Hah!

I knew we were going to be bad this year but if you would have told me we were shooting for #46 the day before Labor Day I would have thought you were crazy.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

This Marquis-Morton duel could be the crappiest pitching matchup of the year,

by maguro on Sep 5, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree sir...

this could be EPIC!!! This may be the most entertaining game of the year if you like offense.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Nats fan here...

…true that. Especially since Marquis may be a better hitter this year than pitcher. Marquis has been better his last couple starts so we’ll see what happens.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

Anyone watching the game?

It isn’t coming up yet on the MLB ticket. Has the start time been delayed?

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

They are just now doing ceremonial first pitch by Maz.

FSN just now going to break, game starts when they come back.

Thanks...

I’m guessing the broadcast is delayed a bit then. At least I hope. I would hate to miss this pitcher’s duel!

Great day to be a Bucco

Nice job by the club in honoring Maz.

Too bad the yinzers had to boo and shout at Bob Nutting. This day isn’t about Nutting you a-holes, it’s about Maz. Save your editorial comments for the PG blog.

On the bright side

If Morton only gives up one run in the 2nd, his ERA will dip below 10!

by wg1of5 on Sep 5, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve said this before and no one wants to hear it. He could use 30 AAA at bats, he needs to find a different 2 strike approach. This nearly automatic Whiff with two strikes is getting real old.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know how many ABs, games etc. would be helpful.

What I do know is that one day the team said he wasn’t ready in the field and at the plate and then he was up the next one.

He’s got a long ways to go to be a successful big leaguer, let alone an All-Star caliber guy.

by patthatt on Sep 5, 2010 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

I'm encouraged that he's actually improved alot in the field

but batting isn’t showing a fast adjustment, and the automatic out with 2 strikes is just unwatchable.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

He's got a lot of adjustments to make at the plate.

And I still think he’s ticketed for 1B no later than the beginning of the ’12 campaign.

Or could that be misconstrued?

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, you're right.

I wouldn’t give up Morton, Park, Burres, Gallagher, or LaRoche. They’re untouchable.

by Suffering Buc on Sep 5, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You forgot Steven Jackson and Justin Thomas. I think we still have both of them.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you implying the Pirates don’t fire him only because he’s black? JR causes much more damage than Beasley, and they haven’t fired him either.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I would also include JR in the "worthless ass" coaches for when he was 3B coach.

Beasly is more a function of JR needing someone as bad or worse than himself around so he doesn’t stick out as horrible.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

If that’s JR’s plan, it’s about as intelligent as his lineups. I was responding more to the “appease MLB” bit.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that MLB at the behest of its leader Bud Selig will go to great lengths to increase the % of American black coaches and players.

If a player or coach is deserving of his position based on demonstrated ability, he should have it.

But I think MLB has been pressuring teams for several years now to get the numbers up.

No, I can’t prove this, but it is my honest opinion.

by patthatt on Sep 5, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s possible, but without any proof (or an overt “Rooney Rule” like in the NFL) I don’t believe it. Why do you think they need to apply pressure?

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, in every facet of American life, every workplace, university, and every everything, there is the PC concept of racial diversification on all levels, including management, so baseball probably not immune.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Most coaches and managers in baseball tend to be ex-players, and a good percentage of ex-players are black, so I don’t know that the league needs to do anything more. You’d think you’d see more minority GMs if the league really cared that much.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Shayborg

I’ll answer you quickly and then stop because I know Charlie doesn’t like us to get into this stuff.

MLB has gone to great lengths in recent years to “correct” the dwindling black American participation in baseball-from youth baseball to the majors-as if there is something wrong with young black kids for a few decades now choosing basketball and football more often.

I don’t see the same concern for the dwindling number of white players in the NFL, for example, but of course that could only be due to a lack of talent in every case, and not racism.

And I don’t think Bud Selig and the boys want to have a “Rooney Rule” that is written down for all to see and follow. Hence, the “going overboard” with the Civil Rights games, the Negro League uniform days, the Jackie Robinson retired #42 “in perpituity” but then unretired one day a year for everyone to wear, the RBI program-which is essentially in place to get more black youth in urban areas to play the game-etc.

by patthatt on Sep 5, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally I really appreciate the Negro League memorials because most people don’t know much about them (myself included) and they are a huge part of the history of baseball.

