Community Prospect #9

To my slight surprise, Luis Heredia only managed a measly 71% of the vote in the number eight poll (I had him pegged for 90%). Regardless, he is the clear winner, and it's time to move to the next poll. Here's your list to this point:

1.  Jameson Taillon

2.  Tony Sanchez

3.  Bryan Morris

4.  Rudy Owens

5.  Stetson Allie

6.  Starling Marte

7.  Jeff Locke

8.  Luis Heredia

Enjoy, and let me know if there's a 10-20 range guy you want added to the poll.

For me, it came down to Lambo vs. Wilson

I chose Lambo, but I know a lot of people are high on JWil

This was basically my thinking too.

However, I took Wilson.

This one was rough

Most of the other ones have been pretty easy for me, but I went back and forth between Limbo Lambo and Chase. I know Chase had a brutal start, but he’s rebounded nicely and I still think he can be a solid MLB player. That being said, I did go with Lambo

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.

Lambo

Has been batting .139 over his last 14 games. Anybody thinking he turned some magic corner when the trade was made needs to come back down to reality. He had one pretty good season (.807 OPS in A ball, 1.171 OPS in 36 AA ABs in 2008), but has been borderline garbage for a bat-first corner-OF since 2009 starter.

If you believe he still has some useful tools, then maybe he warrants a top-20 spot on this list, but if Lambo cracks the Pirates top-10, it’s a really negative sign for the farm system.

I don't get the hype...

for Lambo either. I think the pitchers (ZVR, Wilson, Cain) show a lot more potential than Mr. 4th/5th outfielder.

"borderline garbage"

He’s a 21-year-old holding his own in AA. Age-relative-to-level is your friend.

When Tabata put up a .774 OPS in AA last year, that didn’t make him a non-prospect, either.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

You have a point there with Tabata. Does Lambo have big power potential? I find it somewhat alarming that his HR’s have decreased quite sharply as he’s gone up levels. Could be due to his suspension, I suppose. That stuff doesn’t help. Also, are his lefty/righty splits always as bad as they are this year?

by NastyNate82 on Sep 7, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends what you mean by "big power", I guess.

He mostly gets written up as a gap hitter who should develop more power as he matures, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be a HR champ. Think Paul O’Neill or Rusty Greer offensively, maybe, if he maxes out?

Lambo’s splits, all levels, career:
vs. LHP: .318/.370/.513 (456 AB)
vs. RHP: .269/.335/.418 (981 AB)
That’s kind of weird for a LHB, isn’t it?

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Really bizarre splits...

Makes this year’s numbers look out of whack. And that is certainly plenty of power, if he maxes out, I’d say. How is he supposed to be defensively?

Not great with the glove, by rep.

LF or 1B. Good arm, though, which is part of the reason he’s in the outfield.

Haven’t seen him in person, so I can’t speak too authoritatively there.

Colton Cain

Even if the era and w-l doesn’t show he has pitched lights out for the past month.

definitely ZVR!

You read the reports out of state college and this guys has really figured things out. He’s pitched really well since the 1st couple of outings and pretty much dominated with an 89-90 mph fastball. When he begins to fill out and adds some velocity things could get interesting. He was the best of the over slot signings in the draft last year and nothing that happened this season has changed that.

by Slick1 on Sep 6, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Heh. I'm a bit surprised Lambo is winning by so much.

My impression of him is not really that of a future impact player, in contrast to guys like Wilson, ZVR, and d’Arnaud.

I’m not sure how Wilson and D’Arnaud could be impact players, either.

Anyone else agree

the list should run to about the 15th spot. i feel like a top 15 list would be the best

by C Shint on Sep 7, 2010 12:31 AM EDT reply actions
