I disagree sir...
this could be EPIC!!! This may be the most entertaining game of the year if you like offense.
Nats fan here...
…true that. Especially since Marquis may be a better hitter this year than pitcher. Marquis has been better his last couple starts so we’ll see what happens.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Anyone watching the game?
It isn’t coming up yet on the MLB ticket. Has the start time been delayed?
Great day to be a Bucco
Nice job by the club in honoring Maz.
Too bad the yinzers had to boo and shout at Bob Nutting. This day isn’t about Nutting you a-holes, it’s about Maz. Save your editorial comments for the PG blog.
Greetings everyone
Looking forward to the match up. MLB ticket has come in for me.
I think a lot of players are an inch or so shorter than listed, especially the guys said to be 6'1 or less.
Of course this is usual for all men.
I’d say Nyj is a legit 5’10.
On the bright side
If Morton only gives up one run in the 2nd, his ERA will dip below 10!
And heeeeeereeeeees Charlie!
I have a sinking feeling:
Nats 8
Pirates 2
That was a fairly accurate feeling, there.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
8?
You’re taking the under today?
It’s going to be at least 12.
hey all
I think Charlie gonna surprise us and pitch well

I don't know how many ABs, games etc. would be helpful.
What I do know is that one day the team said he wasn’t ready in the field and at the plate and then he was up the next one.
He’s got a long ways to go to be a successful big leaguer, let alone an All-Star caliber guy.
I'm encouraged that he's actually improved alot in the field
but batting isn’t showing a fast adjustment, and the automatic out with 2 strikes is just unwatchable.
He's got a lot of adjustments to make at the plate.
And I still think he’s ticketed for 1B no later than the beginning of the ’12 campaign.
I left the room for a minute and heard my friend yell “He Nyjered it!” I knew exactly what happened.

Speaking of which
2 scoreless at State College last night, 1H 1K.
Okay, you're right.
I wouldn’t give up Morton, Park, Burres, Gallagher, or LaRoche. They’re untouchable.

Are you implying the Pirates don’t fire him only because he’s black? JR causes much more damage than Beasley, and they haven’t fired him either.
I would also include JR in the "worthless ass" coaches for when he was 3B coach.
Beasly is more a function of JR needing someone as bad or worse than himself around so he doesn’t stick out as horrible.
I think that MLB at the behest of its leader Bud Selig will go to great lengths to increase the % of American black coaches and players.
If a player or coach is deserving of his position based on demonstrated ability, he should have it.
But I think MLB has been pressuring teams for several years now to get the numbers up.
No, I can’t prove this, but it is my honest opinion.
It’s possible, but without any proof (or an overt “Rooney Rule” like in the NFL) I don’t believe it. Why do you think they need to apply pressure?
Well, in every facet of American life, every workplace, university, and every everything, there is the PC concept of racial diversification on all levels, including management, so baseball probably not immune.
Shayborg
I’ll answer you quickly and then stop because I know Charlie doesn’t like us to get into this stuff.
MLB has gone to great lengths in recent years to “correct” the dwindling black American participation in baseball-from youth baseball to the majors-as if there is something wrong with young black kids for a few decades now choosing basketball and football more often.
I don’t see the same concern for the dwindling number of white players in the NFL, for example, but of course that could only be due to a lack of talent in every case, and not racism.
And I don’t think Bud Selig and the boys want to have a “Rooney Rule” that is written down for all to see and follow. Hence, the “going overboard” with the Civil Rights games, the Negro League uniform days, the Jackie Robinson retired #42 “in perpituity” but then unretired one day a year for everyone to wear, the RBI program-which is essentially in place to get more black youth in urban areas to play the game-etc.
I'm there...
Starting to think we should ride out Walker’s hot streak in the 4 hole. Hell I wouldn’t even mind Doumit there for the time being.
Garrett Jones is killin' us in the middle of the order. But then again,
we have no one else for the time being.
He can't throw a strike without hitting the fat part of the zone and he's getting killed...
especially in counts where he “has” to throw strikes.
WhAT DO WE OWE HIM
Pay his contract. and if a failure = cut him and all like him
Pirate rule = must swing at first pitch
G Jones swings at first pith, grounds out , strand 2
And here's the formula...
put a couple guys on base and let the defense take over. Man they suck all over.
How about a statue of Beasly waiving in Milledge to symbolize the entire 18 years of losing?
Any other suggestions?
How about just a pic in the PG of Beasley waving good-bye at Pittsburgh airport after the season-
never to return?

or Littlefield on the phone making a trade?
or JR just sitting on the bench with a face full of tobacco?
I think you get a little abstract with it.
Make it a panorama, with Littlefield looking in the mirror as he puts mousse in his hair, with a vista or the decrepit, neglected Dominican academy in the background.
How about a statue of Tommy John
to represent all our number one draft picks
I think it may be a blessing
…that I’m stuck @ work today, and can’t watch this.

