60 day DL and Donald Veal
I might be wrong, but IIRC players on the 60 day DL have to be placed on the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft.
i get you point
but who would you replace them with? i can only see replacing burres with Dubee or Crotta, but Burres a bad warm body to have around for an emergency start.
Burres "isn't" a bad warm body
and as gonfalon just pointed out, Moskos for Burres would be ok with me. as would Ledezma. I was just looking at the starters
I forgot about Moskos when compiling my 40 man roster list
Moskos should be in instead of Burres

I was very tempted to put Jared Hughes in

Way too early
You have to assume that people are going to be brought in from outside of the organization. At least one starter, several relievers, and a 1B/RF type, to begin with. I don’t expect to see Clement, Moss, Young, Burres to be on the roster. Pearce, Morton, and Martinez are all iffy as well.
I would love to see Pearce, Clement and Morton on the 40 man

Burres is gone for sure
He can easily be brought back on a nimor league deal as a NRI. In addition to the guys you mention as iffy, D. McCutchen and Diaz seem unlikely to be kept on the roster and Jaramillo, Karstens, Ascanio, Veal, Ciriaco and LaRoche are not sure things either. I’d cut ties with Moss, Young, McCutchen and Diaz for sure. Probably Clement too. Martinez needs to show something the last couple weeks. Veal and Ascanio depends on their health. Adcock being added is not a guarantee either though I would roster him. I think Ledezma probably stays and a couple of the young pitchers among Crotta, Dubee, Hughes, Watson and McPherson (who wasn’t mentioned) get kept instead of a few names mentioned (I’d probably put Watson at the top of that list but they all are borderline). Brian Friday is a toss up – more worthy than Diaz for sure. And I wouldn’t totally count out Gallagher, Thomas or Hart either, though I’d let the first 2 go – with Hart a possibly tough decision depending on his health.
A couple other guys not mentioned on the original list in addition to Kyle McPherson who may deserve consideration: Jean Machi and Eric Fryer
No
Diaz is far more worthy than Friday. Friday is Bixler all over again, Diaz is an absolute beast on defense.

Have you actually seen Diaz play defense?
As others have said here, he is said to have good defensive “tools” but his actual play shows no evidence of him being even an average defender. More “beastly” than a beast. You think Friday is Bixler all over again? Diaz has already shown himself to be worse than Bixler. Plus he’s out of options meaning he must be carried on the 25-man roster all season so if that is not going to happen (and I sure hope it doesn’t), better to use the spot on someone who can actually help the team win at some point.
i agree about diaz
hes average. ciriaco is probably better, with speed to boot. maybe boot is a bad word, eh?
Diaz is a poor man's Bixler.
Bixler if he got the bat knocked out of his hands in AAA, rather than the bigs.
And no, I’m not impressed by his defense. Good tools, marginal execution.
Morton
I think he’s the only one I’d disagree with.
I think he’ll get another chance.
I’d try to get Moss to come to camp as a nonroster guy.
But the rest can go.
moss will go to the highest bidder
he will be dropped from the 40 man and will become a free agent after clearing waivers
They are not yet eligible to be chosen in the Rule 5 draft so no need to put them on the 40-man roster yet. I think they will have to be added after next season.
Doubtful
But if it got to the point where the Pirates wanted to call them up next year, then they would add them to the 40-man at that point. No reason to add them any earlier than you have to.
Amazing ...
how many truly terrible players we can name.
its not as bad
as it was 2007 and prior though… those were some AWFUL 40 man rosters…
Why does everyone hate Clement?
In limited time, he’s been one of our best power hitters

I think Clement still has a shot at being a solid major league player (though it is more and more unlikely). But like about 20 other guys on this list, he is out of options. There is no way they can keep all those guys on the roster next year. Since Clement has been given more chances to show what he can do than many of the others (and failed), it seems to make sense to cut ties with him sooner than later, and as with Diaz above, use the roster spot on someone with a chance to help the team down the road.
agreed
i like clements power, but he no hit da curveball, maaaaan… however, if he were still a catcher, i would hold on to him for a while
He can't hit breaking balls.
And until he does, he’ll never be able to hit in the majors.
That, and we have several better options at first base: Pearce, Bowker, etc.
I don't hate him, but ...
he’s a bench player. He can only play 1b. He struggles to stay healthy. His MLB numbers are bad.
He really hasn’t demonstrated that he can hit an MLB breaking ball.
He looks like a non-roster guy to me. He also looks more like an AL player to me.
Does anyone have a complete list of players who need to be added to the 40 man roster or be exposed to Rule 5 draft?
Posted this a few times before, in other threads
But one more won’t hurt, I guess:
Must protect, at all costs:
Starling Marte
Jeff Locke
Rudy Owens:
Probably ought to protect:
Diego Moreno
Alex Presley (just rostered)
Danny Moskos
Might get taken if we don’t protect:
Nate Adcock
Kyle McPherson
Tony Watson
Brian Friday
Jared Hughes
Michael Dubee
Eligible, but unlikely to be chosen:
Eric Fryer
Mike Crotta
Jim Negrych
Tom Boleska
May or may not be eligible:
Eliecer Navarro (depends what day he signed)
I made that, so caveat emptor in case I forgot anybody.
