Community Prospect #11

As of the writing of this post, Zach von Rosenberg leads Chase d'Arnaud and Justin Wilson by over 60 votes each for the top spot in the tenth poll.  In light of this, as well as my incredibly busy day tomorrow, I figured I'd throw this poll up right now and let you folks have at it.  The list to date:

1.  Jameson Taillon

2.  Tony Sanchez

3.  Bryan Morris

4.  Rudy Owens

5.  Stetson Allie

6.  Starling Marte

7.  Jeff Locke

8.  Luis Heredia

9.  Andrew Lambo

10.  Zach von Rosenberg

Enjoy!

Moskos

Should he be in the poll?

by pittpanther on Sep 8, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

holy $#@!

i completely forgot about Moskos

by white angus on Sep 8, 2010 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so. You can put him in the poll but I don’t think he’s a prospect after his AAA stint and I don’t think he’ll be protected on the 40-man.

really?

a lefty with regained power on his fastball wont be protected? i think i would disagree on this one.

by white angus on Sep 8, 2010 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

He did occur to me.

I couldn’t rationalize taking off any of the other options to put Moskos in, though.

Nick Kingham should at least be in the poll although it’s probly too early to vote for him.

Matt Curry

Any thoughts on his status as a prospect. I didn’t pay attention to how he finished up the season for State College, but I seem to remember that he had a pretty good start.

by curvefan on Sep 8, 2010 5:08 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

well

Curry was a beast at SC this year. he slowed towards the end but still had a good line. I would think playing two years at college and one at short season they will skip him up to Bradenton next year with a shot at AA by seasons end.

D'Arnaud?

Over Rojas, Wilson, and Cain? Really?

by H2O on Sep 8, 2010 7:49 AM EDT reply actions

He's better than some people think.

I like how he refused to use illness as an excuse this year, too.

by Vlad on Sep 8, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

i m wondering what we should read into the AA lineups

D’Arnaud seems to have lost starting SS to Jordy Mercer. Just rotating? Doesn’t seem likely given D’Arnaud was almost exclusively the SS through the year!

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

May be evaluating...

…Mercer as a possible UT IF.

by Vlad on Sep 8, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

huntington had announced

that d"Arnaud would be splitting time at both middle infield positions to not only free up space for other players, but to simply get playing time at another position. he said that d’Arnaud was still a shortstop… a shortstop who can also play second.

by white angus on Sep 8, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven't looked at his game logs

but he’s had about 50 ABs as 2B and 450 ABs as SS. I haven’t looked at the splits but given that he’s started 5-10 games in September, I am not buying that explanation. It’s likely they have doubts (which is entirely understandable) and want to give some other guys looks.

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

not that I think

Mercer is a better candidate. His numbers are bad- with higher BABIPs throughout.

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm very high on Chase

He may not be willing to use the illness as an excuse, but if its legit, it explains his struggles completely. His second half has been much more what we expected from him as well

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.

by glass0941 on Sep 8, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

you're joking right?

.619 OPS in July and .720 in August. His .890 OPS June was his one hot month. Over the 3 months, he ends up somewhere around an OPS of .750 I guess. That might meet expectations as a SS, but certainly doesn’t exceed anything.

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Variance happens.

Doesn’t really mean anything.

The monthly splits.

by Vlad on Sep 8, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

just to be clear

I think Charlie’s mentioned this before and I agree at this point that D’Arnaud has a broad base of skills that will help him reach the majors and perform acceptably for a little bit at least. His current season hasn’t helped him much, though, and his 2011 will be critical

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

not every player will have a +800 OPS...

this aint beer league softball. or the yankees.

by white angus on Sep 8, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

not sure what the point here is

all I was saying above is that while D’Arnaud has been OK, he hasn’t done anything special at all, wrt glass’ comment about his second half being better than what we expected. And unless you expected a .650 OPS, most people would agree he’s just about holding his prospect status without any big steps forward.

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Voted Cain

but thought of voting Wilson. Think they are the best 2 for this slot.

by BostonBuc on Sep 8, 2010 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

i broke the tie!

just pushed cain over wilson, 30-29 at the moment. after those two i think it’ll get really fuzzy. exicardo cayonez?

by nickp593 on Sep 8, 2010 8:49 AM EDT reply actions

Cain over Wilson

Up until now, I’ve been pushing for the AA guys over the shiny new draftees. And I like Wilson, but to me control problems are a red flag, and probably track him towards the bullpen. Not that going to the bullpen would be all that bad for the Pirates, as the movement on his pitches could be really, really effective in short stints. So basically, I see Wilson as our LOOGY down the road. That isn’t to say we couldn’t have another lefty, like Veal or Moskos, but I think they could be more power late inning guys, if they make it.

by pittiful89 on Sep 8, 2010 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

I picked Cain too

although in fairness, I already did this in the last thread which ZVR won. I think Wilson can be more than a LOOGY, but the doubts are legitimate.

by BurgherKing on Sep 8, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

brock holt

I wonder where he would have ended up had he not been hurt. If his season would have continued the way it was going he would easily be in the top ten..

by SHOOTFOR2010 on Sep 8, 2010 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

If the pirates used this as marketing.........

All the @#$hats in the media might not be as negative on this team. Wilson as #11 prospect shows how far this system has come.

by jls83 on Sep 8, 2010 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

Most of the critics wouldn’t know Justin Wilson from Carnie Wilson.

by Vlad on Sep 8, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

but they sure as hell know...

whom JACK wilson is… you remember, the perfect shortstop with the un-verified golden glove for which we should build our franshise around… if he could only have that second 200hit season… sighhhhhhh

by white angus on Sep 8, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

We may need a run-off tomorrow.

Aaron Pribanic

… Not saying he is top 15 or 20 yet, but i think he deserves to be on this list of canidates.

by BuccoBrigade on Sep 8, 2010 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

Eh.

Pribanic’s one of my personal favorites, but I couldn’t find a way to squeeze him onto the list (the poll options are maxed out already). As we move into later polls, he’ll probably show up.

how long we goin with this anyway?

its gettin tough for me to distinguish between 11 and 12 or 9 and 10.

by theatrain on Sep 8, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought

15 would be a reasonable number. its still fun to rank the guys regardless of the difference between 12 and 17?

by C Shint on Sep 8, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I’d put Pribanic on the list over Maggi. That might just be me though.
