september callups update

in case anyone hasn't heard, below is a statement copied from MLBTradeRumors.

The Pirates will designate Akinori Iwamura and Erik Kratz for assignment tomorrow, the team announced this afternoon. In related moves, Pittsburgh will recall Pedro Ciriaco, Jason Jaramillo, Brad Lincoln and Justin Thomas and select the contracts of Alex Presley, Brandon Moss, Brian Bass and Steven Jackson.

How does everyone feel about these transactions and is anyone surprise that Aki's contract will be eaten.

Personally, I'm almost as surprised as Moss on getting the call back to the show.  Good luck to him.

Don't see how he can find any time unless Tabata and Cutch both start taking more time off.

What if?

Moss or Presley catch on fire in the last month? It’s unlikely, but would they have the inside track on the starting right field position next year?

by FusilliJerry88 on Sep 6, 2010 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

The problem is that neither will get enough playing time to catch fire. I think both are being rewarded for very good seasons, but where will the at-bats come from? I’d be tempted to have Tabata and McCutchen split time in center to get as many at-bats as possible for Bowker, Moss, Presley, and Milledge, at least when we’re not playing a team contending for the playoffs.

by TNbucs on Sep 6, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Anybody can catch fire.

John Wehner hit like .350 in his first month in the bigs.

But neither one should have the inside track on a starting job, because neither one is probably a starting-caliber ML player, regardless of what they do this month.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Aki's contract...

was for this year only. It was a dead issue as soon as they sent him down.

I guess that now we have 83 RF’s. We’ve still got no one to play 1B vs LHP…at least that can hit LHP. Bowker is worse vs LHP than Jones is. I guess the only time Milledge will play is vs LHP the rest of the season.

Russell doesn’t sit Jones…so just where are Bowker, Moss, Presley, Young, Milledge, etc. going to get enough playing time to even have a decent chance of success as a PH?

by Thunder on Sep 6, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Huntington said Bowker would spell Jones

at first, from what I gathered in PG’a Plus site. Evidently he has tired of watching GFJ flail at lefties, even though Russell hasn’t. Unfortunately, GFJ is now flailing at righties as well. He took some ugly swings today against Hanson.

by RichieHebner on Sep 7, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Bowker...

is 5-46 vs LHP in the majors…with a .231 OPS. He’s not the answer against lefties.

by Thunder on Sep 7, 2010 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont think they are tired of jones flailing against lefties

the team has the worst record in baseball. they might as well see what the other guys can do against MLB pitching. thats how i see it.

by white angus on Sep 7, 2010 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Presley can play CF.

That was his primary position in the minors. So maybe he’ll be Cutch’s caddy from here on out?

I’d be perfectly happy if Young didn’t play again all year.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course mutting is eating Aki's contract

No other team us dumb enough to pick him up, especially w/o performing a physical

Rye- bet you’d like to give him the cough test

thats total BS

ive had this discussing on many other sights. all MLB contracts are insured, and to be insured a player MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL. just because FC said they didnt doesnt mean they didnt. this is a fact that you cannot argue, so theres no real point in trying. INSURANCE COMPANIES WOULD NOT GUARANTEE A LEGAL CONTRACT FOR AN ATHLETE WITHOUT A PHYSICAL. Period, exclamation point, exclamuthafuggination point!!!

by white angus on Sep 7, 2010 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

A lot of teams...

…don’t insure contracts anymore. You have to pay like 40% of the total value of the deal to get coverage, so it’s hardly worth it.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m happy to see Moss get another shot. I’m also happy to see Presley try to make a case. Of course, what we need are more outfielders _

by ryebr3ad on Sep 6, 2010 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

We need

Pitching
Hitting
Defense
…besides that, this team is set.

by BFD1 on Sep 6, 2010 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

so

management is set now?
I’m glad to see you’ve changed your tune.

by BlindSquirrel on Sep 6, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The Presley story is nice, but I don’t see how he projects as more than a low-end starter in the Milledge/Moss mold (which doesn’t work IMO). Translated to the majors, we’re looking at maybe 8-10 home runs and a 5-7% walk rate. Plus, he’s already in his mid-20s. We’ll see, though.

by Adam Reynolds on Sep 6, 2010 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

He can play CF.

A guy who can play CF and put up a .700-ish OPS is a decent bench part. Particularly if he’s got options left.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

This time next year...

We’ll be wondering how we’re going to choose between Marte and Lambo as the starting right fielder in 2012, so I wouldn’t get too attached to Moss, Bowker, Presley or Clement.

by BarryJT on Sep 6, 2010 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

i believe

that we’ve seen the last of clement in a pirate uni.

by white angus on Sep 6, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Have to agree with that...

I think Laroche, DY and Clement are dead men walking.

by BarryJT on Sep 6, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

They should be dead men, but can Neal give up on a cherished project? Especially when they want another option for Steve Pearce, one of the best hitters on the team this year. I’m not a Pearce booster, but his performance this year and the lack of it from other players merits a bench spot for him.

LaRoche, in particular, has regressed sharply this season.

His OPS is down to .551, which is beyond pathetic and just plain sad.

Now Andy’s Pirates career consists of a .226 batting average and .637 OPS in 1030 PAs.

LaRoche shouldn’t be on the team next year, given the performance (same with Clement, D. Young, and Daniel McCutchen for starters). Young not a magical pinch hitter with .567 OPS this season. But what will NH do?

by Adam Reynolds on Sep 6, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO, Marte and Lambo are 2013 or late-2012 targets at best.

by Adam Reynolds on Sep 6, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Neil Walker..