Special assist
To the Pirates defense…or lack thereof. Can’t even blame Doumit or Milledge this time.
I'm thinking more and more that Garrett Jones would be best suited to a utility man role for us from next year.
Now if we could just find some other capable players….
so much for my prediction
Went outside for five minutes a.d he implodes

Now, Charlie's bad.
We all know that. But man that kid has some terrible luck. He actually did a pretty good job on Desmond and Zimmerman there.
Morton was the marquis guy in the trade, but yes if the others come through great,
if not we can get back McLouth on waivers anyway to play center next to Brandon Moss a Indy…

Pedro
More and more looks like Pete Incaviglia 2.0 40 HR power with a chance to K 200 times a season.
Craig Hansen has been promoted to Altoona...
for those interested. I’m pulling for this guy. Hope he can make a career for himself.
Sorry to repeat from a few games ago if you already read this but
Bowker seems like a Brandon Moss clone to me. We might waste 6 months or a year of at bats on the guy just to find out his another 4A player just like Moss/Clements/LaRoche.
Any by the way, dude is not 6’2 as listed, maybe 5’11". Makes a big difference for someone advertising himself as a first baseman. But players only lie if they need to and I think this guy needs to.
Jones will end up with 25 HRs and 90 RBIs
not too bad even on a decent team. And scoops bad throws most of the time. Bowker could not hold Jones’ jock strap.
I’m sure he has very little to do with how his height is listed in the media guide. They do get measured when they take their physicAl.
Lighten up, dude.
:-)

he's having a better game than charlie morton
by karreemofwheat on Sep 5, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
No...
I was hoping for useful. I think Martinez can fill the swing man spot starter role that McCutchen currently occupies. I don’t know what to make of Bowker yet. Haven’t seen him play enough but his minor league numbers are intriguing.
Well, I've seen enough of Bowker - neexxxtt!
Let’s hope you are right about Martinez, I’m willing to watch.
you know time has proven me right about alot of stuff, so my rep should help you believe sooner than later…
Bowker’s career numbers don’t provide much hope. I think he has a very very small window to showcase himself.
I think the Pirates have played enough pattycake with 4 A players
trading for a failed prospect at age of 26/27 out of another organization – we’ve been there and done that, Bowker is just a repeat of failed strategy. I just don’t want to see these sucky guys try to hit for game after game.
(Jones was a free agent so not exact comparison)
I don't think he's going to get that kind of opportunity.
He’s out of options and there are a lot of roster decisions. His best bet is to make the team as a reserve and earn regular time in limited action.
We have too many of these guys, though. Andy, Moss, Clement, Bowker. Honestly, I would happy if one them turned out to be another GFJ, but they have all been complete stiffs so far.
Anyone who can throw 60'6"
might be more useful than our current roster of major league pitchers.
GREAT
Keep up the good work Charlie. JR loves seeing you get SPANKED every 5th day.
OK, I've seen enough of Pedro at third.
His problems are more than just related to range. He can’t handle the hot corner. I was hoping to see signs that he could improve to just a little below average but there really haven’t been any.
Dude, you can’t say stuff like this and expect us to take you seriously.
by karreemofwheat on Sep 5, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Unfortunately I was.
See my reply below. We need Alvarez to be a 5 WAR plus player and I don’t think he can improve enough defensively to get their without hitting like one of the best in the game.
I was a big critic at first of his footwork
but I’ve said he has improved quite a bit. Now if only his bat would come around!
Yes you have...
His play is more than just bad footwork though. And he has improved. I just don’t see him improving enough to be useful at third. He’s goint to have to hit like Pujols to become a 5 WAR player with this defense.
If Alvarez had spent the whole year at AAA it might have helped him in the long run
but Andy LaRoche was sucking so bad at the plate, Pirates pulled the trigger, maybe too early?
I don't think that would have helped his glove at.
I agree that if Laroche were playing better he may have been down longer but I don’t think he was rushed. I think the problem is that most scouts were correct about him in that he is just not a good defender at third. If you don’t have range you had better damn well make all of the plays you can get to and he just doesn’t. He plays D like he hits…streaky.
And I have to give you some credit...
I think that some of your “exagerrations” about Pedro’s D are a little closer to the mark than they appeared to be when you were first making them. Some, not all!!!
Thanks – bottom line is if he were smacking the ball in the middle of the line up, an RBI machine, we could be more forgiving. As of now he’s a weak link on offense and defense…
To the tune of "Old McDonald":
Charlie Morton’s lost his charm,
EIEIO
His ten-cent head don’t match his arm
EIEIO
With a run scored here, a run scored there, here a run, there a run, fastball’s 90 on the gun…
Charlie should be on the farm,
E-I-E-I-O!!!

Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
I've had about all I can stand of the Pittsburgh Pirates today.
We’ll work on those 53 wins next time out.
GD Andy LaRoche
I hate all the LaRoches. They are plague visited upon Pirate fans.
I kind of wish Adam LaRoche was still our first baseman. Jones had the LaRoche April in August, but never had the LaRoche July/August.
Jettisoning Adam LaRoche for nothing was a terrible mistake. He’s an above average hitter who’s great in the field. The Pirates got rid of him when he was in something like a 1-for-40 slump andh is value was at is lowest possible point. He’s a quality player, and yinzers didn’t like him because he looked too relaxed at the plate.
I know he was a free agent, but as I said, his value was low. He could have been re-signed, and the Pirates would be a better team.

True.
We’d also be without the incomparable Hunter Strickland, he of the 3 K/9 and 1 HR/9 before being injured in Class A.

I predicted Nats 8, Pirates 2 earlier, oh well...
The truth is I predict that score every game, and I’m always pretty close!
