Breakout Prospects
I know we had a post a couple days ago about potential bounce back prospects for next year, but what does everybody think of potential breakout prospects for 2011?
I don't quite know if we really had any big ones this year. Nate Baker's looked good, and Quincy Latimore is actually finishing pretty strong on the year (at home, and on the road), but I don't think either of those guys is really lights out. Locke and Morris might be, but they're more bounce back guys, since they were always well liked for their stuff. Jeremy Farrell was the closest, but then he went and got injured so he's lost some luster. Anyway, its always interesting to guess about who's going to have a monster year out of nowhere. My money's on Elevys Gonzalez. He's young, he hit another home run tonight, he's got great plate patience, and the guys at BUCSP consider him the best WV prospect (said Elevys's swing was similar to Chase Utely's). He had one rough month this year, but other than that his average has been pretty good, and it seems like his power's coming along a bit this year. With the crazy hitter's park at Bradenton, I'm going out on a limb and saying 15-20 HR (in a full year mind), .300 average, and a .385 OBP. Think his splits (especially pop) will favor home, but I think he'll be good on the road too. Other sleepers?

Have at it.

What reports?
I have heard nothing but negative things about Brito. Do you know of a favorable scouting report (or something)?
Eh.
The scouting reports are good, but there remains the fact that Brito is a 22-year-old batting consistently under the Mendoza line in A ball, which does not bode well at all for his future. Consider his monthly BA splits to date (AB totals added to show sample size):
April: .250, 64 ABs
May: .173, 81 ABs
June: .182, 77 ABs
July: .190, 84 ABs
August/September: .200, 60 ABs
He’s been consistently under .200 for nearly the entire season, barring April, in which he was merely mediocre. Throw in his 123 Ks in 366 ABs, and it doesn’t look good for him, regardless of how the scouts might rave about him.
Of course, we did get him for Brian Bixler, so we still unquestionably won that trade.

Wow, those are bad numbers.
I think I could manage to put up those kinds of numbers, and I’m more than double his age.

well for one.
Charlie was pretty impressed by him, he said the ball jumps off his bat. So, I figure he can’t continue to be this bad.
Oh OK, just curious if you had something recent.
IIRC Charlie so him play a while ago and he has been bad for most of his minor league career now. Plus he is supposedly lazy on defense.
just a shot in the dark really
I’m much more worried about income statements internal rate of return time value of money bond yield and other ACC/FIN stuff than sabermetrics. Sorry if I’m off base.
Tony Sanchez...
Whaaaat? He’s already the concensus #2 prospect in our organization, how can he be breakout?
I think he goes from respected, hyped Pittsburgh prospect to serious national recognition next season. I’ll say he dominates High A very quickly and hits AA in stride, possibly even forcing his way to AAA by the end of the season.
Sanchez will leap to Top 25 MLB Prospects next season.
Even if he becomes a Top 25 prospect, though...
…he still probably won’t be the #1 guy in our system.
That’s a pretty cool thought.

Colton Cain
Is my choice for him to breakout in 2011
WV Power’s rotation for next spring is gonna be sick.

I plan on spending a good amount of time and money down there

What's the rotation going to be?
There are like ten guys that could overflow it.
Taillon, Allie, Cain, ZVR, Fuesser, Dodson, Stevenson, Cumpton, Waldron, etc.
State College had a lot of pitchers this year who have nothing to gain by sitting in short season ball all year.

Any chance they try to bump Cumpton or Waldron straight to A+, sort of like what they did with Justin Wilson?
I don’t think Taillon or von Rosenberg will be in WV for long, either. In the meantime, though, I do like the idea of combining two guys to go a whole game (whatever that’s called); Allie might be a good choice for this.

Taillon may be there longer than you think
because we may be trying to stretch his arm out so he may be there for two or three months

Eh.
If that’s the case, maybe we can combine Taillon and Allie for games while Taillon is there. Sure would sell some tickets.

Allie
i am assuming will be at SC in 2011 to work on pitch control. I think Allie may be one step behind Taillon unless there is a setback or Allie blows by one level on the minors.
tim alderson
is my breakout choice… if bryan morris can come back from that awful 09, alderson can too…
Elevys hit another home run today...
Just saying. Out of nowhere.
