Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

We're in good hands (kinda)...

According to a Post-Gazette article, it has quotes therefore it is an article, the Buccos should have two players finishing close to 4th in Rookie of the Year voting, Neil Walker and Jose Tabata.  That follows a year after having a player finish fourth, Andrew McCutcheon, and having a player finish 9th, Garrett Jones.  Notice that Pedro (Petey) Alvarez wasn't even mentioned, and I think we can all attest to his abilities.

While there is a dearth of highly ranked position players above any A level, we have five nice players that should be able to grow and improve (you can argue against Jones), to help us achieve the goal of a winning season and beyond.  The really good news is these are players that should be 1-5 type of hitters.  We're not talking about a guy that will struggle in the 7-8 spots, we're talking about legit hitters.

This is what a rebuild should look like from a position player stand point.  You must draft and develop, draft and develop, and then trade for missing pieces with a few of those drafted and developed players.

I am encouraged by Justin Wilson, Rudy Owens, Bryan Morris, Jeff Locke, Daniel Moskos (never thought I would say that I am glad to say it), Diego Moreno, Mike Crotta and Brad Lincoln.  However most of those guys are at least two years away and a lot can happen in 730 days, as we all know.

However, with Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, the Zacks, Cain, Pounders, etc. after the above mentioned guys the pitching looks good. We have some nice positional players following them, right in line with some of our A pitchers.

The cupboard is no longer bare, it is legit.

We're getting closer, we're doing it the right way as far as the players go.

Now, the manager on the other hand...

That's 4th at best... not a probably fourth

as Heyward, Posey, Garcia, and Sanchez all have better numbers or better recognition.

Funniest thing about that article is the one veteran scout, when asked of his pick for ROY, saying.. “Without looking at the numbers, I’d have to say Heyward.”

Really? Great, thanks for your insight.

Without looking at the numbers, I’d have to say the PIrates should win the division.

i thought it was amusing that...

Coghlin wins rookie of the year and cutch was 4th, yet BaseballAmerica gives the ROY to
Cutch…

By the numbers...

…Cutch was the runaway best choice last year.

I'm positive of one thing

Nutting and BFD will say something unbelievably stupid in the comments of this post.

Just Add Rendon..

And i think for the meantime with Jones, we should have 6 solid hitters in our lineup. Also, i would like to see either Bowker or Lambo in RF and that should be 7 solid hitters.

solid hitter?

Hope we can do better than Bowker. He’s 27 and has still yet to establish himself — a 282 OBP in more than 500 major league plate appearances. He could have a spurt of usefulness (like Garrett Jones) but a 29-to-117 BB/K ratio provides little hope he will transform into the consistent slugger good major league teams should have in a corner OF slot.

im not impressed with Bowker

He’s another Jeff Salazar. I really hope Neal acquires a decent power corner bat for next season.

Probably.

But all they gave up was Javier Lopez for him. What were you expecting? Pujols 2?

by IAPiratesFan on Sep 6, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah!!!

Otherwise he’s just “Bad Deal Salary Dumping” Neal. Bob Smizik said so….

But Huntington wasn’t finished unloading salary. He sent Lopez to San Francisco for pitcher Joe Martinez and outfielder John Bowker — both of whom are 27.

What sense does that make? The only way to explain trading an effective left-handed reliever for two non-prospects is money. Lopez is due arbitration next season. Based on the fact he has a 2.79 ERA and that left-handers are batting .204 against him, his less than $1 million salary would probably escalate to more than $2 million.

Looking forward to having five or more .800+ ops hitters!

C: Sanchez
1B: Alvarez
2B: Walker
3B: Rendon
SS: Cedeno
LF: Tabata
CF: McCutchen
RF: Lambo

Assuming the Pirates draft Rendon, and that these players remain injury free, avoid personal trouble and push hard towards their ceilings, the Pirates ought to have a rather formidable lineup in 2013. It would help greatly if Lambo and Sanchez become productive Major Leaguers.

The only reason i am a huge fan of Rendon

Is the stats he put up last year for Rice are just off the charts. He hit more home runs than the times he struck out (26 homers, 22 ks), had more than a .500 OBP which i believe at the collegiate level is outstanding, he almost hit .400, and he’s considered a plus defender.

He would have been a #1 lock if not for the injury (maybe more so than Harper? less than Strasburg obviously though).

by wickethewok on Sep 5, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he still is more of a lock than Harper was at this point...

I don’t think Harper completely solidified his place until his JUCO season. And what Rendon did last year as a sophomore was equally impressive, IMO, as what Harper did in JUCO as a 17 yr old. As with anything a lot can happen between now and the draft though. But I just don’t see how the ankle injury could threaten his career. I suppose it could sap some of his value if he loses some range at third but I have hard time believing it will affect the bat in the long run.
