propaganda machine at work - "promising future"
Nutting & Regime basically work on the (roughly) four year cycle system.
That is ....Every four to five years they come up with a list of prospects (in most cases Problem Prospects).
They begin their little propaganda game by anointing these players as the "new future" of the Pittsburgh Pirates....or (as most recently heard) The New Dynasty.
Within two years (as the salaries creep up so slightly) they begin dismantling the core. They poke holes in the skills of certain players, quietly label them trouble makers, or whatever else they can dream up to justify the giveaway.
Within the four to five year period....Poof!....They're gone!!
Let's take a brief look at some examples:
'97...Jose Guillen, Freddy Garcia, Ron Wright, Tony Womack, Rich Loiselle, Midre Cummings
'00...Brian Giles, Kevin Young, Warren Morris, Aramis Ramirez, Chad Hermanson, Kris Benson, Jose Silva
'04...Jack Wilson, JJ Davis, Jose Bautista, Oliver Perez, Kip Wells, John Van Benshcoten, Tike Redman
'08...Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Freddie Sanchez, Nate McLouth, Matt Capps, Zach Duke, Paul Maholm
Pro Nutters - Before you try to tell me these players had no potential, were never any good, etc....Don't bother.
I have followed the Pirates diligently, and I've been fed the potential of all of these players by the Nutting Regime.
And ....20/20 is hindsight.
All of these players were projected no differently than McCutchen, Tabata, Walker, etc.
Anyone that says differently was not aware of the situation at the time....Or they are stretching the truth.
I will say that many of them (early in their career) were on teams that finished with a better record than this present team.
It's now a new round of this little game....And be prepared to see it torn apart sooner than you expect.
Welcome to the latest cycle!

So because some prospects don’t work out, all of them don’t work out?
I’m also wondering — who currently in our top ten is considered a ‘problem prospect’
I’m curious.

Naw,
Flo and Eddie wanted to go sing with Zappa.

"Illegal, Immoral and Fattening"
I used to play that on the college radio station.
And read “Flo and Eddie’s Blind Date.”
So basically, Tike Redman = Andrew McCutchen?
My whole perception of the whole just changed.

I have a question
if Iwamura came to Pittsburgh and performed at exactly his average performance over the last 3 years for the first 3 months of the season, what do you think we could have flipped him for?
Cool question.
To Ned Colletti: Dee Gordon and Jerry Sands
To anyone else: one B prospect and filler, or something like that.

A Whopper with the works.
lol
but I was actually serious there. It was one of my bigger disappointments, because I thought Aki was a near-lock to have some value at the trade deadline, and that we’d get back at least a young reliever for him. Pity!
every baseball expert
called the Aki signing one of the best pickups in the spring, saying that he could easily fill the shoes of Freddie.
The wave looks more promising this time…
McCutchen, Walker, Alvarez, Tabata, T.Sanchez, McDonald, Morris, Owens, Locke, Hanrahan, Meek.
As always, it remains to be seen. Probably will need to trade for an ace to make it work.
Aaaaaand…on the route to 100 losses comments again!
At least we’re mostly not responding to the OP.

BFD1 has a valid point
Pirate ownership continues a similar pattern just as the results of the team do too. One other thing, the current owners harps about accountability but his actions speak louder than his words. What a shame and a disgrace the Pirates are.
Who are the pirates?
What is this thread about again?
you've missed the point completely
The point is that turtles are cool.

They're amphibians...
…so they’re cold-blooded by nature, if I remember my elementary school science correctly.
Therefore, by definition, they are cool.
Got it!
Looks like my ten year High School reunion.

Aren't they reptiles?
Still cold-blooded, though, and still cool.

Maybe...
…he should have gone with “Juan Bizarro” and started writing like the Superman villain talks, where everything is opposite from the way things are on Earth.
Actually, if he did that, his posts would make a whole lot more sense.
I’m a geek, and unapologetically so.

this is
possibly the least intelligent post by this guy. don’t EVER try to convince a pirates fan that midre cummings, freddie garcia and ron wright were good and talented.
what’s next, pirates blew it when they dumped scott bullet?
Ron Wright was good, and talented.
And then he got one of the main nerves in his leg accidentally severed during back surgery.
Oops.
Okay, I was reading this thread on my work PC with customers pretty close by
and I actually had to close my thread at this point to keep from cracking up uncontrollably.

OK, just one thing, and then I'll stop
I’ve grouped all these guys and gotten their career WAR (from Fangraphs).
Group 1: 10.7 (That’s w/ one less player than the rest, but wow!)
Group 2: 121.3 (Buoyed obviously by Giles and Ramirez)
Group 3: 39.6 (Jack Wilson and Kip Wells lead!)
Group 4: 78.2 (Not bad, considering)
Group 5: 25.1 (OP had Cutch, Tabata, Walker. I added Hanny, Maholm, McDonald, and Pedro)
A couple things here. The Pirates have had a lot of bad players…but most of these are not on Nutting/NH anyway, whatever, doesn’t matter.
The main point is this: Going on career WAR, this crop looks very promising. When you consider that these guys have about 12 years of Major League experience between them.

HI-OOOHHHH!!

No actually that was juvenile and unfunny. my B!
I was concerned when I saw the original post
Thankfully, the level of insightful baseball commentary in the thread rapidly increased from the OP.
Speaking of turtles,
I emceed the Turtle Races for 10 years at this bar in Marina Del Rey.
Yes, turtle races.
Free your ass and your mind will follow.
Which reminds me
I ought to get back to the turtle racing bar down the street from me. It’s been too long.
You're in Ravenswood?
I’m in Rogers Park.
And I didn’t know they still did those races at Big Joe’s. How are they structured?
It’s funny – when I was getting ready to move to CHI from LA, people told me I should go get a job emceeing there.

Andersonville
But within walking distance (and much closer to Hopleaf, which lacks turtle races but is awesome). Up until last fall, I was just off the Morse Red Line, actually.
It’s been a while since I’ve actually made it to Big Joe’s on a Friday, but they still advertise the turtle races, and they run probably six or so evenly spaced out from 10 until just before close, which is nice as it allows pretty much anyone who wants to to get a number and participate. Can get a little packed, but the racing is a little removed from the main section of the bar (in that it’s up on a little landing), so that splits the crowd up pretty well.
Hell, Andersonville
is right next door.
We’ll have to get together for a drink sometime.

Nothing says the "new future" or "no [different] than McCutchen, Tabata, Walker, etc" like a 31-year-old Kevin Young or a 29-year-old Xavier Nady.

except that Young and Nady run like them?
