Picking A Dozen Top Bullpen Prospects

Now Diego Moreno got exactly 0 votes in wg1of5's Community Prospect #11. And while white angus was upset about forgetting about Danny Moskos, it didn't seem bother too many of the rest of us. It's sort of interesting, therefore, to see Ben Badler's take on top bullpen prospects. He has Diego Moreno at #1, noting that "Moreno's fastball has earned 80 grades on the 20-80 scale from multiple scouts" and "Moreno has a solid idea of how to locate his stuff." Badler has Moskos at #7, noting that

Moskos still has a big league future. Moved to the bullpen full time, Moskos has shown a 92-95 mph fastball and flashed an average slider for Triple-A Indianapolis, though he still needs throw more strikes before he's ready for a major league role.

My suspicion is that it will be easier for Moreno to get his head straight than it will for Moskos to have enough command to thrive in the majors. But what do I know.

Moreno has ML-caliber stuff.

But he’s going to be hard-pressed to get many votes in the prospect ranking for a while, anyway, because relievers are just significantly less valuable than starters (or starting position players). As such, his ceiling is effectively lower, even if he becomes a very, very good RP.

moreno has an 80 arm

but like Vlad said, significantly less valuable than a starter. how many yinzers cried when Uviedo was sent packing for a starting pitcher? how many of them shut up when Uviedo failed miserably as a starter and was DFAed?

Good Answer

Still, if you are trying to field a low-cost team, it doesn’t hurt if bullpen pitchers 4-6 cost $1.2 million rather than $6 million.

Viva Clemente!

Sorry about the R

Damn enter button! I have a hard time ranking RP’s in the top 15. Don’t get me wrong, they have value I just can’t bring myself to ranking them as top prospects. Then again during the DL years one basically had to cause that’s really all we had.

really good RPs

can get you 1.5-2 WAR in a good season (I admit those good seasons are as volatile as any…)
