The right comparison is to look at the players taken right after Littlefield picked in 2003. I suppose one could make the case that the Pirates should have taken Aaron Hill or Ian Stewart, but none of the other general managers looks like a genius.

In 2004 there's a bit more happening. Jered Weaver and Stephen Drew were both college juniors and commanded much higher bonuses than the high schoolers in the neighborhood. But hey, we've got Josh Fields now.

In 2005 it's really hard to fault the player taken, even if you're not an avid fan of McClutch. You might prefer to have Jay Bruce, but it's not an easy call. Plus the Bucs have Jeff Clement (taken 3rd), Aaron Thompson (22nd), and Craig Hansen (26th). Of course Littlefield missed the chance to take Nolan Reimold and Chase Headley in the second round, but lots of GMs missed that opportunity. And C.J. Henry was sort of a disappointment on the Kansas basketball team last year, though his brother was really good (until the tournament).

My take is that the Pirates personnel shortcomings don't stem from what happened in round 1. After round 1 are we talking judgement, scouting, or luck?
