From an undisclosed source near Joe's family, I have been informed that the Pirates have agreed in terms to a deal with Beimel on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. I thought I'd let yinz know. Still waiting for mlbtr to confirm the move. The link is to his stats. UPDATE by Charlie: It sounds like this is confirmed. This is a nice signing for PR reasons (the Bucs sign a Pittsburgh guy right before PirateFest), but it also makes sense for baseball reasons, in that Beimel is a better lefty relief option than any the Pirates already had. This isn't to say he's great - he's posted good ERAs for the last several years, but his peripherals say he hasn't deserved them. But it's nice to have any functional lefty, since Scott Olsen and Tony Watson were the closest to functional the Pirates had before. I'd give Beimel a very good chance of making the team.