But you’re right, a game thread isn’t the right forum. I’ll stop too.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry to repeat from a few games ago if you already read this but

Bowker seems like a Brandon Moss clone to me. We might waste 6 months or a year of at bats on the guy just to find out his another 4A player just like Moss/Clements/LaRoche.

Any by the way, dude is not 6’2 as listed, maybe 5’11". Makes a big difference for someone advertising himself as a first baseman. But players only lie if they need to and I think this guy needs to.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Well thank goodness we spent all of this year’s ABs at first base on a surefire star like Jones.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones will end up with 25 HRs and 90 RBIs

not too bad even on a decent team. And scoops bad throws most of the time. Bowker could not hold Jones’ jock strap.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

by Brakeman8 on Sep 5, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Martinez...

he’s the pitcher we got from SF. We got him and Bowker for Javier Lopez.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

I was hoping for useful. I think Martinez can fill the swing man spot starter role that McCutchen currently occupies. I don’t know what to make of Bowker yet. Haven’t seen him play enough but his minor league numbers are intriguing.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s hope you are right about Martinez, I’m willing to watch.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

As far as I can tell, you think everyone is terrible except for Jones. You’re right about everyone except for Jones, but that’s just because these are the Pirates.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Bowker’s career numbers don’t provide much hope. I think he has a very very small window to showcase himself.

by BarryJT on Sep 5, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a little hope for him because he’s been unstoppable in the minors the last two years.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Pirates have played enough pattycake with 4 A players

trading for a failed prospect at age of 26/27 out of another organization – we’ve been there and done that, Bowker is just a repeat of failed strategy. I just don’t want to see these sucky guys try to hit for game after game.

(Jones was a free agent so not exact comparison)

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he's going to get that kind of opportunity.

He’s out of options and there are a lot of roster decisions. His best bet is to make the team as a reserve and earn regular time in limited action.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

We have too many of these guys, though. Andy, Moss, Clement, Bowker. Honestly, I would happy if one them turned out to be another GFJ, but they have all been complete stiffs so far.

by BarryJT on Sep 5, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Bowker is likely to be a stiff too, but none of those other guys have dominated AAA the last two years the way Bowker has. Clement and Moss have been good there, but not nearly as good as Bowker.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

so why ruin a good thing?

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Keep up the good work Charlie. JR loves seeing you get SPANKED every 5th day.

by rah0785 on Sep 5, 2010 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

A very ugly error there.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

OK, I've seen enough of Pedro at third.

His problems are more than just related to range. He can’t handle the hot corner. I was hoping to see signs that he could improve to just a little below average but there really haven’t been any.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

1 start and 5 ABs is a much smaller sample than two full months of starting duty.

by shayborg on Sep 5, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately I was.

See my reply below. We need Alvarez to be a 5 WAR plus player and I don’t think he can improve enough defensively to get their without hitting like one of the best in the game.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I was a big critic at first of his footwork

but I’ve said he has improved quite a bit. Now if only his bat would come around!

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes you have...

His play is more than just bad footwork though. And he has improved. I just don’t see him improving enough to be useful at third. He’s goint to have to hit like Pujols to become a 5 WAR player with this defense.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

If Alvarez had spent the whole year at AAA it might have helped him in the long run

but Andy LaRoche was sucking so bad at the plate, Pirates pulled the trigger, maybe too early?

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that would have helped his glove at.

I agree that if Laroche were playing better he may have been down longer but I don’t think he was rushed. I think the problem is that most scouts were correct about him in that he is just not a good defender at third. If you don’t have range you had better damn well make all of the plays you can get to and he just doesn’t. He plays D like he hits…streaky.

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

And I have to give you some credit...

I think that some of your “exagerrations” about Pedro’s D are a little closer to the mark than they appeared to be when you were first making them. Some, not all!!!

by Slick1 on Sep 5, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks – bottom line is if he were smacking the ball in the middle of the line up, an RBI machine, we could be more forgiving. As of now he’s a weak link on offense and defense…

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

Only difference is I believe his offense will improve dramatically, the defense…not so much.

I wish Willie Stargell as stil our first baseman.

by BucsFaninCA on Sep 5, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Jettisoning Adam LaRoche for nothing was a terrible mistake. He’s an above average hitter who’s great in the field. The Pirates got rid of him when he was in something like a 1-for-40 slump andh is value was at is lowest possible point. He’s a quality player, and yinzers didn’t like him because he looked too relaxed at the plate.

I know he was a free agent, but as I said, his value was low. He could have been re-signed, and the Pirates would be a better team.
