)....

As I've patiently waited for success to come at the MLB level,  I've gained more and more interest in the minor league affiliates.  There's been lots of discussion on where players like Locke or Morris might start next year, so I thought it might be interesting to project Indy and Altoona's lineups for next year.     If there's a "/", I mean a platoon at a position.

Let me know what you all think....

Altoona 2011

1B Anderson/Fryer

2B Ford, Negrych/Harrison?

SS Holt, Picart

3B Farrell

OF Hernandez, Lambo, Marte, Latimore?     Grossman by July?

C Sanchez, Newton, Skelton?

SP  Locke, Morris, Adcock, Pribanic, Leach

RP Erickson, Krol, Cox, Colla, Boleska, Moreno, Aguero

Indy 2011

1B  Hague

2b Negrych/Friday/Harrison

SS Cicaro/Diaz/D'Arnaud
3B Mercer

OF Presley

C   Watts/Pit catcher #3

SP Owens, Wilson, Crotta

Swingman: Watson

RP  Moskos, Dubee, Hankins?, Hughes?, Molleken?

At some point, NH talked about Negrych and seemed to consider him an organizational player. He played quite well in a short stint at Indy this year. However, noting the logjam that may ensue, maybe he's stuck in Altoona again?

Lambo's done pretty decent at Altoona given his age, but with only a .700ish OPS since the trade, maybe leave him there for a bit.

The gaps on the Indy roster (OF and Pitching) I assume will be filled by marginal players who don't make the cut, and maybe players who are out of options but still stick (Morton, Clement, etc)...And Pearce may still get a 4th option as a result of his injuries.

This projection also assumes the departure of some minor league vets like H. Giminez or most current Indy /Altoona relievers over the age of 25.

Lambo

I think Lambo will start out at indy since this was already his second season at AA but other than that i think your right on

i think mercer needs told this offseason

To prepare to play ss at AAA he needs a look there first as it is where his bat would play best and his power profile

And I'd flop Gorky's and Chase.

I think Hernandez had a better overall year, and improved as it went along. Plus I dont think theres room in the outfield for him in Altoona. Chase and Holt would make a good DP combo, and I just dont think D’Arnaud’s looked very good in Altoona.

No way...

D’arnaud stays at Altoona.

Why Not?

I def dont see it as a sure thing that he’s headed to AAA. His average hasn’t broken .250 the whole year. Obviously hasn’t adjusted to the level. I could see him getting promoted, but I think theres some pretty good reasons he wont be.

Would screw up...

how they have been doing things. Besides, Mercer had a worse year last year and still was promoted. Add those two things to the fact that they are going to see the improvement as the year went on and the fact that he had an insanely low BABIP early in the year he will get moved up.

I'd make a few changes

Gorkys to AAA.
Ford released. Hasn’t done anything in years.
Sicaro might be the MLB SS if D’arnaud makes AAA.
Brett Lorin might be in AA
Ascanio/Hart/Veal are all AAA bound at the proper point on their timelines.

I would change some things...

Altoona
C- Tony Sanchez, Eric Fryer
1B- Calvin Anderson
2B- Negrych/Ford
SS- Brock Holt
3B- Farrel
OF- Marte, Grossman, Latimore
Rotation- Locke, Pribanic, Adcock, Baker, Lorin
Bullpen- no idea at this point. Only definite is Moreno

Indianapolis
C- Eric Kratz
1B- Matt Hague
2B- Josh Harrison
SS- Chase D’arnaud
3B- Jordy Mercer
OF- Alex Presley, Andrew Lambo, Gorkys Hernandez
Rotation- Wilson, Crotta, Morris, last two spots could be anyone
Bullpen- Moskos and who cares who else

AAA

but, I think Grossman repeats A+ so he can truly flourish, plus it helps the OF logjam. I think Latimore replaces Robbie in Altoona.

He already shows Latimore at Altoona, so someone else would have to replace Grossman.

And I expect Owens to be at AAA, I just wondered why joegonzo didn’t mention him.

by Wizard Imp on Sep 3, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Forgot to add him...

He will be in Triple A for sure.

Like Wizard Imp says...

I alrady have Latimore in AA. Grossman makes it because he has held his own in the second half. I think they move him to AA and keep him there two years if he struggles. I might have him stay two years anyway unless he tears the cover off the ball(it is unlikely).

I thought I should mention to not rule out Jarek Cunningham starting out at AA or at the very least spending significant time there. He has done really well since he has come off the injury.

The catcher/OF combo in Altoona should be fun with Sanchez/Grossman/Marte/Latimore. Looks like a good place for someone to breakout and really improve their stock.

I’d move up Hernandez (even though he hasn’t done much) to give all of these guys a shot at Double-A.

I agree on everything...

I would also expect Sanchez and Marte to be in Indianapolis pretty soon. They could have a really nice team at some point next year.

dont be surprised

if sanchez and marte stay in altoona the whole season. sanchez has the better chance at being in Indy, however. d’Arnaud will start the season in Altoona. owens and wilson will be in Indy, locke in altoona… Morris??? i have no idea.

by white angus on Sep 5, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

D'arnaud WON"T...

start the season in Altoona. He WON’T. I already stated the reason. There is like a 2% chance he doesn’t. I already gave the reasons above. Now that’s out of the way. I wouldn’t be suprised if they stay the whole year in Altoona, but if they hadn’t missed time due to injury this year, they probably would have been in Altoona already. I could easily see them starting out really well in Double A and being promoted quickly. Sanchez has no one in the way and Marte could push Presley into 4th outfielder duty.

Altoona outfield can be interesting

LF – Quincy Latimore; CF – Starling Marte; RF – Andrew Lambo

  • If all goes well, maybe Grossman can replace Lambo because they both get promoted.