Off-topic, but I’d just checked the rookie stats earlier today and I think most (Including myself) wrote Walker off as a ROY candidate too early.

He’s third in OPS among all rookies at .849 playing a traditonally “weak” position at 2B.

Posey, Heyward, and Garcia are all probably still in front of Walker, but his recent hot streak definitely vaults him into contention, particularly if this continues until the end of the season.

by jlk9697 on Sep 6, 2010 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

Indeed.

On the news earlier, Pompeani was pimping Walker as a ROY candidate. I laughed a little, looked at the stats to reassure myself, and then kinda stopped laughing.

Then I grinned again, because Walker has been downright excellent this year, and that’s awesome.

im amazed at walker

because hes not the player he was in the minors. for a guy who gave no indications of being anything more than a career minor leaguer, this season has been impressive.

by white angus on Sep 7, 2010 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

He showed signs of maturing into a nice player...

the second half of last season. Carrying it into this season was obviously evidence that last year’s success was probably more growth than luck. Anyway it is a pleasant surprise and kind of helps ease the pain from the colossal failures that are Laroche, Clement and Morton.

He doesn't have a prayer.

He’s well behind all three of those guys on merit, after you account for defense. Possibly also Castro, depending on exactly how bad you think Castro’s defense is (+/- and UZR disagree pretty widely on him).

I mean, look at Posey. Posey’s a better hitter AND a better defender at a tougher position, in basically identical playing time. Or Garcia: Fifth in the NL in ERA, only 0.10 back from the leader. Hell, he might get some Cy votes.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah its a phenomenal rookie class

any other similar years you guys can think of?

by BurgherKing on Sep 7, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

'86 was pretty good.

NL had Bonds, Barry Larkin, Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, John Kruk, and Todd Worrell. Three guys who belong in the Hall of Fame, plus a MVP and two more guys who made multiple All-Star teams.

And as an indication of how little the awards voting lines up with ultimate career value, the top two vote-getters that year were Worrell and Robby Thompson, with Charlie Kerfield fourth.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

'01 was good, too.

Albert Pujols, Adam Dunn, Roy Oswalt, Jimmy Rollins, and Ben Sheets in the NL. Ichiro, CC Sabathia, Alfonso Soriano, and Brian Roberts in the AL.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope, he doesn't...

How I’d vote
1. Garcia
2. Posey
3. Heyward
4. Walker
5. Castro
6. Sanchez
7. Stanton
8. Colvin

How I think it’ll go down.
1. Heyward
2. Garcia
3. Posey
4. Castro
5. Stanton
6. Walker
7. Sanchez
8. Colvin

Not that the breakdown of it means anything, but Ja-Hey kid has had it wrapped up in voters minds for months. Maybe Sanchez/Stanton and Colvin/Castro cannibalize votes from eachother from some of the bias writers, but then Tabata may steal some Walker votes…

Kratz

I’m glad Kratz got his ticket to the show. I have a lot of respect for minor leaguers who pay their dues. Too bad he’s not quite a major leaguer. Live long and prosper Eric the Viking!

At least he got his shot briefly. Too bad he didn’t quite last long enough to earn a major league pension. Maybe he’ll make another brief cameo next year.

In other minor league lifer news, the Dodgers called up John Lindsey after 16 minor league seasons.

I do not think calling up Bass or JJ is in our best interest. I think neither has a real future with us. I love the calling up of Presley and Moss as well as Ciriaco. Hopefully we will see lineups like this
1 Ciriaco 2B
2 Presley LF
3 Walker 2B
4 Alvarez 3B
5 Tabata CF
6 Bowker 1B
7 Diaz SS
8 Moss/Milledge RF

dont agree with the lineup

but yeah, Bass/JJ should not be up… duh, NH!

by BurgherKing on Sep 7, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really sure...

…why you’d have the second-worst hitter in the lineup leading off, either.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Or, for that matter...

…have anybody (and particularly an established non-crappy player like Milledge) behind Diaz. Diaz couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Move Ciriaco to SS, take out Diaz in favor of a catcher, and move Tabata to leadoff, and you’ve got yourself a deal.

SS postion

Does anyone other than me think that Cedeno has been improving at the plate now as well as his excellent defense. Or would we rather give Ciriaco a shot at playing SS right now. I mean Cedeno has a .814 or something OPS so far this September. Also, other than a poor April and June, all the other months he has a .300 AVG or higher.

by Pmadude on Sep 7, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

I'm OK with auditioning Ciriaco...

…to see whether he’s worth keeping on the 40-man this offseason. I don’t think he’s actually a better option than Cedeno right now, though.

And Diaz is awful. Just awful.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaz was touted as a slick fielder, and was very bad from what I was able to see. Hopefully they’re not pulling the same deal with Ciriaco.

Friday, IMHO, would make more sense as a utility than either. They must really hate Friday’s defense, whereas my impression was he wasn’t exactly Pedro/Delwyn in this area.

by Adam Reynolds on Sep 7, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The rep on Diaz...

…was that he had plus defensive tools. A lot of people (here and on other sites) misinterpreted that as him being a plus defender.

Friday’s a 2B who’s a bit stretched at short. Which is OK for your UT IF, if he hits enough. Ciriaco is a very good defensive SS, but has a questionable bat. Kind of depends what you’re looking for, I guess.

I’d take either one over Diaz, who at this point does pretty much nothing well.

by Vlad on Sep 7, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

ciriaco's defensive skills AND speed..

make him a potential utility/specialist for 2011. he may not be a good hitter, but he still may be a valuable keeper
